I feel this. They were some of the first models I ever painted and by the time I got done with A unit of Chainrasps and Glaivewraiths I was sick of them. It took me like a year to actually finish painting Reikenor and at the end I really phoned him in.
If I were to even paint them again I'd have to think of a new scheme.

The jade is base Caliban green, layer up the bigger streaks with Kabalite green until they're visible. Then I mixed in I think Temple Guard blue in with the Kabalite in a couple of different quantities until I felt the smallest lines were bright enough. I also did a bit of stippling.
For comparison this is a Skink Alpha I did a couple years ago when I last painted lizards. I actually couldn't find the old GW video that I followed for the jade so I just found a picture of jade I liked and tried to follow it.

Interesting, thank you for the info. It looks like it could be a tad too big to use for a Mannfred/Neferata proxy, which is a shame because I've been brainstorming a bunch of neat conversion ideas. It would do fine as a zombie dragon if I acquire some graveyard scenery to litter the base with. It would have been perfect if james didn't have to keep dicking with base sizes.

I don’t think the design itself is racist in a vacuum, but it is when the character’s main deal is that he’s mixed. He’s specifically described in the first novel as kind of lithe and not particuarly tall, inheriting that and his skin color from his reclaimed mother, but doing his hair and moustache up in azyrite military style. Then the new design makes him a big muscular black man with dreads, and in that one Hammer and Bolter episode he’s also very quick to anger and very violent, the opposite of his personality everywhere else and just a straight racist caricature when combined with his new design.

I think it’s funny to take a character who’s evoking real world politics to introduce the concept of the reclaimed/azyrite divide to the audience (he’s got more esteemed azyrite pedigree than most people who call themselves azyrites in Excelsis, but percieved only as reclaimed because of his skin color) and then just straight up doing the exact thing with the character that the racist figures in the narrative do, by ignoring everything about him except his blackness. I don’t really give that much of a shit when he’s at least portrayed with the personality he has in the novels, like he does in dawnbringers and the shitter non-horth one in hammerhal, but GW is so lucky no one gives enough of a shit to watch hammer and bolter because this would be a controversy for other companies doing this in any other adaptation.

Anonymous No.96295195
>>96295075
Spoilers for 5th are going to show up like late 2026 as they start gearing up for the next edition because of the stupid 3 year cycle thing.

The vermindoom is the big 4e thing, the Skaven polluting leylines across the realms and then corrupting them all at once to launch massive invasions. Each battletome has different major events that’re a result of it related to the specific faction the tome is about, like barak-urbaz falling and it’s population escaping to become a nomadic fleet of skyships, or the Idoneth burning Cythai souls to awaken incarnates of the oceans etc. there’s a ton of big things like that, too many to cover in a 4chan post

I don't known much about SM but GW have always said they were an inspiration. 1E is definitely a little odd in its showcasing of Stormcast and the various Stormhosts, which might be more Space Marine centric but idk and it's probably a consequence of it being all they had to work with more than anything. 100s of Blue Liberators, 100s Red Liberators...

This doesn't even make sense to me, since sense 1.0 we have had plenty of black Azyrites (the excelsior warpriest has been painted black for a decade now), further reinforced by short stories like Bonereaper, where the Shyish city's Azyrite warpriest is also described as having 'dark skin.'
But suddenly for good boy points being black is a 'Reclaimed' thing?

The reclaimed around the coast of tusks where Excelsis is have a particualr type of black skin that’s inherently associated with the reclaimed because that’s what reclaimed from the area look like, this was a choice Nick horth obviously made to introduce the concept to the reader (because it was one of, if not the, first books set in a CoS and exploring what their culture is like), by rooting it in an understandable real world parallel, and I think both of these responses are really fucking stupid for not being able to understand that purposeful decision.

In another story they head further inland from Excelsis to a swamp town that supplies the city with its silksteel, and there the native reclaimed are pale skinned and vaguely Celtic, visually defined by their tattoos more than anything else. This is partially to show the audience that the reclaimed/azyrite divide is more than just skin color.

If you’ve never read the book to know that, why would you start getting mad about someone who very clearly has and is literally explaining the purpose of it in that narrative? Also you should read it, the Callis and toll series is actually great BL fiction.

