He's right though. It blew my mind people online are so hooked on this concept when traditionally nobody gave a fuck even when you're killing other humans like bandits and such in droves. It used to be people inherently just ran the idea of, it's okay to kill anything as long as they attack you. The idea you need a race specifically spelled out as evil with a glowing neon sign above their heads saying evil, in order to have permission to kill them is weird to me.

Because otherwise certain players get distracted wondering if maybe the orc marauders are raiding villages due to purely economic circumstances. It's partly players themselves trying to dissociate from the murderhobo image by trying to have more scruples about killing.

Outliers don't negate the statistical trend.
Every culture had some variation of "orc".
Some quasi-humanoid entity that was mischeviously dangerous if not outright evil.
And yes, these entities were placholders for the fear of the other and the unkown.
That's a good thing.
You want your fantasy game to elicit a fear of the other, of the different, to bring things that "almost look human" but they are not, that they can be completely alien or outright evil, beyond logic. That you can talk and negotiate with them but they still will have an alien nature.

It's the outcome of demanding high levels of nuance in the environment while adhering to a redditized morality which demands fake moral simplicity. It's not ok for Lawful Good people to execute bandits because the bandits didn't truly mean it and had a harsh childhood, so you must sympathize and show mercy somehow, so a new race it's ok to beat up must be invented or combat is impossible.
