Well, how about I start the ball rolling with a brief battle report? Played a game of 40k2e last Thursday with a friend of mine, it was 1500 points of Blood Axes vs. Iron Snakes. Iron Snake mission was to capture the high ground of the ork settlement and the orks were looking to kick me the fuck out.
I hadn't taken as many photos as I'd have liked, my phone was getting low on battery.

Forces were...
Hero level Chaplain.
Techmarine with a bunch of gear to use up leftover points.
10 man veteran squad with a heavy bolter and a plasma gun, sergeant had a bunch of tactical grenades(all the sergeants and the characters did, in fact.)
A pair of 5 man devastator combat squads with a plasma cannon and autocannon(combat squads from the white dwarf article.)
A pair of dreadnoughts with heavy plasma guns, dreadnought powerfists with stormbolters, and ablative armour upgrades.
A landspeeder with multimelta and heavy flamer.
Orks were composed of...
Warboss in mega armour, powerfist, custom blaster, combat drugs.
Wierdboy and minders.
Kommando captain, he has haywire grenades.
Runtherder and a couple nobs in mega armour, too.
2 big units of gretchin.
Large unit of boys with bolt pistols and axes.
Small unit of blood axe boys in a wartrukk.
A unit of infiltrating kommandos.
4 bases of snotlings
Warbuggie with multimelta
Pair of wartrakks with twin heavy bolters.
An ork dreadnought with lascannon, heavy bolter, and two dreadnought close combat weapons.
Looted Leman Russ.
Am I forgetting anything? Perhaps. I can always ask my mate later what he remembers and clarify.
Deployment
Iron Snakes do something stupid and spread themselves thin to try and meet multiple threats on the table, I don't know why I thought that was a good idea, should have concentrated and set up a killbox to shoot into. Orks have numbers and guns to make concerted push from multiple avenues.

Turn 1.
Orks have the first turn and make use of it by committing to the advance, everything moves up and some shooting goes out, managing to kill a couple of my devastators on my extreme right flank, along with my techmarine in the multimelta blast from my eternal headache, the fucking warbuggie.
In return, the Iron Snakes press cautiously forward with the veterans to form a firing line in the middle and taking a high vantage point with my left flank devastators, I have a plan with my landspeeder thanks to the strategy cards I pulled(flank march and reenforcements) so that was in reserve waiting for turn 2 to spring my pincer attack. My return fire didn't amount to a lot, and I had forgotten to toss blind grenades from the veteran squad(which will cost me).

Turn 2.
Orks keep pushing their armour down my right and overwhelm the devastators, one of the dreads I was anchoring their to support them gets zapped with a haywire grenade by the kommando captain after he reveals himself, costing the dread his powerfist. Ancient Deimos is NOT happy. The looted leman russ blasts my left flank devastators killing a couple of them and the veteran squad also takes some casualties.
In return the Iron Snakes start making moves, veterans space out and advance, gunning down some gretchin who had advanced under fire and I remember to deploy blind grenades to cover myself, all surviving devs make their shots count but I am failed by very poor to wound rolls afterwards, the dreadnoughts make a good accounting of themselves, with Ancient Deimos avenging his left arm by stomping forward into a charge on the kommando captain and stamping him into paste, while Ancient Aritas unleashes plasma on the large horde of greenskins in the middle advance, taking out a nice handful of boys, gretchin and one of the nobs.
I also forget about my strategy card to bring in my landspeeder until my turn is almost over, I refuse the offer to go back for it, I'll just have to deal with what comes, play on!

Turn 3.
Ork infantry advance continues, the blind screens hold, and the kommados reveal themselves and take to shooting at what they can. The warboss decides now's a great time to take A LOT of drugs and in his narcotic haze storms forward to take on Chaplain Nophon. The orks dreadnought repositions itself to stomp through the middle advance and sights Ancient Aritas, a dread fight ensues in the next turn.
Iron Snake assault has undeniably become a failure, with extreme casualties mounting and the landspeeder support still missing from the field, there's little for it but to fight their way clear, to that end shooting goes out to try and thin the herd of greenskins, dreadnoughts move and fire to also try and thin out their numbers but shots go wide or don't hurt enough. The duel between the Warboss and Chaplain ends with Nophon's broken body at the feet of the whooping, overdosing, mongrel warlord, meanwhile Ancient Aritas squares up with their ork counterpart, it's a question if who will get the charge in the next turn.

