Brianne is the poster child for the Old Guard, a long time fighter of the Dark and the Corporations who has battled alongside countless teams and trained numerous young heroes to be. She holds onto hope that things can truly change like she holds onto her blade.

Around the younger types she tries to maintain a upbeat and happy persona but her long term battles with the justice system trying to score even slight wins has left her quite jaded under that facade, taking a contract that isn't quite as clean as her previous ones. Ste've has turned her much more militant in her approaches and anyone who seeks to directly battle the corporations can count on her to come along for the ride.

Her reserves of magic seem absurd and her skill with the blade is no less impressive, her spells typically take the form of strikes of the blade rather than direct magic, creating a minefield of slashes suspended in time waiting for an unfortunate enemy to stumble into them.

Narcissistic, hubristic, tempestuous. These are all words Boomo cannot spell, yet he lives them every day. He has been around the block for a while, fought the corpos, punched out some dark spirits, hit on every magical girl he met (and one he thought was a girl). The never ending battle against the darkness of the city got to him like it has with so many others. Semi retirement is what Boomo calls it but most would call it starting a podcast to talk about the state of the city. Although it often leads to him talking about some girls ass or him shilling his merchandise. He will cover whatever recent conspiracy he has stumbled on, but many just think he is a buff wack job who sometimes sells water filtration devices.

All things considered Boomo is a pretty happy person, he makes enough money to party all the time and he only really fights when he needs to. He might have mommy issues and constantly seeks the attention of women, magical ones more so. It's not that he is a bad person, he is just full of himself. The old lady will get helped across the street, she might just have to watch Boomo flex first (and after).

While somewhat rusty with his fighting his physique has not dimished. Prefering to launch himself fist first into any fight, he will fall back onto his fire magic should might not be enough. His control over time magic has greatly dimished without practice and he hardly uses it, but in his heyday he recalls using it a lot to look womens skirts. Mostly he is just wasted potential but he certainly doesn't see it that way.

Gerard Gunman has long since been fighting The Dark from the inside, gaining enough trust to analyze and modify the digital infrastructure as an Information Technology specialist. Though this hasn’t been without its costs, as the upper echelons within the City indulge in some of the most vile things man can think of, let alone what inklings of supernatural torment they bring unto the populace that he has to bear witness too without losing his cool or perhaps even his sanity.

Thus, when Gerard dons his Regalia and is on duty as a Luminary he….behaves a fair bit more like his hot-headed contemporaries within the Luminous Knights than a typical member of the Old Guard. This most commonly displayed by his Spell usage, as he could very well use his Ultimate Art and his prodigious Technomancy to continuously modify himself into nigh-invulnerability like a certain Divine General in another reality, he instead primarily uses his Magic to push his Mecha-Regalia to yet further heights of speed and power to personally turn the enemies of The Light into mulch with his bare(?) hands.

Cursing the ribbon allows it to inflict disaster on anyone it touches, a blessing of Celerity gives it even greater speed and precision, and Force increases its power to pierce and slice through materials, while the mana flowing through helps better resists other magic that impact the bindings. As long as physical contact is maintained and mana is supplied, the effect will remain.

The newest member of The City's police department, she joins as a junior detective, having graduated at the top of her class at the academy. From the outset, she can be rather strict and by the book when following the rules and protocols, but oftentimes her friendly and altruistic nature can shine through as she helps citizens throughout the day. What can be seen as the ideal face of law enforcement quickly crumbles once most people realize she's the biggest dork when not dealing with responsibilities. A purveyor of plenty of niche interests, the biggest of which is her love of kung fu and old spaghetti westerns. Depictions of clear black and white moralities have led her to have a more naive outlook on the war of light and dark. Sure, she knows that corporations are evil, but she still believes in the good found in everyone and that justice will always prevail in the end. Something she might need to properly learn from her senior luminaries.

That's not the only influence old movies have on her. Her use of magic is heavily inspired by martial arts, specifically a form of imperial karate focused more on strikes rather than throws, charging her moves into an Electric God Fist, or using telekinesis to dash through the air and into her opponent. Similar to her personality, she tends to be a very direct and honest combatant, usually avoiding subterfuge unless it's the last resort. In an actual scenario, she'll focus on protecting bystanders from harm, using a combination of force and spirit to block incoming physical and magical attacks.

Her regalia is similarly influenced by her personality, donning a ceremonial military uniform as her outfit and the accompanying formal gloves as her implement; her appearance is representative of her pure white belief and dedication to others. To her, a true leader is one that serves the people and not the other way around. There is a slight quirk where, due to her spirit guide being a rabbit, her outfit comes with a set of rabbit ears and a tail, ones that she usually suppresses with cosmetic magic unless she needs to go all out or is surprised.

