appreciate that dude, there are a bunch of 3D printed basing bits on them. Rocks are pine bark, mixed dirt grits and tile grout for the sand. Base vegetation is mix of fine foam flock, loose static grass and a crushed up dried leaf. Little bushes and shit are moss and lichen. Mushrooms are mostly wire and greenstuff. Bunch of random tufts collected over the years.
Vegetation might have been fine unpainted but wanted to try full painting them

Yes, I do a layer of sand/grit then once its dry I do a layer of base vegetation. Its that fine foam flock model railroad guys use, neon green loose static grass and like mixed herbs/crushed leaf matter. Both applied with quick drying PVA mixed with water.
To get the loose static grass to stand up I genuinely use a balloon I rub against the hairs on my leg to build a static charge, does the job

Somebody probably asked this before but - when painting miniatures or models up to 10cm in size, it is better to prime in grey or black? I heard opinions that black is better for achieving more natural shadows but then again, it would make all layers appear darker, at least initially.

I had sprue goo made from the remnants of a bottle of Tamiya ET Cement, and I tried to top it up with liquid from a bottle of Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner, and it's not dissolving in cleanly. The new liquid is kind of just sitting on top of the previous goo instead of incorporating and homogenizing.

The fuck is going on here? Is the lore about the ET Cement and Airbrush Cleaner being the same a lie? Does the supposed ~2% difference in formulation make a difference when mixing them? Is the hobby shop I got the Airbrush Cleaner run by scalliwags who refilled the container with regular acetone??

No, it is not, it's literally one of the oldest tricks in scale modelling. I've been using it for ages, and everyone I know does too.

Another person falls victim to GW's intentionally badly designed pots. There's a reason literally every other company uses dropper bottles. GW uses those pots because they cause exactly this scenario so now you gotta go buy more, plus on the non-wash paints they can build up residue that prevents a seal, which in turn ruins the paint if you don't catch it in time. Plus you can't extract a single drop of paint to put on your palette.

>>96216251
>>96216253
Gelugons best devils. Cool guy. Where's the model from?

>>96216388
The remaining sprue goo down the bottom might have started curing in which case it will take a lot longer for the fresh solvent to dissolve it. You can accelerate the process by forcing it to mix with a toothpick initially, leave it for an hour and then vigorously shake the shit out of it like a small child. If after the above it's still not dissolving, do a test with the new airbrush cleaner you bought and a bit of untouched sprue to see if it still works; it's not unheard of to get a bad batch that's fucked.

I've never done airbrushing beyond a priming session or basecoat. Did you start with the shade blue, then do smaller and smaller puffs until you reached the zentih with your lightest blue? then you did the metal trim right? I never understood how people swear by airbrushes for army painting because most models have too much overlapping detail unless your talking about space marines or power armored single color armies.

also what is with the palm of the hand?

Get smaller mixing balls. I have a few like what you're talking about and it's inconvenient but you can buy 100+ balls at any diameter past 4mm. I have my share of citadel paints also but that's largely because I started out because of friends being into warhammer and when I first started painting I used all their paints and paid them back by pooling new ones into the collection. There's a few citadel paints I'm fond of; their blood paint and the tesseract glow are alright but overall I don't like the general quality of their paints and they expire two or three times faster than the other paints I have. It's hard to tell if they separate out so quickly because they're dogshit quality or because they're in different containers that encourage that to happen.

edge highlights are alright for a first timer. personally I don't think edge highlighting looks good most of the time it's done, especially on space marine armor since it is very round and the edges are so close to areas of trim or recesses.

Your eyes are pretty sick though. and I'm shocked you actually drilled the barrels.

you need more black or dark blue shade on some of the areas. particularly on the fist and where each section of the arm meets. such as where the bicep of the right arm meets the shoulder armor. the red cloth also looks good. is the helmet supposed to be a brighter color than the armor?

I don't care how good anything else is Leadbelcher will never not be my standard silvery metal, Mephiston Red will never not be my standard vibrant red. I thought wraithbone would be chunky and shitty but it actually remixes fine and goes on smooth over a white primer so now its permanently the basecoat for a tyranid scheme. Sometimes you just get the result you're looking for with something and the possibility of finding a cheaper alternative isn't worth the experiment. There's obviously other paints in other ranges that are the same. One of the pro acryl greys is a literally perfect white.