Turn 4.
In this turn we were too pressed for time, so it was more finishing up the engagements that had happened in turn 3. To summarise, Ancient Deimos traded shots with the various ork vehicles to no effect, the dreadnoughts had their punch up, poor rolls on my part saw Ancient Aritas eating shit and getting his legs snipped off, Landspeeder arrived but far too later for it to matter.
In the end, a very clear Ork victory. And a fun day or gaming. Hopefully I can start making good decisions next time instead of the same mistakes over and over again. Codex Ultramarines doesn't seem to stand out all that much, but I think I'm really not looking deep enough to utilise what's there more effectively. I think a lot of my issues just comes down to impulsice deployment patterns which leads me to not being able to mass my firepower effectively, if I can just unfuck myself there then I reckon I can get some convincing wins to come in. Past that, I've been immensly enjoying myself and 40k2e, it really is a very charming and detailed game and I look forward to more in the future. In fact I'm going to start banging the drum for it and seeing who else locally wants to come and play some retro40k, there's a few shops and clubs in town, surely I can find more people who'd want to give it a go.

So now I've got a lovely boost to my force and some lovely classic models to work on. What a legend.

So, what are people working on lately anyone else been playing games they'd like to share? I've been chipping away at the Iron Snakes here a little more and I have that blood angel project I mentioned too. But I've got some orks and an Imperial Giard force in the pipeline too. Building these all for playing stuff from 1st to 4th edition. Keeping points and model counts low-ish. Making collections to fit roughly 1000-1500 for each edition.

We played a game of 2nd ed again, this time with a scenario. We had a newcomer who was interested in tau so that's what he played with. Scenario was Devilfish Down, where squad of pathfinders had to regroup with another squad in middle of the table while orks closed in on them from all directions. Win condition was to either leave the table edge or defend the position. Game lasted 3+d3 turns to make it harder to plan for strategy. At the end of turn 3 we rolled for 5 turns, so Tau player decided to hold position since it was unlikely he would reach the edge and orks were surrounding his forces fast.

Best retro edition is 4th. 2nd caters to very particular tastes when compared to modern 40k due to its smaller size and much different "style, to the rest of the games lifetime. Meanwhile 6th and 7th are barely retro (and not good edition), and 5th is problematic with its rules imo.

DIY is in the spirit of grog-hood right?
I've been making my own acrylic washes, and haven't really had some proper criticism and feedback on other places I've posted this stuff on what I've made so far.
Basically the objective is idiot proof ink washes that are "soft-bodied" so they don't stain flat surfaces that much but stain recesses and raised details just fine.
In my ink experimentation I made a devlan mud/strong tone (strong tone mimics devlan mud) looking acrylic ink wash and a black wash.
I could genuinely use some criticism and feedback on how I did, and what I could do to improve the ink washes.

IIRC, they originally had different iconography based on which great company they were from, and had the heraldry of the guy leading that company.
When they finally started getting box sets with transfers, this went out the window because everyone just used the decals in the box (which were originally just for a single great company).
I might be remembering incorrectly though.
>>96203672
Honestly? Early to mid 1st ed. The rules are slow, and a bit jank, but the factions largely weren't plastered with faction-specific wargear, weapons and rules... until you started using all the expansions (like the Realm of Chaos rules and later Eldar and Nid lists).

The reasons why you prefer early 1st are honestly the reasons I don't see the appeal - it's so formless it's basically not even an IP in those days, just an excuse to sell whatever third party minis GW had leftover molds for, so if that's your thing why tie yourself down to GW's rules and fluff - such as it was - at all?
40K frankly doesn't really start being 40K until the latter third of RT once the core parts of the setting are nailed down.

I disagree with this position, the core of the setting is already eatablished from the word go. As the edition went on it only kept on expanding that, what we know the space marines to be is laid down in the RT rulebook and then elaborated on again in the white dwarf article a month or two later. And it's the same again as for the orks and eldar and tyranids, all have the fundamentals of who and what they are defined and then elaborated on again in later supplements to the degree that we all know them to be from later editions. 40k was 40k from the start, and it was only the rule system itself that saw major development from a traditional, managed wargame with an encouraged arbitrator into the more structured game we're more familiar with now. The fluff additions of later editions really don't change a lot, there's in introduction and reduction of named characters as time went on, elaborated and introduced timeline events(Badab gets expanded and things like Picsina IV, Ichar V, EoT, Armaggedon are introduced), minor details about the factions we first saw in RT changed, had parts dropped or retconned, or had new things added in, but they were still mostly the same as introduced.
This may be a silly question, but where can I buy metal recasts of 1st or 2nd edition space marines, if there are any? I don't really care that they're not original. I just don't like the plastic.