Just like other luminaries, her limitations on dark magic are still intact or only slightly leaking. Her Psychic specialization is a corruption of her authority and desire for control, one that has piqued the interest of one who lives in nightmares. After all, who better to enforce fear than the enforcers themselves, especially if things go off record. Other than that, her ultimate move called Electronic Decelerator, is a form so charged with energy that lightning crackles as she speaks. A form that once corrupted by chaos turns her pristine uniform into a sterile lab coat and her electric attacks into means of conditioning her opponents with the right amount of shock therapy. "Why waste that intelligence on a lifetime of service?"

Hey anon, looking at the builds again, a lot of people have seem to go in the corruption/blackpilled direction and we already have a Hacker for the Forces of Good. I'd still like to keep up the conjoined backstory of Depressed Old Guard Squad but we could probably use more overtly hype/Light builds.

I was considering dropping Hackerwoman and replacing her with Punk Rock Anarchist Old Guard who makes massive problems for everyone - but particularly the Corporations - and acts as a sort of icon and banner for Luminaries, but is plagued by the usual artist fears and doubts magnified by the Dark/Illusion part of her nature. Does this ruin anything on your end? They could still absolutely have been a part of the same Squad and have the same vibes of burning themselves out to uplift the next generation, they just went in different directions.

A Luminary that could be mistaken for a regular office lady, if not for the horns atop her head and the tail flicking behind her back, marks of her pact with a Dark Spirit known as The Abbot Of The Temple Of Man.

Aloof and weary-eyed, she treats her duties with professional detachment and a fixed schedule. There's her usual 9 to 5, in which she infiltrates the belly of the beast to uncover their Dark plots, climbing the corporate ladder while performing sabotage with Cursed Arts. Of course, she always takes some unpaid overtime and extra projects to accelerate her promotions and the downfall of her employers. Beyond that, she has weekly night shifts, when she goes out to fulfill one Pact or another, crushing the more brainless threats and horrors roaming the City with the overwhelming power of a Physicality and Pact Specialist.

Jane has no hobbies, no life prospects, and her friends can be counted in one hand. Day by day, night by night, she spends what are supposed to be her golden years as a tool of her patrons, writing checks for Dark spirits that must be cashed with her mind, body, and soul. Seeing her outside her Regalia would be a once in a lifetime event.

But it was not always like this. Once upon a time, Jane had eight hours of sleep every night, and a squad walking side by side with her. She would charge into battle with a smile, spouting the cheesiest of catch-phrases before unleashing her super moves, striking poses as her enemies fell alongside the rubble.

Then, they bit something too big for them to chew. An operation involving all-out-war between the Triumverate. One of their Soul Gems shattered forever, ending the battle in her dying throes, but leaving the remaining two in despair. Jane's despair turned into bitter rage and a desire for revenge. She could not uproot the corporations through brute strength, so she would rot them from within.

Nowadays, that rage has withered into a cold, pale flame. Between all the schedules, meetings, and contracts, after all the death and sacrifice she has witnessed, all the corpses she has walked over to not blow her cover, she struggles to remember why she began following the Light, and her methods are becoming indistinguishable from her enemy's. She can't see an end to her work, but must keep going, or else everything up to this point was for nothing.

As a Contact, she's a member of the Old Guard, an informant on the moves and plans of most big corporations, who tries to sprinkle some personal advice to younger Luminaries so they don't repeat her mistakes.

Her pact with The Abbot grants her a conceptual cloak, the demon wearing the coat of the righteous. She can mentally create multiple identities for herself, emitting an aura of Delirium that works even on magic targets. To one corporation, she could be known as Jane Doe, the new girl who joined days ago, and to another, Mary Jane, a manager who pops up once in a week for a meeting. Her enemies can't glimpse at her true nature as a Luminary even if she uses her magic, perceiving her as a Dark ritualist.

People unaware of the supernatural can't see the markings at all, and tend to avoid her subconsciously.

Luminaries are immune to the depravation of the Dark. This is a fact that they all accept as truth - Except sometimes a soul blackens itself without outside influence. Cue the Black Hare, a eccentric practitioner of all sorts of dark arts best left untouched. She seems to enjoy messing with people more than anything, and while sometimes helpful she's always unpredictable.