My first hobby purchase was like a set of a few dozen vallejos. It wasn't a bad purchase because it feels like I generally have something close enough to whatever minor colour I might need for a detail, while also building up a collection from citadel and other since, but its like a complete dice roll what each vallejo one is going to turn out to be like. The black is very silky, gunmetal is good for a grungy sort of oily looking metal, the mid to dark blues really good, then there's an almost unusable light blue that seperates like crazy and a red that's meant to be standard red but is kinda dark and lifeless. Its like Russian roulette where one out of every few paints just turns out to have some kind of disappointing issue.

You still need to thin TTC paints, but I'm finding myself using them instead of Citadel reds lately for some things - especially Sanguine Scarlet and Demon Red - although there ironically hasn't been a whole lot of red going on in the most recent Blood Angels that I painted.

NTA but strongly disagree. Individual paints in their application might be good but the product quality across the board is abysmal. I recently went two months without touching my paints; all of my citadel ones had separated significantly while none of my other paints showed any signs of deterioration. Add to that the packaging which is designed to fuck over the consumer; higher likelihood of spill, loss of far more paint if a spill does occur, clogging of the pot if paint residue builds up on the rear side which in turn causes the paint to irreversibly die off if you don't catch it in time. Citadel paints aren't at all worth the asking price. There are some paints from them that I'll go out of my way to keep a stock of because those individual ones are good enough to outweigh the downsides of buying them but otherwise, I'd rather buy literally any other brand.

>>96220271
Everyone says it because it's true. Just because it's a popular refrain doesn't make it untrue or even bad to point out; a dogshit product's negative qualities are foundational to establishing why it is a dogshit product. Instead of wheeling out the gamer words at people for voicing valid opinions, why not retort with the positive qualities of citadel paints? It'll be a short list, you won't even have to type all that long.

>>96220523
They are by definition poorly designed. Look at every other competitor on the market. They're all using dropper bottles. They're basically foolproof; if you knock one over with gusto you lose maybe one or two drops of paint, they can't clog and kill the entire contents and you can easily measure out reliable single drops of paint for mixing. It's deliberate on GW's part so that you potentially knock over a $10 paint and have to go buy more, which is another opportunity to convince you to buy more plastic crack while in the store.

I mostly agree but there's a couple factors that other paints have that make them desireable. The new P3 deliberately covers like shit, which is useful for glazes, and some of the newer acrylics have a mixed solvent base that makes them stronger and easier to airbrush. I would also mention contrasts/speed paints but they just released the best line on the market, so it doesnt really count anymore.
Also, AK is weird with colors. Sometimes you simply cant get your hands on some of the more exotic teals or greys.

I feel like desks are so basic that its not really like buying a chair, where some are basically fake products so uncomfortable they're not fit for purpose. I just got whatever the standard ikea table of appropriate size was and its been perfect. That said I'm using an office chair so I'm able to adjust height to exact level I want, otherwise the height of the table might become a factor, could easily be a little too high or low to rest your elbows properly.

It is dependent on space, but if possible I do recommend a decently sized rectangular table with seperate legs, a normal desk. For a little while I tried using a little square folding table with like two criss-crossing squares for "legs", and it just did not work at all. Not enough space, not enough open space underneath it for your legs, wobbly.

Yeah real moss and lichen, its been collected more than a year back so is very dry. I dip it into watered down pva, it will suck up the pva and "fill out" where the fuzz will fluff out when wet. The PVA kind of plasticizes the moss when its dry, its hard to the touch and doesn't bend. Acrylic paint coats after that also help seal it in a plastic coat.
That said I've still got old moss ferns that I didn't treat with PVA at all on bases from 10 years back and they are all fine but have lost some color and gone brown vs green.

Then drybrush of cream/offwhite followed by a bunch of darker washes/inks/contrasts to add some shadows then back to washes of the basecoat colors to put some saturation back.

While people seethe about AI for good reasons i'm actually surprised how good chatgpt was for spitballing my own kitbashing ideas.
The full kitbash ideas were a bit on the generic side but once I explained my own it was on-point with suggesting improvements like how to angle the models, tying together different parts thematically, scaling down 3d prints in the back to de-emphasize them compared to the main units, basing placements to avoid clutter and it could even give advice between different gw kits on what vibes they'd give off and how that'd fit with the rest of it.
Even gave some decent paint scheme suggestions I might try out.

Doesn't exist.
pre-shade with a cool purple/blue and
then zenithal or drybrush a white/light-grey.
Use doomfire magenta contrast (probably thinned, it's very strong), and then mix a custom paint using the Worlds Pinkest Pink pigment and your medium of choice to do the first highlighting pass and point highlights with a paler pink like any light pink you can find in regular mini ranges.

Idk what I'm talking about by the way.

No, not all of them, but most of the line is desaturated and not all colors have proper saturated variants.

