And yes, these entities were placholders for the fear of the other and the unkown.
That's a good thing.
You want your fantasy game to elicit a fear of the other, of the different, to bring things that "almost look human" but they are not, that they can be completely alien or outright evil, beyond logic. That you can talk and negotiate with them but they still will have an alien nature.
That's a good thing, that's fantasy.