She publishes a newspaper by and for Luminarys called 'Wonderland' that uncannily reports on all sorts of things that should really be secret. Causing problems for both corporations and fellow luminarys alike when a issue falls into the wrong hands. She has made numerous crazy escapes - at times seeming to walk on air itself as if it were a solid object or cut through bindings with a nonexistant blade.

Wonderlands tagline is "Were all a little mad here" and it tends to add a bleak spin to things.

I can honestly pivot from the punk part specifically. The only vibes I need to hit are rebellious, dead inside, more mature than teenager and some kind of standout fashion culture - so goth, punk and glam all work too.

I did find this, which pretty much nailed the vibes but very quickly realized it was slop. You'd think it'd be easy to follow that into just goth anime girls but basically none of them have the sort of aggressive energy I'm going for either.

It separates space into distinct layers, making all forms of interference between layers impossible, save for other high level forms of spatial magic. This prevents any attack from striking herself and her allies, as they aren't physically present to be attacked. Of course, the reverse is true as well, as it would shield even her enemies from harm at her allies' hands. Different layers of the domain have different skies overhead, with the layer she herself is in always having a blazingly bright sun without a cloud in sight.

Of course, in practice his idealistic power can be used rather unfairly in team battles, letting her divide and conquer enemy forces by trapping just some of them on the same layer as herself and her allies. It's otherwise useful for defending against enemy ultimates in a pinch, but that tends to burn more energy than it's worth.

One of the more public members of the old guard, she's grown from nameless desk jobs up to a respectable mid-ranking position. Naturally it's not without risk. She's butted heads against the corpos too many times and always took too hard of a stance. At some point they didn't care if she was a luminary with too much confidence or just a hard-headed fool, and so they sent a hitman. She lived to tell the tale without the use of her luminary powers. After all, she couldn't turn it into good press otherwise! "Even with my life on the line, I won't give a single inch when it comes to protecting this city!" she'd exclaim. She's become somewhat of a minor celebrity as a result, with some whispers even saying she should try her hand at an elected office before long.

I don't really consider her to be reliant on others much. She might be a team player during the day but she acts as a vigilante of sorts in the night. Her Bindings are her main weapon, which she can use for movement, defense, attacking, or all three if she pleases. She's also got Force for more oomph if she needs it, and Curse to pile on vulnerabilities and generally aide her combat.

Definitely. Lotte admires Brianne's strength and efficient means of being able to cut down her foes and not break a sweat while doing so. She might get compared to protagonists in Kurosawa films a lot for her use of iaido techniques, so bear with her for a while.
On a side note, the original build had twin implements with a saber she'd only wield while using dark arts, but I couldn't really make sense of how Psychic would be incorporated with quick slashes. In another world, she could've taken more from her senior in terms of fighting style.

Lots of claw swipes, alongside the agility to match it. Though she's Lightning, I like to frame her magic more as the storm/rain itself at least in theming to backup the Illusions in element. Rain illusions.
When it comes to her combat, other than trickery, she goes for an assassin-type approach. Like how thunder and lightning hides in the clouds during a storm. She uses the lightning for movement more than she would charged attacks like a certain bunny.

Louis had hope once. Once. Older than average for a magical teen, well in his adult years, he decided that victory was impossible. Years of corporate atrocities and losing teammates haunt him. He sees every magical girl and boy younger than him as just more fodder that will inevitably die within the next 5 years unless they're lucky, and he hates it. Former Old Guard and lone survivor of his closest friends after they were wiped out in a fight, he basically cut himself off from the rest of the veterans and engrossed himself in comparatively small-time work. Mostly focuses on his high-ranking corporate position and tries to help with what the younger or generally weaker magical fighters have trouble with, if he can. Acts as a support-type backliner who tries to look after everyone and gives intel and buffs.
Carries a lot of resentment towards the strongest of his kind like the Myrmidons and the Goddesses, thinks the former aren't doing enough to prevent the younger members from dying and thinks the latter are to blame for setting them up for this garbage in the first place. Ultimately believes that the Dark can at most be slowed, and has essentially already won. They're just going through the motions.

Can't tell you the amount of times Ive felt the same. I've had an idea for a character in my head from a CYOA that I've never been able use cause there won't ever be a run for it again, and while using it in a different setting is possible it just wouldn't feel right. For some other characters though unless someone else begins a trend of bringing characters back I'll keep them clean and safe in the premium top shelf of my mind.

