Thread question: Are you following the recent updates in text templating, or are you sticking with classic templating? (e.g. "this creature" instead of the name of the card.)

Koh the Face Stealer
md5: facb436dda96b7bd99d90189bf8e9837๐Ÿ”
can I get some feedback on the wording of the effect?

the flavor idea is that if any creature activates or triggers, it is showing emotion and therefore gets its face stolen, and koh gets to use their abilities

mechanically its probably too telegraphed unless flashed somehow, or maybe it needs some kind of support where you can forcibly activate enemy creatures

They're not so easy to batch in this specific kind of effect.
Probably something like,

Jesus I was waiting for a thread like this.

I was spitballing an idea for a set, and I realized I was doing this whole thing wrong: Is it a waste of time to have a whole mechanic of Mutate cards and Human creatures and a mechanic that allows Human creatures to lose the Human creature type, when I could just use Emerge creatures instead and not deal with a middleman mechanic complicating things?

The only thing is that I had the human creatures usually have activated abilities that would be maintained on a Mutate stack.

Unfortunately, solving design issues like this is something WotC is fanatically averse to lmao.

Sounds good though. Champion is another option, though less flexible.

So like on an abstract level Emerge conveys similar concepts that I want to convey, and is pretty effortless to implement. You just need creatures on your board, and to decide whether you want sac one to cast something in your hand.

But I still have an itch for a mutated creature keeping activated abilities.

Youโ€™re onto something with Champion, I could just add a line of rules text that it has the activated abilities of the exiled creature. It feels wrong flavor wise but I might be able to live with that.

Iโ€™m just realizing how stupid it feels to tack a brightness counter ability on shit just to enable the mutate cards to be played as I intended.

Iโ€™m not defending this particular card, but itโ€™s an example of an ability that has a better payoff when mutated into something with a bigger stat line.

Exile-Emerge and Champion fill a similar design space. Though, Emerge is also more flexible as it allows for casting it without a "tribute"

I always advocate not copping out and having your designs stand on their own, without needing back-up crutches. Neutering your own design space due via whataboutism sucks. Just do the purest form of your design, and make it work.

Yes. I tried to copy the wording on one card, I forget exactly which one, but I donโ€™t believe itโ€™s oracle text was changed to โ€œfight.โ€ I donโ€™t remember why. I copied what I could to try and format it for Delirium.

I might commit to Imprint instead. I can gain the advantage of defining characteristics based on the exiled card, without the extra baggage of trying to subvert the limitations of Mutate.

Iโ€™m wondering if I should make the exile trigger not be a โ€œmayโ€ ability, but โ€œexile another creature you control.โ€ Or maybe Iโ€™ll just save that for special occasions.

The rules change where face-down cards were no longer basic 2/2 creatures was one of the worst rules changes of all time.

Other than that, it's a fine effect. A good way to make "tokens" without them being free value.

This is an insanely good rate. 2 mana for a 1/1 (soon to be a 2/2), another 1/1 that flies, and at minimum 2 free damage.

>>96259682
This on the other hand I would probably never play since it gets progressively more difficult to crew, and soon basically impossible. If you only have a couple creatures, adding an additional 1/1 won't make much a difference. And if you have a big creature, you're not gonna wanna waste it crewing this thing.
