Going full Sorcerer would make the most sense. You can hide the fact by not using meta-magic around Wizards.
If you take a level in Wizard, then your guy isn't pretending anymore and that'll undercut your story.
For background, Sage or Charlatan would work.

I don't know what benefit of pretending to be wizard your character is after. There isn't much a Wizard can do that a Sorcerer can't.

Definitely not mechanically the same, what with the lack of classes, the fatigue system, the dice pools, the edge points, etc.
Definitely doesn't have the same fluff, considering humans, dwarfs, elves, trolls and orcs are part of the "metahumanity" umbrella due to how they all still interbreed with one another and thus not capable of producing hybrids like in D&D due to not being separate species

D&D was never a game, it was always a poorly executed means to get characters from flavor-of-the-era to come together, cross-fic style, and hop dimensions while saving princesses and slaying dragons.
And when I say "poorly executed", I mean insofar that the abilities, skills, and class systems don't facilitate the more freeform character roleplay that was encouraged.
At best, D&D has always been a collaborative writing tool, with no game to speak of in its pages.

A wizard is schooled in magic while a sorcerer just has it inherently. A wizard is an educated man who has a wider breadth of knowledge and probably a higher social status (more knowledge skills instead of stuff like survival and higher starting wealth). The guy could be walking around telling people that he graduated from a magic school or was tutored by a famous wizard to impress them, while in reality he is some hobo who can't tell the difference between dweomer and a duergar and just shoots random shit from his hands. Alright so I want to play this character, he's just a male fighter/assassin/rogue/some shit, but his gimmick is that he can control a dagger with his mind, basically he has a flying dagger that acts like a separate weapon and he can always enter any place where weapons aren't allowed because the dagger just sneaks above the guard or something and maybe he actually has more daggers, let's say 2 daggers to fight with and 2 to backstab, he can just make daggers float around him and fight people while he chills, maybe every dagger has a special property or something maybe it's just one dagger that multiplies magically, but they shouldn't be detectable maybe i should play this in a cyberpunk setting instead and it's not daggers it's bullets? I need help with the setting and the actual build and any comments & critiques, it sounds like an epic idea to me I just need to bring it to reality.

I've once had the opposite character in my campaign - a wizard pretending to be a sorcerer. Sorcerers in my setting are the higher class of a spellcaster, who form the backbone of magical organizations and form the noble houses. Wizards are considered the lesser kind.
The character in question was born to a sorcerer family, but was born without the magical spark. She was taught wizardry to hide the fact she was born without magic and given a magic ring that simulates draconic scales on her body, because her birth is the evidence of her house's degeneration and loss of the connection with their progenitor.

She was one of the table's favorite NPCs, and had a lot of drama with the party's own wizard.

>There is no in-universe difference between sorcerers and wizards.
Of course there is in the system OP indicates, the mechanics say that wizards have spellbooks they can fill as they please from their access to on-list writings while sorcerers have a fixed but internal set of spells.

Fascinating.

In 3e (and PF1e), Wizards and Sorcerers had slots that worked in a completely different way, both made use of metamagic, and each had advantages and disadvantages on it (PF1e fixed a minor but annoying thing with Quickened).

Then 4e decided that that's too much for the design team to handle and balance so they designed a game with an incredibly limited scope, and people got mad.

So wizard made 5e, cosmetically closer to 3e, but in which only the Sorcerer is the "metamagic guy" and such a limited design HAS BEEN SOLD TO YOU RETARDS AS A FEATURE.

Hilarious.

Not really. In 3.x, Sorcerers were just shittier wizards who had spontaneous spellcasting. That's not totally differently. That's the same shit.

Spontaneous, Prepared etc can all do metamagic in 3e tho, and will adapt to it differently.
5e limited the options and you retards clap.

If a Sorcerer is really broke, then they won't really have money for a fancy spellbook and nice robes and all of the other trappings that might be involved in selling the illusion.

If anything, it'd be a lot cheaper to pretend to be a priest of whatever god is most closely related to your Sorcerer powers. Nobody questions why some traveling priest might be poor.
But really, why pretend to be anything? Sorcerers are typically charismatic, and nothing mandates that they make full use of their talents at all times.
A Sorcerer who is worried about being judged for being a Sorcerer shouldn't be putting themselves in a line of work where they'll be regularly using magic. Instead of pretending to be a Wizard and risking a real Wizard calling you out, just work at a tavern or with a trade caravan and then you don't need to live a lie.

Even in your shit setting, it wouldn't make a difference, because in practice, wizard magic and sorcerer magic is basically the same. Their spells come from the same list. It would probably be even easier for a sorcerer to masquerade as a wizard in a setting like that, because most people would be too ignorant to even know there was a difference, let alone be able to recognize it.

No dude I just want to play the daggerer, imagine if you for example walked down a dark alley at night and you got mugged and you held your hands up BUT at the same time there was a flying dagger behind the mugger and you'd just control it to stab him for example tell me it's not a fucking epic concept, I'm trying to decide if one dagger is good or if it should be multiple, because the kicker is you're not a magical Andy you're just a bloke, maybe it's psychokinesis or whatever, you're not this guy in robes that can't pass the D&D TSA equivalent you just go and it's fine and the dagger will come at some later time maybe you have a slot in your armor or body where you can hide it or something like that when it flies back to you so that you always appear unarmed.

Have you considered yah know, you're a sorcerer pretending to be a wizard?

Fun class idea I had for SW5e (I am in a game with some diehard star wars fans) was a roboticist, but that got declined, so I'm doing a multiclass scholar/engineer type thing that gets to rapid fire with their blaster using critical analysis, allowing them to use Int for their accuracy roll on targeted enemies off a level 3 spell for 2 shots per turn, plus I get another one off the detective subclass, plus I get other shenanigans that I can do things with. I've turned the character into an ex CIS droid tech who is now a conspiracy theorist. GM already said they're running with some of the stuff I said as being true. There's a long list of stuff I said that made the diehards cringe, and I'm doing it intentionally to make them cringe. Surprisingly, I am generally the most on topic and to the point character in the game, unless nothing is happening.

They're easily accessible to anyone familiar with D&D, but with enough changes to how certain mechanics work to circumvent a lot of the problems D&D has. SWN is free (not sure about WWN) so I'd recommend giving it a look at least.

You are not very helpful. Imagine you're in a tavern chilling and playing cards and someone enters the door and starts shooting crossbows at you but your dagger was already outside the door because you put it on guard mode and he just backstabs the guy? Maybe there is a pocket dimension that it goes to.

Ok so this is basically off the top of my head his name is Eight Knives Dingo and he's named that because he has eight knives, he has two knives on his belt, two knives on his back, and two knives in his boots. HOWEVER the point is that all eight knives are actually decoys, obviously he can fight with them but the real reason for so many knives is that he can always take off his knives whenever there is some security and then they know he has exactly eight knives, imagine the scene he goes through palace security and they do the "and your other knife" bit eight times until he's actually disarmed, but little do they know that the knives that they were looking for will always be there regardless then his party goes to have dinner with the king and suddenly there's a knife at the king's throat out of nowhere when he's eating a turkey leg or some shit on the other side of the table they don't even know it's him tell me this is not the most epic concept?
