My DAs have Ravenwing Pathfinders, effectively veteran scouts. They exist for various reasons:
1) merging the Ravenwing and the Firewing after the heresy, it's an evolution of that
2) Hunting the fallen isn't always about brute force, a dagger can end wars
3) Some recon work can be required which cannot be entrusted to the scout company, because it's linked to the secret hunt for the fallen, therefore veteran scouts from the Ravenwing

The geneflaw is in the Melanchromic Organ which allows a marines skin to adapt to radiation levels by changing melanin in the skin. Nocturne's sun puts out a lot of solar radiation so any marine will gain the dark skin to adapt and the flaw stops it from reverting back under normal radiation levels like any other marine.

Lore question. Navigators aside, how much gene modding can nobility in the IoM get away with before they're considered abhuman or mutated? Can they make themselves into squats if they wanted, or do special roids that gives a monkey tail as a side effect? Or is that the realm where you'd need to be a rogue trader to get away with it

I'm a major /yourdudes/ proponent, but customizable subfactions are a major complication for them designing rules. In the past, they've always either been dogshit or massively overused when there's a broken combo.

I think, ideally, "narrative play" should be focused on as the main game mode with a lot more support focused there, and then custom subfactions should probably be confined to that mode. But as long as GW is treating "matched play" as the default way people play the game, custom subfactions become an anchor that limits their options. For example - I have no idea how they would have handled stratagems if they allowed for custom detachments in 10th edition.

In the mean time, you can still embrace the flavor of /yourdudes/ mechanically via your choice of what units you bring, in what quantities, how you equip them, what detachment you pick, etc. If you want to go beyond those options, I strongly recommend trying crusade, if you can.

I agree, and I addressed that in my post. If I had my way, narrative play would be the default, with way more support than matched. But unfortunately, that would require GW to commit to making that happen, beyond the decisions that the rules-writing team get to make. They'd need buy-in from the higher-ups, and after the reception to HH 3.0 rules focus on narrative elements (from what I've heard) I suspect they won't go for it.