I just said he had a particular type of dark skin in the op, the guy saying β€œhe wasn’t black” wasn’t saying he’s not literally African because it makes no sense to be saying that in response to me, he was saying he thought Callis was white.

>>96296677
> wasn’t black
> He had the same dark skin and slight, lithe frame of his mother, a legacy of the many generations his ancestors had spent scratching an existence from the ruthless plains and valleys of the Coast of Tusks.

His dad has a Germanic empire name because he’s an archtypical azyrite, you don’t get any description of him or that side of the family besides the name, but it’s fairly obvious from that he’s supposed to read as white. You don’t have to assume that and him being mixed with whatever you like still produces the same result, but it’s also really fucking obvious that the first reclaimed who’s showing off the idea to the audience being a mixed dude with dark skin, in a novel that highlights the way reclaimed are an underclass, is using the parallel to introduce the idea to the audience. I think you are genuinely stupid if you read that and assume that means I think all reclaimed are the same real world ethnicity, or that all azyrites are white or whatever, especially when I pointed out what other ghurish reclaimed look like in other stories from that book series

> Do you think azyrites have less blacks than other realms?

Is there something wrong with you that makes you not able to read what you’re responding to? His dark skin is what has people define him as reclaimed in Excelsis, because the reclaimed from the coast of tusks have that dark skin. In other cities, in other places, where the native reclaimed look different, his skin color doesn’t have people assume he’s reclaimed. This is shown off in that book series, and also really fucking obvious if you think about it for 2 seconds.

No, I understand perfectly, you on the other hand understand nothing:
if azyrites are also black, then the reclaimed being blacks is not something that can possibly serve as a characteristic that defines and separates them as reclaimed in opposition with the azyrites settling in excelsis
you want to have your cake and eat it too, but that's not how things work, if being black identifies some reclaimed as such, then it cannot be a trait in any significant number of azyrites

You've got to choose whether azyrites are multiethnic, or whether some reclaimed can be identified as such by being black.

Is there some American brainrot that defines β€œblack” as a specific thing rather than an umbrella term? Are you trying to say β€œblack” means β€œfrom Africa” so β€œDark skin from generations living on the savannah” in a fantasy world can’t be called black? This feels so weirdly obtuse as an objection.

> if azyrites are also black, then the reclaimed being blacks is not something that can possibly serve as a characteristic that defines and separates them as reclaimed in opposition with the azyrites settling in excelsis

I think this is something that falls apart the moment you consider this >>96296887 but also just seems to be disagreeing with the book and not me? Either way it’s not really a distinction that actually holds up in-universe anyway, another thing the book just has a character say, so it’s stupid to act like this means anything- azyrites are people descended from those that settled in azyr, which is anyone from anywhere because of the refugees in the age of chaos. There’s a recent story about reclaimed and azyrites who descend from the same original culture, those who refused to flee and those who survived in azyr, and how even though they are the same people fundamentally, the prejudices and dynamics of azyrites/reclaimed still exist between them.

The peoples from the coast of tusks share a particular skin color, so in Excelsis they view that skin color as a signifier of being reclaimed. Somewhere else in ghur, further away from the coast of tusks that Callis and toll visit, particular types of tattoo signify someone is reclaimed instead because that’s what the local cultures share as a trait. People in the living city would not assume Callis is a reclaimed because of his skin color, and would assume based on whatever their local cultures shared.

Callis even is an azyrite on his father’s side, it just doesn’t matter because his skin color marks him as reclaimed and that’s all people see him as. This is just what happens in the book

In the Soul Drinkers series the second book had an Inquisitor show up to hunt them down. Except midway through the book he realizes that his mission is a sham. He's this powerful, well-connected man who has supposedly reached the apex of Imperial Prestige. The big turning point is when he realizes just how many powerful people the Inquisition is formed of and how little the Soul Drinkers matter. A galaxy is at war and this is just one chapter among hundreds. This book almost has this moment and that's as good as it gets. She almost has a moment when she realizes that her empire is one speck of dust in Aqshy. And even then the plot serves to suck her off.