It's very easy to desaturate a color by adding some white/grey/black, but it's impossible to make it more saturated. I'd like the line to be far more saturated from the start. My most used colors are only available as muted tones (blueish purple and cyan/teal).

I dropped going over it but it was a mortis engine proxy, don't feel like going back to find my exact questions but I made a similar one here as an example using the more generic options that it provided me.
I first asked for ideas for mortis engines that are more oldhammer in style than the official one, which i'm not a fan of, and it gave me different options including listing gw kits or alternative stls.
I asked it to expand on one of the options, a corpse cart kitbash, while giving a more extensive painting guide and generating a diagram (less relevant for this model but it did it for mine and it helped a bit).
This isn't as verbose as the actual output but is roughly what it went over and while neat it only helped a little bit on my actual kitbash with the scaling and facing.
Anonymous No.96229899 [Report] >>96233129

It was more pic related that actually helped me, I had a few options but wasn't sure of which one to go with and it just described the vibe they would add and some options I could go with to change around the model to make it fit better. I didn't use any of them directly but it did help me rule out some and gave me something to go on.
That's more or less it. Just a neat thing I thought and was surprised at the decent responses.

I don't paint terrain with good paints other than a coat of spray paint. I mostly base with a halfway decent rattle can in a relevant color, pick out some details, oil wash or 2, and varnish.

Not to rag on it or anything but AK, like a lot of these trendchaser super flat finish paints from the last few years, are flat because matte finish = pro to noobs. And they get that finish with fillers. That's why they are muted (and they are). Flat is the opposite of saturated, in all paint, by definition. They also have good coverage even for colors that simply cannot have good coverage, like yellow. Guess how that coverage is achieved? More white, grey and black pigments (fillers). That's why those colors are more muted.
For the best example of this fact that hobby/tg people will be familiar with, look at Corax White. Everybody is always "it's not even white!" which is true, and "it's bad paint" which is midwittery. It's so off-white because it has a lot of fillers to give it the incredible coverage it has. Which is why you can coat over jet black with it in two thin coats. It's very bad at being pure white, but very good at covering over anything easily for you to build up to a pure white with whatever other paint.
When you haven't stirred a pot of it up, you can see all that carbon-black dust in the bottom. That's the filler pigments that make it opaque. All your AK paints have the same thing going on as well. Nobody's invented a yellow or a red or an ultramarine pigment that covers any better than ones we had 200 years ago. Minis paints use fillers, which also make them flatter finish. On house paints or auto paints, that means they are the lowest grade of paint and the least durable with the worst vibrancy. For minis paints, people accept it because beginners like the super flat finish anyway, it dramatically improves coverage (important for fast paintjobs) and it looks less garish and cartoony than more intense colors tend to look. They are, in a word, "safe" paints and forgiving. I myself don't paint Space Marines or many other bright, artificial looking colors so a more desaturated look reads as naturalistic to me, which is often what I want.

I have now made sure none of you ever use your pathetic unskilled sausage fingers to spill a paint pot, which only a small child should have done, ever again.

very brave of you to assume someone won't just knock it over along with the holder
Anonymous No.96233559 [Report]
>>96233554
Impossible. You'd have to sweep the entire thing entirely off of a table. They physically cannot be knocked over in the holder due to leverage. Although if somebody is over maybe 9 years of age and is still capable of spilling a paint pot, I have to assume they also fall down flights of stairs, step into empty elevator shafts, have cut off several fingers while opening cans and have lost most of their vision from staring into the sun.

The Ecclesiarchy one works fine. I used organic supports I think, but you can get by without any assuming you are not super 'tistic about a pot holder's details. I'll dig up the Mechanicus one as well if anyone cares though.

Hobby stuff is why I have a room full of different printers. For FDM I just use it for painting related doodads like this, and sometimes terrain. Really makes off-the-shelf paint storage look laughable, that's for sure.

I am painting this dude. Do you guys think giving him a gloss varnish then using a white ink so it flows into the recesses would work? The runes are the main part of the mini and I want to do something cool.

i'd probably airbrush a light blue with a stencil or small needle over the runes then do the varnish and ink panel line

Still WIPs, but how well do these grey scratches read as scuff and wear on the gun? I tried to put them in places where maybe the weapon was grazed by enemy fire or wear the marine might have bludgeoned someone with it.

They're not very visible to be honest with you. Maybe paint the scratches with a silver instead and use this grey to highlight them? Or just paint silver lines along what you already have

AK paint is objectively desaturated, and I explained why that fact is the way it is and why those decisions were made. As the post clearly stated.
