Unless one of my players has a backstory mthat atters or the chronicle focuses on it, not much outside of classic "this is too ancient/foreign for you to read" mystery plot.
Yes, all Tremere plus any Mage worth its magic should know Latin. It is a classic for a reason and I might even relax Paradox a tad if they use Latin.

>How do you deal with languages in your games?
Normally. I'd prefer to see some Calligraphy if you took Asian languages, but it's not strictly necessary (your standing among the properly literate will suffer whenever your deficiency is revealed).
>How often does the language merit/linguistics ability comes up in your games?
Depends on location. Could be almost never in Britain or US games, unless you're playing a Tremere, or dealing with an ethnic gang (and then Torture or Interrogation should suffice) or outright essential if I run Mediterranean campaign or some other linguistic melting pot setting.
>And should all Tremere know Latin?
Naturally, though exceptions can exist. If you plan to have any dots in Thaumaturgy or Medicine I'd prefer to see Latin or Greek on your sheet, though. if you plan to dabble in alternative sorceries that weren't adapted into the Thaumaturgy proper corresponding ancient tongues and Culture, Hearth Wisdom or Theology Knowledge are also necessary.
You might be able to learn and cast a ritual without all that if you really want or plot depends on it, but there'd be a hefty experience and difficulty tax.

>>Thread Question:
>How do you deal with languages in your games?
I assume every PC knows their mother language + any language relevant to their backstory + the language used to communicate during the chronicle.
>How often does the language merit/linguistics ability comes up in your games?
Never used the language merit, I actively discourage players from wasting points in it unless it's relevant to the chronicle (i.e. all PCs are american/european and the chronicle takes place in the Middle East).
Linguistics on the other hand is something I like to make players roll when reading ancient texts, attempting to decipher certain codes or secret messages, or when trying to communicate with NPCs who don't speak their language.
>And should all Tremere know Latin?
Yes and so should most Mages.

The language merit is only ever used for its dice desu. The ST did try adding a languages skill that gave languages at a better ratio, but only half the coterie took it.
Academics 1 is also implied to give you a grasp of one of the old sciency languages, which the ST rolled with.
Everything else, a mix of enigma or empathy lets you get a general grasp of what the guy is saying, but beyond that you need to buy the language or find an interpreter.

We rarely use the extra languages mostly because it requires more forethought than our table usually gives the game and the fact that a modern game will mostly just allow people to use Google translate on relevant documents and longer interrogations.

Languages have been fairly relevant in some of our campaigns. We've had a few that were set locally and all characters just spoke English and maybe another language that was relevant to them, but we also had a globe-trotting Hunter the Vigil game in which all of our characters were from different countries. We eventually settled on English as our mutual language once my PC got tired of translating between the Mexican and the American. My character in particular spoke 12 languages by the end of the campaign between the Language and Multilingual merits, as well as his free native language of French.

The current game we're running is set in the medieval period, and since the PCs are from all over Europe we've once again settled on a lingua franca, this time being Latin. We all speak our native languages - Greek, Occitan, and Norse - proficiently and have at least enough Latin to get by.

The Guild provided financial support at best, Craftmasons were purged by batshit religious zealots (Cabal) and career criminal murderhobos (Ksirafai). Both of which eventually defected, but not before having a little civil war of their own.

Good part of the blame is on the Craftmasons themselves, as they grew even more elitist and conspicuous than traditions, and despite being the youngest of proto-technomancers relentlessly and obnoxiously tried to rewrite history to be be all end all of the proto-technocrats even before that.

Hidden Haven?

This ritual is said to have been developed by the Council of Twelve to hide their massive library within the Carpathian Mountains. The ritual is difficult to cast, and must target a building no bigger than a large house. Once enacted, the building becomes generally unnoticeable; even individuals who know it exists do not notice it, nor do they remember it when asked. During the ritual, the caster must specify a physical “key” (such as spinning twice in a circle, tapping one heel on the ground three times, and then saying “Vitae Incorpora”). Any individual within 100 yards/meters of the building who performs this physical key correctly will penetrate the ritual and be able to see and locate the building without difficulty.

System: The caster must surround the building, and mark all corners, doorways, and windowsills with chalk made of owl-feather ash. The ritual takes a full night to cast, and requires the caster to sacrifice a permanent point of Willpower. Those who wish to find the building without knowing the proper physical key must approach within 100 yards/meters of the structure’s location and make a successful Intelligence + Occult roll (difficulty 9) each time they wish to see through this ritual’s protection.

Hidden Haven’s effects last for one year.

Dark Age - all the time, most extreme case being group of 5 where no three characters shared common language and no two were on the same Road, so any coordinated effort required game of telephone and people were constantly trying to manipulate each other by selectively choosing which part of information to relay and which to withold. vs vampires a flamethrowing drone is always a valid choice because Rotschreck
gun platform ground-drone may work as a trap of sorts - camping behind corner ready to open fire on detected motion, working without operator supervision (except when repositioning)
bombs are good when you have enough pilots, material is cheaper than people, and you don't care about collateral damage
oh and when your remote piloting is not getting interfered with - a consideration for future wars will be man-portable signal jammers with decent range vs drones capable of autonomous "last mile" targeting when they lose connection to operator

FIFY. For the most part.
Guide to Camarilla is... kinda good buy cause original book got cancelled, and it's the useful one of the three.
Time of Thin Blood is pretty good and useful, for thin bloods, dhampirs and the encroaching apocalypse stuff even if many people hate it for antediluvian bit.
Blood Magic is very hit and miss for many reasons, but is alright for an overview and is MUCH better than subsequent sorcery books.
Players Guide to Low/High Clans and Revised Storytellers Companion are also alright for an overview if you're running Revised Dark Ages Vampire, but otherwise original Dark Age books are better.

