Never heard of /tg/ being done in a church or public space other than the occasional introductory game aimed at younger players at a public library or game clubs at larger universities being able to book conference rooms in the student union.
In the USA game stores are expected to have a large playing space and host events. And there's a tragedy of the commons aspect where the neckbeards who never leave the store will scare away high-functioning nerds, female players, etc. So there's sort of a hit and run thing going on where you'll visit the game store to buy stuff or recruit a couple players but retreat to your private clique.