The characters are bland. The protagonist wins through everything she planned going exactly as she plans it. The antagonists simply exist to slow her down, never seriously injure or wound her. Many novels are this predictable, but very few are this boring about it. It's fun to watch Tahlia re-form her crusade, learn her lesson, and march on out. The only fun to be had here is reading the better book you get a tease of after this one. It is only enjoyable if you has a lobotomy and can't remember how the last book went.

It depends on your definition of soon
3-4 months? no chances
1-2 years? high chances

safe purchases are gorgers, scenery, thundertusk/stonehorn, scraplauncher/ironblaster and probably mournfangs
anything left in resin or metal is of course as good as dead or replaced
the original 6th ed plastics (gluttons, belchers, ironguts) are surely going to change, gnoblars too, but I'm not too sure GW will actually bother updating them, they might as well erase them as a unit altogether
the disappearance of the relatively recent plastic wight king on steed creates a dangerous precedent for the safety of plastic pity heroes like the tyrant, so I wouldn't count them as a safe purchase
models that were at some point an underworlds band have shaky ground for survival

currently there's a rumor that glittermaw might be getting a model

However expect 2026 at the earliest, rest of 2025 is chorfs, pity heroes and probably nurgle update around christmas. Guess we'll have to wait until the next roadmap drops for more solid info.
Like this anon >>96298958 said the beastclaw raider stuff will be fine, but the glutton/ironguts/leadbelcher kits are prime targets for refreshes, as are old characters. The destruction and death books both have sections about running mixed bindings and each archetype has a little bit about how they can end up in order ones. Destruction in particular even justifies it by saying sometimes people just end up bound together by waagh energy, particularly rowdy waaghs crackling with so much energy it burns through the waagh itself and leaves survivors with souls melted together, sometimes including people the waagh was fighting.

Normal soulbound are just people bound together by a god or equivalent group of spellcasters/godbeast/whatever that’s learnt the ritual. Exceptional greenskins or freedom seeking undead are part of β€œofficial” order pantheon ones sometimes, while anything goes for the crazier ones

Also doesn't help that his weapon is specifically made to be held in that specific pose, so conversions will have to do a lot more work to make it appear natural in an upright pose, leading to errors, or they keep it as is and it just looks fucking weird (for example in the venturella version)

I think even back in whfb strigoi were desceibee as monstrously big, something with the more bestial nature of their strain or whatever. I wanna get into aos and after some thinking I'd like to start with the idoneth.
After looking around a bit it seems like they're kind of complicated to paint and play, especially for a total beginner. People really don't recommend it. Are they overreacting or is this faction as difficult as they make it out to be ?
Specifically I'd like to start with the new (?) spearhead with the akhelian king, if that makes a big difference.

nah, you can cook up a fairly simple color scheme for them if you want
if you feel intimidated by skin, clothes, and the plain organic surfaces of the eels, you can minimise the problems by using contrast paints, darker color schemes and stuff that adds "noise" like drybrush stippling or painting patterns, or abuse gloss varnish

not terribly. leave the riders off of the mounts for painting and glue them afterwards, and leave the shields as a separate piece during painting as well. do that and they should be pretty smooth sailing unless you want to get really fancy with sea creature patterning. most of their armor can just be painting with a single solid color or metallic and then hit with an ink or wash, and it looks good. leave the turtles canopy and crew as separate pieces for painting, as well as the shark canopy and riders and it makes it much easier.

> complicated to play

less so than it looks. at the end of the day, deepkin are an army that is mostly just doing 1 thing: its charging you very fast with very hard hitting precision units. thats about it. it does have a bit of utility with its spellcasting and thrall shenanigans, but those usually take a back seat or are avoided all together. the big game plan with deepkin is all about finding the right pressure points at the right time, using your speed to jump on those weak spots or eliminate high value threats in an instant, and then slipping away before you get obliterated on the return swing. i wouldnt call deepkin explicitly fragile, they have decent saves and defensive tech, but they are low health count, low model count, so they lack for bodies and health to absord what hits do go through, which is also why mortal damage (like spells and poison) are so threatening to them.

play cagey early on, then use your overwhelming speed to outflank your opponent and catch them in devestating charges and pincer manuevers, then slip away or jump over their lines and eat their vulnerable backline units.

cont

>Specifically I'd like to start with the new (?) spearhead with the akhelian king, if that makes a big difference.