While useful for someone completely ignorant, for the most part that's just generic elitist etiquette and common sense policies. Nothing of substance, as opposed to Sabbat, Tremere (which essentially the same stuff with magic, less pretentiousness and more emphasis on united front) or some Dark Age supplements.

Original Venture book is on the weaker side, granted. Probably the weakest of original clanbooks, it doesn't even have the original tone going for it.

In either case, if one's going to read the books, I strongly advice to read the originals first. Then read revised, and note what's lacking despite higher page count and what's improved, then form one's own opinion.

Lucifer is essentially playing god and has a hand in the various abrahamic churches as a means of getting humanity to follow his doctrine while masquerading a big G.

He's also written what I consider some of the worst books in WoD. I know other games have some really fucked up shit, like all those depraved modules for Lamentations of the Flame Princess, but those are quite creative in comparison to Brucato's dry and uninspired magical realm bullshit.
So yeah, he's generally a bad writer and often behind the worst decisions in the Mage line, both lorewise and mechanically. He's also this creepy sex addicted fuck. Imagine having That Guy being a horny BDSM rave-rat who thinks he's an intellectual and doesn't just try to steer the game into ERP every scene, but is actively trying to sleep with all the girls at the table. Although I do think you can have a ''cleaner'' appearence since you're dead and not subject to newer zits, and also with immortality you may develop some sense of fashion and social fashion.

Storyteller's Vault is rather open to a lot more than GW and definitely more than Nintendo. Nintendo would freak out if you put tits and p0n0s in Mario 64 trade dress, but STV does not, mostly.

You can't make whole new games for their stuff but you can make almost any supplement you want for established games. So if you wanted to make a de facto Overfiend crossover with WoD, CoD, or Exalted, you're technically allowed to do that, but it has to be labeled Black Dog, with Black Dog trade dress, which may be soft-locked out because the only Black Dog trade dress they have is for V:tM.

The WoD5 Storyteller's Vault, however, has much more restrictive guidelines. You can't make 18+ material for those. Just about anything else in the empty void of WoD5, however, is permissible.

Good question. Ravnos likely because his blowout already occurred before, more so as it changed antediluvians from merely individuals with one special power to natural disasters.

Ventrue... well, people at the helm decided he's been dead all along, and as not being flaky enough Gehenna writers, largely disdainful of all things seven, and preferring flakier clans, were not inclined to bring him back.

I think Ventrue being undisputed sovereign of vampire kind also played the part, the political landscape of Vampire world would've been quite a bit more different if he was still around, even dormant, so Gehenna writers had to keep him dead.

OTOH writers of shoddier side-line supplements were keen on inserting methuselah sue after methuselah sue, so they wholly ignored the whole "supposed to be dead" thing, wilfully or ignorantly.

The >ST can have all kinds of fun. He likely won't, much less the players. In TTRPG's you have to account for players not being retards and properly roleplaying their characters. Now imagine throwing time shenanigans into the mix unilaterally, since most likely only one in the party will have Temporis. You'll have players whining their actions didn't count, getting killed, trying to metagame themselves out of harm's way or at some point just refusing to re-roleplay something their characters said/did because someone turned back time. Also, the power will very, very likely used incorrectly together with very bad ideas who will end up fucking things over.

And that's not addressing the worst issue: it's also highly likely this power will be used in some sort of PvP, and the spite and grudge of going against a chronomancer will spiral from there.

they mention the region being a surprisingly heavily fought of part of the sect war a few times so there is a lot of sabbat up there fighting with a union of barely camarilla ventrue princes who went there all the way in the 13th century

but tzimisce are a really bad fit for that region, wolves of the sea mentions that they don't stay asleep during the summer white nights and that most vampires have to move south, which can be problematic when you have the tzimisce clan weakness

still that would give the region: gangrel, tzimisce, malkavian and toreador as natives which is a fairly unqiue combination

no in the same book he is unable to control douglas netchurch and has to chase him with living minions ala crossed
malkav also can't take over player characters fully while the eldest can, they are just lower on his list compared to saulot, tremere and methusulah of his clan(s) because he is oh so weakened by pure chance (gehenna hit him at a bad moment where he wasn't fully a vampire and not fully out of vampirism either) so the strenght of his body actually matters a little!

Thats not an alternative rule nor is it revenant exclusive. All ghouls and ghoul subtypes(revenants, dhampirs, etc) increase in max bp with each century of age.

This has weird implications for post 2000's WoD. Metaplot-wise, gehenna not happening means the eldest had time to complete the full path of metamorphosis and achieve azhi dahaka. He should already be a sentient ecosystem beneath NYC and mass-producing antediluvian vitae...

I think one of the books mentions that archmage techocrats basically become a ''ghost in the machine'' and the border between mage and focus becomes blurred to the point of fusing together. No, no you can't.
Infernal Deal aren't negotiable unless we're talking demon lords and yama kings, neither of which could ever be bound as a mage's servant.
Pact levels with normal demons have very specific requirements outside the demons control, your never getting more arcana than tormeent + taints + pact, and you're not getting more fomori powers than your taints, autonomy and xp allow.
Actually, there's one specific case where I'm wrong, pre-20th spectre pacts let you get some powers on the spectres dime. You could force the spectre to give you it's entire permanent autonomy score and net yourself an absurd effective willpower rating.