If you are somewhere else then the offer is smaller and you will need to pay big shipping and taxes which sucks. I envy people from UK or US just for this one thing, they get cheaper minis

I'm sure the table layout will be familiar to some of you.
This second game was also great fun. And while I houseruled that the Orks would have a Dreadnought to even the odds, the Space Marines won the scenario (as usual).

Both games were great fun, so now we're talking of starting a new campaign set on the Eye of Terror, using 3E 40K. Also the guys at the club are preassuring me to join their Mordheim campaign. But all that might have to wait for a bit, since for the next month I'll be working on getting my germans ready for a Bolt Action v3 tournament.
How about you friends? Any grog games this weekend?
What's your Top 3 Old World factions right now and what's your Top 3 most desired new (old) factions you hope to see (RE)released?

Thats all I got, sorry. I'd love to add them to mega if you happen to find them
Any ideas for urban terrain?
I wanna make some Khrushchevka style apartment blocks that stand really tall(a foot?) and are about one foot by one foot, because I'm a slave to spectacle.
I'm not really sure other than that. I was thinking ground floor would just be a generic foyer, but I like the idea of mixed development, where theres a store on the ground level, or even on the ground and first levels, or maybe make the ground and first floor a transit hub?
But if not mixed developments, then maybe seperate buildings for warehouse stores? Like grimdark Costco.
Any other ideas for infrastructure or buildings would be appreciated. I was thinking office buildings might be a good idea too?
Any ideas for industrial would be appreciated too. I was thinking power relays/transformers, and big saw tooth roofed buildings that could be either manufactories or warehouses.

Rather than using color trims to show which company they belong to and symbol to show what type of marine they are. They switched it around... so they are instead using colors to indicate what type of marine they are (tac, assault, vet...etc..), and each squad then got their own symbols.
And instead of using color trims to show what company they belong to, they got a company marking instead of a chapter marking.
Sadly this kinda ends up with every artist drawing every single Space Wolf as if they belong to the Ragnar Blackmane company.

Commie bloc countries build a lot of shit according to templates. Like, you could find almost identical 2-level shopping malls across the country (also interesting cover-wise). Garages are a popular fixture too.

cool, im wanting to build template style because itll be easier for me to make multiples of them.
maybe make the first two levels different stores(grocers, garages, hardware, ect), and then generic hallways with rooms. Rooms i was thinking could look like pic related.
this way I can just have seperate levels and players at my local can just grab as many levels as they want. Maybe make a few "destroyed" levels so you can have only half a building(could also use it as a way to destroy building in game)

More like a bunch of small dachas on a fenced area divided into individual gardens for private (not exactly, but eh) owners who can build little houses on their lots, plant vegetables for extra food variety (remember that communism = shortages, and they hit city people much harder than villagers who grew their own food) or just decorative gardens to have a private leisure retreat.
>>96258978
Oh, fascinating. Something like pic related could probably be well suited for such a concept. Would give variety to the city scape as well; more terrain options fr players at my local.
Two stories tall, open concept(aka empty and bleak to not only hammer in the dystopic imperial lifestyle but also got models inside of) and backyard with hydroponics or something. Maybe a bench.
>>96259049
Also, re: shopping malls, I did NOT meant the big GUM-style department stores, but the smaller ones with lots of individual shops exiting to common outdoor paths. You'd have to go binge image search and save whatever looks interesting, for Polish ones you could search "pawilony handlowe prl", not sure how these types are called in other languages.

Continuing cleanup I'm noticing subtle design differences compared to some of the metal minis I own. An annoying one is that the thigh pouches have been removed from the sculpt, but instead of resulting something else it's just a flat blank spot like it's meant for a piece to glue there but none are provided in the box. Looking close at the box art minis even they just have this flat awkward spot. So I'm digging through my bits box to find enough pouches and grenade bits to cover up at least the right (more visible) thigh on each mini.
So anyone wondering, yes I am clipping them off the sprue with cheap clips but this is exceptionally soft plastic which is causing all the deformation. I'm scraping and I'll be green stuffing. At least it appears the should pads cover the should joint so I'll gs it but it doesn't need to be perfect

Unrelated note, do we ever find out anything substantial lore wise about the Necromundan 8th. The supposed "Spider Clan"? They're said to be very powerful on the planet, but I don't recall them getting mentioned in Necromunda.
First named Guard regiment and they have almost no lore, kinda sad.
Chipping away. Scraped away the vestigial thigh pads from all 30 guys and did a first pass mold clean. Gave out 15 shotguns. There's supposed to be two squad leaders but there's no special bits so I found a pair of leftover helmet plumes to make the squad leaders stand out.

iirc, the trick to playing the Chaos player is...close assault. Except for with the dreadnought. The white dice are so bad that even a gretchin has a passable chance of killing a marine. Only the Marine Captains are a risk up-close.
That said, your job is to make the game fun for the marine players, rather than to beat them to death with your minions.