spearhead looks great. first of all because it will let you play the spearhead small game format, which is a great way to learn the game but also just overall a solid game mode that even more experienced aos players still play. once you're familiar with the rules you can knock out a spearhead match in like 45 minutes. probably closer to an hour-hour and a half while still learning.

eels are great, bread and butter unit the army usually builds around. sword version is more defensive and better at prolonged fights and tying things up, spear version is more for high impact precision charges.

king/volturnos is usually at the head of most deepkin armies. solid profile, good target for artifacts and traits, and usually has a strong buff

reavers are a kind of skirmishy hit and run shooting unit thats used fairly often to support your charges by peppering enemy screens to open up holes for your units to get through, while they can dash off and claim objectives as your cavalry does the fighting.

beyond that, i would start looking at a shark or two, more eels, probably an eidolon at some point. turtle is good but tricky, its 1/4 of your total army in a full game concentrated in a single unit, which makes it vulnerable to being focused down and leaves you even thinner on bodies than normal for holding objectives and splitting charges.

not sure about the new heroes or manifestation thing, havent had the chance to play them yet.

i would definitely start with spearhead then, its a manageable bite sized game, both in terms of the hobbying commitment and the density of the rules, and the scoring and missions are more pared down compared to a full seasonal ruleset. the board you play it on is also smaller, so you can play pickup games on a card table, and dont have to carry as much.

Not every unit got an extra wound, heroes in particular are more squishy, as well as things that already had 2 wounds like the banshees

Breaking it down this is basically the result of the change
+NH deal better with mortals overall
+They lose attacks at half the rate they did before
-Effects that remove wards or lessen wards are much more impactful, I've noticed a trend where almost every new tome has a way to remove wards.
-Doubling health but reducing mitigation makes the poopy death heal not nearly as good (you have to heal injured models before restoring new ones)
-Effects that shut down command abilities will hurt mitigation, whereas before you could declare a unit to have a 5++ ward in the hero phase.

It's kind of a mix bag but ultimately think it's a bad change for nighthaunt because they're still constrained to a unique rule and overall the heroes and many units that already have multiple wounds are worse.

Mathematically, assuming no special rules, an attack against a 4++/6++ is the same as a 6+/4++. You can reach 4+/5++ with heroes, but infantry at best gets to a 5+/5++ with all out defense.

As to whether or not points go up, they received a lot of nerfs in other areas. Losing wave of terror & shademist/harridan's effect means losing -1 hit, -1 wound and strike last. Also the army is boring as fuck because it doesn't do anything but sit on points and teleport around like a shitty 3e soulblight.
Anonymous No.96303545

There's actually two of those on the harpoon crew that won't normally be seen, too. I accidentally forgot they had special weapons when building and I realized this as I built my last model. I quickly ripped his arms off and kitbashed the grappling hook into a body that shouldn't have that gun, but otherwise the two bodies that are supposed to have the special weapons in my crew are just holding their regular harpoons. (In this post >>96303161 those bodies are #s 2 and 5 from the left)

Also, I just realized that kitbashing the special weapons onto different bodies a bit of a roundabout way of making two monopose units distinct.

so, its not exactly that simple, its kind of the same against some attack profiles, but much more vulnerable to others

as far as the extra health goes, well thats going to entirely come down to points. if a unit goes from 1 health to 2 health and stays the same points, its a 2x durability increase, but if a unit goes from 1 health to 2 health and then goes up from 100/10 to 150/10, then its really only like a 1.3x increase, and if you are then taking 2x damage from certain weapon profiles, its an overall loss.

so like, this really isnt something we can suss out without knowing the points, but as far as incoming damage and ability to defend against it, here are a few profiles, one with an even mix of incoming physical damage and mortal damage, and the other being all raw physical damage hits.

it looks like durability will be roughly equivalent against mortal wound heavy damage, but be significantly less so against raw physical damage where the old saves were more effective

Forgot to mention they also lost 1 rend. And honestly killing things more in this edition means more than another wound in everyway. Lethality is still mega fuck high, so not finishing off a big hero and they get to swing back into you is going to surpass any gains you got into your health.