Kore/Viscera is mostly focused on making minions with Bio-Shifting and Flora, and is a relatively new Luminary. As a result she's got fewer 'proper' spells than most and is just instinctively using the schools she has talent in. I'll make a proper rentry of some of her monsters after a few writefags, but some of her more notable spells include:

Ping: A passive Sonic spell, acting as a form of echolocation. If something is making noise she can sense its rough spatial position within several hundred feet. Great for detecting living things since they make so many noises (footsteps, breathing, heartbeats, etc). Costs so little its basically free, but she can dump in mana to boost the range or release a soundwave that bounces off of the surroundings and gives her a more detailed map.

Brambles: High-level Flora spell that covers a massive area in thick brambles and thorny roots. She can choose to make these toxic or not, and it basically forces the fight into the air - or at the very least makes the opponent devote resources to clearing an area for themselves. Thankfully they die and begin to rot after a few hours, otherwise they'd be a huge nuisance.

Spore Pustules: Closer to an item than a spell. She can grow small pods that function like gas grenades, releasing a cloud of spores when striking a surface hard enough. These spores can have a wide number of effects, from just concealing an area, to an irritant or even knocking enemies unconscious. She makes some minions who grow these pods on their hide/chitin, acting as a form of reactive armor that bursts when struck.

In combat she mostly relies on her minions, using Flora for AoE and battlefield control and Spirit for support. In bigger battles, she'll just burrow inside a kaiju like a meat-mecha, using them as a mobile bunker to cast spells out of and support her army, and bio-shifting them mid fight. Fighting solo is kind of a last resort, only done when trying to escape or caught by surprise.

She probably cribs Saitamas style by just calling them stuff like Consecutive Slashes, Brutal Series Slash, Agile Series Evasion, Her ultimate is basically just Omnidirectional Brutal Slashes
I don't think she would say names anymore unless she was trying to explain something to a rookie or pushed to frenzy mode.

She's meant to be very simple on her magical use so her aspected moves are things like Hidden Slash (Time freezing an attack until an opponent steps into it) Iaijutsu (where she just draws her blade instantly to attack using time/space) and stuff like that.

More-or-less just a 40k tech priest. I try to stay at range and blast foes with sci-fi energy weapons while using bio-mechanical minions and cybernetic tentacles to keep away or hold down threats. Curses are basically machine spirits I know there's a Summoning power, but Curses seemed more useful and I use them to buff the functionality of my inventions. Plus I can provide equipment, logistical, and tactical support to m allies whenever I'm not directly in a fight.

Lotte's prepared spell list is rather small with straight forward utility, most of them named after some sort of reference. The problem is that I can't really think of some right now, but I'd like to do a spell list like the others eventually. A lot of her moves happen to be lightning enhanced attacks, like the aforementioned Electric God Fist being a combination of magical electricity and physical force to do some sort of hybrid damage. There is a pretty dumb idea of a special move only accessible in her second form called Suicide Word where she does a LTG and tells her opponents to kill themselves with thunder ringing in the background.
I'm actually more interested in how she'd fare against some of the moves answered here since she'd likely be the type to spar even if she loses as a form of learning experience, and she's going to lose a lot given that she's missing her other speciality school compared to the other cast. For example, >>96225197 Boomo's is also straightforward yet lacks the flexibility in strategy, especially in scenarios where you don't want to burn down a whole city block. Kore on the other hand >>96225367 is going to be a challenge just based on her fighting style alone. Deborah is basically the epitome of zero finesse or subtlelty, all power. She primarily hyperfocuses on a combination of Sound and Curse to either buff up her own side, cripple the other, or a little bit of both. You can usually tell what she's trying to do as her magic is directly died to the pitch, tone and feel of what she's playing - more literally with her Sound as she switches between fast-paced, low-power notes or slow, brutal riffs, her song basically betrays exactly what her magic is going to do. After looking back on it I'll probably end up swapping her perks to Quick, Overcharge and Reserves to represent a sort of raw power style that, while very impressive, isn't very adaptable or precise and has plenty of weaknesses.

On that topic, she doesn't really have any mystical components to her spells like hand-signs or words, but at the same time is always using her instruments to fill in for that. The exception is in her Celerity and Physicality, where she's just faster, stronger and tougher than most Luminaries but there's little complexity to it (no 'forms,' or 'tiers,' or martial arts techniques, just trying harder).

The idea of this build is utilizing the ambiguity of curses and amplifying its power, while also being highly specialized by crafting a grimoir for specific scenarios. With twin implements I can vary the power and number of spells written in the grimoir and amplified by charm, which is bound to the target. Psychic and pact mastery are the vectors for damage. Pact with light spirits let me squeeze by using a lot of dark spells.

