The whole point of ignoring GW's shitty "lore" is that the timeline *shouldn't* move in any kind of official, overarching way, it should stay *as it was* and any changes should be something for you and your mates as a result of your games, your army fluff, Your Dudes. 40k's timeline never progressed in any meaningful, non-local way. It's why you had the Gothic War, the Badab War, and the Siege of Vraks, which had a "progression" that was an insignificant time-frame that only affected - at worst - a single sector. It's how you have the rich lore of FFG's gamelines, that have detailed histories of various areas but no actual progression.

Why? It's simple. 40k is meant to be a sandbox where you can make your own characters, groups, and locations, with everything culminating to the "1 second to midnight" event of the 13th (spooky number) Black Crusade in 40,999 (aka just before it stops being Warhammer 40,000 and the 41st millenium).

Only now because we have settingwide progression, it can no longer be about your guys, or the better smaller stories, now there has to be main characters that matter more than anyone else since they're on the galactic stage. Every Guardsman has to be Cadian, since that's the regiment on the galactic stage, the primarchs have to keep coming back because they're the only ones who truly matter, the Emperor has to be something other than a distant setting figurehead, the apocalypse can't happen or be threatened to happen, since that tanks sales, etc etc.

Warhammer was never really that interesting of a setting before GW ruined it. Wrong again. The Indomitus Era is the new 13th Black Crusade. Lots of small wars but the plot is now eternally stuck at another point.

And that was in the background for decades before Alan Bligh fleshed out the Badab War, dumbass. All Alan Bligh did was flesh it out. Vraks, meanwhile, is just the Imperium shooting itself in the foot and fighting a pointless war that Chaos wanted the entire time. It's self-contained (aside from negatively affecting the logistics around Segmentum Obscurus in the long run).