Yes! It's a book called Warhammer 40,000 : Rogue Trader . You don't need anything other than that to play, although I do most strongly recommend the Realm of Chaos supplements.
In all seriousness, I've found that most of the rules adjustments from white dwarf are not changes to the main text per say, they're more often additional special rules or equipment for specific armies. Things like Harlequins ability to make an extra move past an opponent as they fight them in close combat, or improving space marines toughness and weaponskill when they're wearing their powered armor. As well as more organized and proscribed army lists for most factions, namely genestealer cults and harlequins. These can all be found in the collected volumes "Compendium" and "Compilation". Not to mention the famous Ork books, and the aforementioned Realm of Chaos books
Once you get to the point where they started changing things like how combat and vehicles work you might as well just play 2nd edition because the spark that makes it uniquely rogue trader is gone and it feels too streamlined.
Keep it in the 80s.

Yeah melee meta is powerful if you know how to play it, you have to force marines into melee on their own turn to make them waste their shooting, especially against heavy weapons. Yeah, as a chaos player you have to balanced the game to avoid shitting on marine players and not letting them walk over you. My style is to divide blips into stacks and shuffle them, that way I know what kind of pieces I have on board without knowing which one is what, keeps it interesting for everyone. My players also do some pvp, like shooting missile launchers into empty squares and blasting gretchins with plasma when theres another marine behind it. Fuckers also blockade each others boarding torpedos.

If that's you're personal collection, it's admirable - And in a sense, I agree with you there, I'm saying the best way to figure out what rules he wants to use is to start with the main rulebook and branch out from there. It sounds like he hasn't played this edition much before, so he's going to have a tough time trying to manage all those books at once when just the first has more than enough content for years of gameplay. It also depends on what army he plays, he's not going to get a lot of mileage out of slaves to darkness (my personal favorite book) if he only plays Imperial Guard now is he?

Absolutely not. This board does not need another 40k exclusive general, and these threads are getting to be crudded up to uselessness by the tedious middlehammer numbercrunching. His question was fairly stupid, but don't use that as an excuse to try and squeeze fantasy out of our oldhammer thread.
I for one would like to see more weird and disarticulated Old-school fantasy stuff. Individual figures, dioramas, concept art, whatever advances the cause

Question for midhammer(?) grogs: I wanna collect a small force of Elysian Drop Troops, and was wondering what a typical, well rounded, yet lore-accurate army list would look like for them.
Any experience would help. Codex: Armageddon, Taros 3rd and 5th eds, even the Harakoni Warhawk regimental doctrine from the 3.5 codex.
From reading the Taros book and the Codex: Armageddon, it seems to be mostly infantry with special weapons supported by valks that act both as transport and flying tanks, maybe with some drop Sentinels acting as weapon platforms for the boys. Drop in on objectives, and try to snatch as many victory points as possible before you're dead?
Thanks in advance!

Basically yeah, anything that is either drop in or flying fits with them. Just know your opponents will hate you.
I know most of you don't count it as old hammer, but 5th edition is getting pretty long in the tooth, so I bought myself a box of Assault on Black Reach and I can't wait to work on it and play with it again. The funky little monopose Space Marines, the sickass Dreadnought, the Commander, the 5 man squad of Terminators, the Ork Boyz with their Deffkopta support, Nobs and Warboss.

My fav models are almost exclusively the Orks in that box, with special guest the Marine Captain. Those deffkoptas are definitive for me imo; as a kid I never liked the metal model but fell in love with the plastics from AoBR. And the Nobz were just really impressive for how simple they are. And the details on the warboss is so fucking good. That shotgun in the holster on his back? Ooooh marone

When the finally color is yellow I personally use Vallejo's Iraqi Sand. I've tried pink and it just didn't work out for me. Picrel how I paint it. I usually use an orange wash gently in the recess or painted over certain area like a glaze. If it's on hard armor I'll highlight the edges up to white.
For this painting guide I think the intention of yellow over white was fine since the yellow itself is an underlayer so any sport hung will be covered.