The intent of the book is pretty clear, to nerf nighthaunt and make them less "NPE" to brainlets in the future.

okay in all fairness they did have like a 70% winrate for the first 3 months of this edition, i can understand a break glass in case of emergency level change in response, and given the slow lead time on battletome publication, this tome would line up with that response time just about right
Anonymous No.96303593

that's true but they pretty much gutted not only the effectiveness of the army but how unique or fun it is to play for likely the next 3 years. Having read the tome basically every support hero has a 3+ roll for a marginal effect and wants you to play extremely passively.

I really don't understand why barely any armies that have shitstack units can get access to +1 attacks or +1 damage. Legitimately believe they design warscrolls with spearhead first in mind.

Anonymous No.96303633 >>96303680 >>96303755

bladegheists are down the extra attack on charge, myrmourn are down a rend on their warscroll. bgr's new effect is that you can't charge them unless you roll an unmodified 7 if they're on a point they control (control is determined at end of round, it's not contesting), harridan's new effect is they shut down healing and model return if the unit is in combat with them.

to get the same rend you got for free before on the charge (and extra rend is always better when you get to pick the targets and fight at full strength), you need to make a CV6 spell go off (so have a wizard ww 12") and not get unbound, put in on a unit, that unit has to fight, and THEN they get the -1 save debuff on them. Effectively this means one of your units won't benefit, and then the enemy will swing into the other unit that will benefit from it, reducing their impact. The debuff also falls off at the end of the turn, same as the charge debuff. There is not really an upside to this. If you want to work around this you could spend ~150 points on the foot hero that lets you fight with them, but that's a worse prospect than just bringing more bladegheists or whatever.

>bladegheists are down the extra attack on charge, myrmourn are down a rend on their warscroll. bgr's new effect is that you can't charge them unless you roll an unmodified 7 if they're on a point they control (control is determined at end of round, it's not contesting), harridan's new effect is they shut down healing and model return if the unit is in combat with them.
where are yopu pulling these changes from?

Eugh, that's rough. How fucking slow is GW that NH had to wait months to get hit with the nerfhammer.

Would someone happen to have the 4th ed battletomes for download? I've only been able to find SBGL so far, as well as the PtG Ravaged Coast book. I'm very interested in both KO and IDK though.

desu I kinda saw the writing on the wall when the faction terrain was that good because they don't do things like that for free

now im wondering if DoK is going to get bitch slapped too, not that I hope for it, the writer or design philosophy behind the NH tome really isn't healthy at all for the game, regardless of whose faction it happens to.

Morathi no longer only takes 3 damage a turn, but now elf and snake are seperate units you have to pay for each.

Anyone have any recommendations or ideas for what to put on my flyers for our AoS community? We have a somewhat active community that shows up for schedules events but I wanna drive up weekly game engagement for my club. Owner is happy to help and let me advertise it just unsure if I should go mega meme normie bait or try something more toned down but I don't want it to be dry.

"Age of Sigmar: We're not as sweaty and stinky as the 40k players. FOR HALF THE PRICE"

Then put like, a poorly photoshopped image of Buddy Christ from Dogma holding Alarielle or something with like a "JOIN TODAY" thing on it. And make sure it's one of those flyers where you can pull tabs off with a number on it or some shit.

It's actually crazy how much cheaper AoS is than 40k.

I'm getting a few of my local guys into it after they had a seriously bad event (they're a group of tournament players) and they played into knights every round for the entire weekend. Long story short the one dude wrote up an IJ list he liked and started pricing it out, and was shocked it was less than a thousand bucks at our local.

Lel that reminds me, was talking to some 40k players at the lgs with my friend, who casually told them two of the old ogre spearheads basically gave him a full 2k point army for 230 yuros, and the fucking looks on their faces man.

Another of them wanted to do "oops all skeletons" meme for SBGL, trying to make an army that was way more than his 40k army cost out of spite. Turns out our local has the death rattle box on the shelf. When he finished adding it up, the fucker actually bought that box. So he's bringing us to the bone zone I guess.

I just wouldn't wanna trash the other guys since this store is actually clean and the other club members take care of themselves. We've got autismos but they wear deodorant and shower. Plus most of the club is casual for the most part. More narrative and dad gamers than like sweaty 20 somethings. But the tab thing is a good idea and price.
