I love Thalia. I wish I could kiss her but I can't and never will. I love to imagine her buttermilk hair shining in the moonlight, I wish I could keep watch with her from the stone parapets of Thraben and see her bluish eyes reflecting little orange pinpricks of torchlight. Even after 3 years I still love her, part of me does. I don't know what it is. Maybe just an idea. My girlfriend left me because I couldn't get hard for her. Is probably have the same problem if I married Thalia. I am utterly worthless scum. I had my testosterone measured and it was only 600. I'm in shape but still skinny and weak. So not really in shape. I am too weak to even die for Thalia as cannon fodder to keep the beautiful guardian of Thraben alive. Sometimes I imagine her ramming her rapier up to its beautiful basket hilt into my scrawny chest and purging my worthless existence from this world. I don't feel like that other times, but when I think of her true beauty and purity and perfection and virtue, I cant help feeling utterly worthless by comparison. Lost my job and maybe I will just play Magic til the money runs out. In some ways it hurts too much to play a deck with Thalia in it.... In other ways it is just the sort of pain that I need.

So I recently got into commander by playing some precons, and I had a lot of fun. I was thinking of trying to make my own deck and stick to a theme while doing it. My friend said going tribal is an easy way to start (e.g. all goblins with Krenko as commander), but some guy at our LGS who we were playing with said that's bad since tribal sucks and doesn't teach you how to build. What should I do?

Tribal is an excellent way to deck build because it forces limitations and creative thinking on you while you learn to deck build, as opposed to just making a good stuff slop pile with budget X/Y/Z. That's why you avoid the pushed races when you make your first deck(s) because it's too piss easy to build busted shit with elves/goblins/dragons/zombies/wizards/etc.

My friends and I want to do another deck exchange and we need to exchange names soon, but we are still trying to pick a restriction. Last year we did where everyone had to build partners, it turned out really well.

What would be another fun restriction? One thing I was thinking was we'd randomly pick a popular tribe, like humans or goblins or something, and we'd have to build that. If any anons have an idea I'd love to hear it.

well it's because the rules of the card are tied very closely to the base mechanics so to explain how the card works one would have to explain all the basic mechanics like the stack. in all simplicity, eldrazi sometimes have these cast triggers that go on the stack at the same time they are, that is before resolving anything. they can then copy those by paying CC. if they have flash, they can respond to their own spells at instant speed by putting more stuff on the stack and THEN copy all that shit. that's it

There was a time where my friends were way more into edh than they are now and I got into the habit of buying every set of precons when they came out because they would come to me to buy them. I would keep the leftovers and sell them once they went up in price. I freely admit that I'm not the best at remembering all the rules to things by any means but I always figured priority made a fair amount of sense for simplification. You want to do X so you cast it, see if it resolves, if it does, you move on to Y and repeat the process/ it doesn't resolve due to player interaction and you see if you want to deal with that issue. So if you're casting a board wipe that you want to be asymmetrical, you put on protection first, then nuke the place, you can't nuke the place then put protection on, that doesn't make sense, and everybody gets a chance to deal with one problem at a time if they want to interact with every individual part of the turn. Say I have a creature on the field, and my opponents casts Path to Exile, I then respond with Cloudscape. Would the proper order of the stack go as follows?
1. Path to Exile targets for cost, 2. Cloudscape is casted and resolved. 3. Any ETB trigger, and if Elesh is on the field, her ability would also trigger. 4. Those steps would resolve, then Path of Exile would fail to resolve, due to the target leaving the field, the creature it originally targeted being a new creature in the state of the game.

The way it works at my place is
>you pay $12
>you automatically guarantee yourself two boosters of your choice, win or lose
>4 player pods
>if you beat your pod, you go into the winners' pod and get another 2 boosters
>winners' pod players get 1 booster per opponent they knock out
What this means is you never face an opponent you met previously, which keeps the element of surprise on your side (unless someone is a salty loser and spoils it).

NTA, you are correct, but it's interesting in regard to the EoE commander set. I follow each set release, and i've never seen any EDH set with so few value in it. The most expensive card is a $7 multi reprinted staple, and beside a dozen cards worth 3 or so bux, everything is in the $1 range.

Now the prerelease is behind us, no store will want to mass open or even approach this set with a 10-ft pole. On top of EoE being released in the dead middle of summer holidays between two majors UB sets who sucked up all the attention.
Supply for singles will dry up fast if a staple from the new cards emerge. Eventually there is always a winner or 2 balancing the value for each crappy set, even in lost Ixalan, that's how mtg economics work. With EoE singles price being so low and only 20 non-reprints (almost half being lands), you have good odds at identifying the future "cash printer" from the set and make a x5-x8 out of it.

I figured as much, its just a layover from Yugioh, where it is something we say. On a meta-level, it is technically not a cost, but is easier to say then activation procedure and resolved at the same time as the cost.

Now on another subtle note, are there any instances or effects that resolve where you can choose "targets" but do not specify as so. The only reason I bring this up is due to Hexproof preventing targeting. For this example, I will use the example of an opponent with just a Segarda in play.

Scenario 1: "Take control of target creature." would be an invalid target and would be unable to activate due to not being a legal target.

Scenario 2: "Take control of a target opponents creature." Would resolve due to targeting the player, and not the creature.

Scenario 3: "Take control of a creature." Now, I am unsure if Magic has any effects worded as such, but if such an effect did exist where the word "target" was not specified, it would resolve, as hexproof only stops the creature from being targeted outright. I only specify these semantics out of curiosity. I guess ultimately, are there any cards in this game that effecitvly "target," but do not use the word "target," as boardwipes kill hexproof creatures.