Laurel Perkins is a novice who's only recently become a Luminary. She's keen about this new world she's been let into, and this excitement has easily bled into her newly minted public persona, making her more confident and outgoing - a complete 180 from her usual shy demeanor.

Raised by her grandfather for as long as she can remember, Laurel's spent her life around the docks helping where she could but never allowed onto any of the fishing vessels. Laurel blames the corporations for the backbreaking work the good people in her life have endured for little in return. Such that Luminous Knights rhetoric easily drew her in even if the harsh nature of the faction hasn't hit just yet.

One of Laurel's earliest memories was being taken to see figure skaters for her birthday, watching them glide across the ice felt like pure magic. A dream she unfortunately couldn't pursue given her circumstances. Which has clearly influenced her magic. She chose Urist as her patron because it made juggling her duties, studies, and helping Grandpa way easier. Right now, she's searching for someone experienced enough to show her the ropes.

It's good to see another newbie build to put into the grinder. Since her outgoing persona comes from being a luminary, does that mean she goes back to being shy once she transforms back, or does that confidence bleed out to her regular life?

On a side note, gauntlets seem to be a popular implement, followed by blade or charms. Is it really that good compared to other implements, or is it due to physicality synergy?

We do have two staffs, but zero wands. And charms are at three for obvious reasons.

I guess it makes sense. The other implements aren't necessarily bad, but niche. Like blunt is only really useful against barriers, but loses out of spell-infused attacks. Both charms and gauntlets' niches are pretty wide, or lean into their specific playstyle, while blade is a good generalist while slotting into a common weapon theme. Charms can be nerfed by their limited range, but no one really thinks about how far they can throw their implements when it comes to actual writing. I do like how some use implements based on thematic or aesthetic reasons, such as using gauntlets as a stand in for cat claws, or the two blade + shield combos.

I can't fault anons for focusing on mechanics but it's always cooler when builds take options for themes/aesthetics, yeah. That being said, I think pretty much all of the implements are really good if given a fair shot and could easily see them having strengths and weaknesses when writing.

Another thing to note is that builds have to be independent for both in-universe and meta reasons. Grouping up isn't very encouraged due to losing out on XP, and we can't really be sure if someone will still be active after a while. This means that more supportive or vulnerable implements like instruments become less popular to use mechanically. I do somewhat regret going with gauntlets with mine because tools sound really fun to write for with the right school combo.

At the moment I'm not particularly sure, but I would like to lay some groundwork on what Jane and Deborah do to help out the new Luminaries and what happened to them when they were fresh. I'd like to imagine her as one of the more powerful veterans but on her way downwards rather than upwards due to her issues as well - she was originally slated to be a bossfight for some of the younger Luminaries to slap sense into, and that might still happen, but there's more I can do with her now that I think about it.

I can imagine 3 possibilities right now


1. Jane was originally part of Calamity but grew more and more disillusioned with their methods, thinking they were just perpetuating the same war between Light and Dark when what she truly wanted was to permanently destroy the evil that took their friend away. She left to the corporate machine, but still tries to keep contact with Deborah to warn her of any dangerous agents near her upcoming concerts
2. Jane works as Deborah's booking agent while juggling her dozen other jobs. The talent agency she works for today was her first target when she joined the corporate luminaries, so it's one of the few clean companies in the city
3. The same end result as 1 but there was no rockstar Jane period. They had their disagreements right after losing their squad mate, and broke off to deal with their grief in their own ways. Jane will still try to contact her in present day, but more awkwardly and professionally

Very much this, yes, probably due to Deborah being fundamentally opposed to the kind of methods you'd need to infiltrate the corporations. I imagine they're still close enough to agree on and work together on many things but often argue.

Originally she was the secret Luminary behind a string of serial murders of corporates. This was when she was in a much different position narratively, but the idea that she's becoming problematic for the Luminaries has stayed.

While plot can arrive organically, there's a lot of conversations/debates to be had with other Old Guard, primarily her as an inciting, argumentative figure, and potentially some well-meaning but poorly executed mentorship with the new generation.

There's room for slice of life as well, if anyone decides to spend any time with what essentially amounts to a travelling rockstar and her ever-changing band, or any of the media builds interviewing her.

Probably also Lotte, but she's taking Brianne as a mentor and it would form a weird mentorship chain. I think Deborah would make sense as Laurel's mentor due to her belief in freedom and self expression that seems to be a part of Laurel's story. Plus, there's a big difference in how they utilize their magic, which could have her try to replicate Deborah early on, but grow into her elegant and skater-like style eventually as she becomes more independent. If we're going with having the same schools, Gerard has Aero, while just about everyone has some level of celerity.
