I've told you before and I'll say it again. This is about the IP becoming public domain in short order. This was talked about aplenty when that Gollum video game came out - which was shat out ASAP because the value of IP rights dwindles as the public domain date approaches. The companies that buy IP licenses expect to re-sell them to someone else after they're done, so they want it used quick and dumped right away.

>They wanted to differentiate themselves from the movies
because one way to avoid YOUR treatment of a work becoming public domain is to make something DISTINCT. That way, you can go "hold up, we did black Gandalf first, that's an infringement on OUR rights" and claw that shit back. The controversy was the cherry on top, but it didn't really matter because the 1/1 One Ring lottery (pulled in Australia, sold to Post Malone for like $2.5mil) was what ended up really driving the sales (they nosedived after it was pulled).
I'm much more upset about what
>>96256424 points out. LOTR is all about the bloodlines and their inherent power. Aragorn is the rightful king BY BLOOD. They fucked the visuals for money instead of bothering with internal consistency.
In hindsight, it was a clear indication of how things were going to go with UB.