On-topic, I jotted down my first ever 2E list, for Eldar. I won't really be able to swap out models anytime soon (aside having more guardians) as I want to use approximately period accurate minis, and my collection is pretty limited at the moment. This list is mainly to have a painting goal, hopefully I'll find a gaming buddy from my city for a small game. Am I fucked against marines with this?
Farseer, laspistol, force sword - 180pts
8 Guardians, shuriken catapults, leader w. power sword - 118pts
3 Striking Scorpions - 78pts
3 Warp Spiders - 123pts
= 499pts

One of the worst introductions to 40k along with the other "starter" (you get 3 models and like 4 paint pots) sets from the nu-hammer era

Like this is a legit starter set you could actually play full dynamic matches of 40k with it
what are the feelings on 5th ed? I have some friends wanting to try Old 40k but one has a large necron collection and want to be able to use his Lychguard, deathmarks, ect.

I'm a big fan, it's really straight forward, there's little quibbling over vague phrasing of rules (in my experience of Marines vs Chaos Marines and Orks vs Dark Eldar) a good selection of units to choose from, lore that I enjoy and not a massive amount of minis required to field armies. I do wish it had Combat Patrol though. Sure, you can run the old rules and make allowances here and there, but something official would have been nice. I play Crimson Fists and enjoy it quite a lot.

Battle for Macragge was the single best starter set GW ever made to teach someone the game, it stuns and amazes me that people will write it off because they couldn't have been able to use its contents to boost an existing or spearhead a fresh army. It guided the player through everything they needed to learn about the core rules until they were ready to crack on and start an army of their own, the BfM scenario booklet is a masterclass that should have been on every competitors radar for years to come as the standard to follow. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills sometimes when I read other peoples thoughts on these things out here on the net.

Yeah, though it did take me about 25 years to get all of the books. Started off with just a copy of RT and Freebooterz. Citi Block was a bit of a surprise - it's RT's red-haired step-child of an expansion, but has the first rules for hive gangs in it.
I hope the poor guy doesn't choose guard... The RT Guard list is seriously restrictive - your first 1,300 points is always 4 tactical squads and a command section with a Lieutenant. All armed with Las Cannons and grenade launchers for support (in a game where any sane player tends to use mostly infantry).

I've begun to suspect that the RT lists are made for Narrative campaign play - You write up a huge army, then a GM gives you objectives and you split up your army into smaller forces.
The core rules-set plays pretty well on its own, as long as you remember the errata that fixes some of the mis-printed points values (can't remember if its in a White Dwarf or the Book of the Astronomican).

The problem would be that early RT is a very different game than Late 1st edition. You could almost write 2 different battle bibles.
As it is, you're probably better off starting with the main rule book. It's a flexible ruleset (though you may find space marines extremely fragile compared to how they are nowadays - Toughness 3 with a 4+ modifiable save...).

A rule set put forth by Bryan Ansell (Laserburn, Confrontation) is really only suitable for the enjoyment of the needlessly complex. May god have mercy on his soul.

How are your gits going to clean their teeth or stich up the cuts from their latest tumble without the relevant squigs? Squig lore runs deep.

Laserburn isn't really complicated, just a bit fiddly. If you keep it to the skirmishes it was designed for, a gang or so per side, it plays relatively quick in my experience.

Oi, Grogs, got a question for you.
Any of you lot ever played Invasion? It looks dope. Basically, it's a supplement for Battle Fleet Gothic that has you fight out boarding actions, sabotage attempts, officer assassination etc using actual minis and altered rules. Let me know if you have any experience with it.
For those of you not familiar with it the rules can be found here

I played it a bit, the problem was it took way too goddamned long to resolve a boarding action in an actual game. Fine on its own. It's sort of based on RT's City Block rules, and eventually became Zone Mortalis. It's also quite similar to the interior combat rules from Warzone 1e.

Plastic model plants, plastic model palm trees, but they look like vomit until they get painted. Check the related tabs and click around.
There are a few plants that are pieces of fake potted plants and aquarium stuff, but the bread and butter are plastic chinese model plants.

Aside from pulling all the superheavy vehicle rules into a single book, something they could have easily done as a free booklet and given away with White Dwarf, the Apocalypse rules were pretty unnecessary.
People were having high points multiplayer games since probably Fantasy first edition never mind 40k and getting on fine without an official book of missions and tweaked rules.

Comprehensive White Dwarf content indices up to 2012, so 4th edition 40k and 7th WFB, plus all the specialist games and and pre Bryan Ansell game content.

I'm kitbashing the dreadnought from various sentinel, dreadnought, vehicle accessory parts and whatever plasticard and putty abominations I can concoct while the predator is getting partially scratch built to complete a partial mk.1 rhino kit I have.
