Pedantry usually means the player is checked out and, consciously or not, trying to sabotage the game.

That or you didn't screen out autists when recruiting for your campaign. (Hint: have everyone meet up for session 0 at a busy brunch cafe or bar. Autists HATE those places and have a hard time mentally filtering out the background noises).

Magic isn’t supposed to be real, even in fiction, technically speaking. That’s why it’s “magic”. It’s just this way of looking at something.

You can throw in a boring greyblob (I say greyblob because atheists have this big inability to see beauty/mystery/“magic” within nature) atheist perspective into literally any fantasy world. We’ve done it before. I don’t care how wibbly wobbly woo or weird the magic is. Some giant hypothetical higher dimensional alien will be able to look at it inside and out and poke at it to the point where it’s not magic to them. That big alien might even have a completely different bar, or tier, for magic. What is magic to us is not magic to it. It’s all relative. A wizard might not even see themselves as a wizard. Magic is often a one sided air or aura or presence given off.

This is why magic doesn’t work when it’s hard. It ignores the psychology of it. Why something is even seen as magic. Magic has always been soft. It’s a descriptor, not a definer.

...Okay, but usually when I play a caster in my games, I don't think about the metaphysics behind the fireball they're throwing, I just want to know if it killed the orc or not. I might save the metaphysics type stuff for in-character talk later, but that's just for fun.

That’s fine. I’m just over-analyzing. Calling something “magic” for the sake of it is precisely the point of magic. It may as well be magic, if it meets the criteria, or it’s in a position to be.
Anonymous No.96328250
>>96328177
Yeah, but just have to keep in mind that everything has its own space and time. I've played a scholarly type of wizard before where they will outright lecture others at the drop of a hat on their theories regarding the origins and properties of magic because that's the kind of shit they enjoy, but when it comes to combat I just stick to what the book says just so that I don't give the GM a headache. It is kind of fun to try and figure out how a sudden fireball conjuration operates the way it does, but I don't think it's an issue to give a minor concession to the GM that for the sake of the game, it's just a particular category of attack that does fire damage.

I have a few players somewhat like this, though they rarely insult people. This sort of pedantry is typically an expression of autism where one obsesses over the dictionary definition of words and disregards any connotation they may have, no matter how unimportant the distinction may actually be. It's often paired with being nitpicky about specific rules. They can get a bit finicky, but they're not difficult to handle. You just have to be very literal with them and don't bother arguing semantics with them.
>"The walls of the dungeon are lined with torchbearers, each with a lit torch shed—"
>"You mean sconces?"
>"Yes, sconces, each with a lit torch shedding light in a 20 ft. radius."
>"And dim light another 20 ft. beyond that."
>"Yes, that too."
They're pretty easy to satisfy. If they do actually get uppity about word usage and claim you're being insensitive or some shit (e.g. get annoyed if you use the term gypsy for the opening scene in Curse of Strahd and say it's a racist term), don't bother arguing the point and just use some substitute word. In most cases, they genuinely believe they're being helpful by correcting them—they're usually not, but the important bit is that they're not trying to start an argument. A passing acknowledgement is all you need to get the game back on track.

Literally none of the gypsies anywhere in the world consider it racist, as well as any of the local words for them, unless they're in the EU-funded organizations that give them money if they claim it's racist.

People have historically called other nations various retarded and misguided things, do Germans have a racism claim for half of Europe calling them "Mutes"?

I posted it but didn't write it myself.
it's not that old. Maybe less than a year. I remember the thread where it first came up (it wasn't green texted I believe); it was in a discussion about DM sharing bad gaming experiences.
The first iteration didn't specify the DM was from Toronto and or that the players were from the Balkans.
Regardless i think it was sti 2025
Those details came out as people started discussing it.

Surprisingly, the replied where half and half in favour/against the players. As more details came out (where are you from? Where are the players from? Is this in person? Have you ever met a Gypsy?) Opinions started to backfire against the DM. The Toronto thing really pissed people off.

Someone threw the term "cultural relativity" and the DM went on a tirade of how it can't be usef as a shield for blatant racism and human rights violations. This being 4chan, things escalated quickly.
He then posted a green text version of this a few weeks later in a different thread, but by this time it was obvious that he'd get no sympathy and that he was, as an anon put it, 'a gypsy DM in shambles".

Since then I've seen it only a few times but I fucking love it.

Autists are normally like that because pretending to be a smug super genius is how they cultivate a sense of false power despite having none. They want to be an above it all, looking down on the peasants type.
I can sympathize to a degree. They don't have power, pretending to be an anime asshole gives them a sense of personality and control. But honestly? When people are like this it's normally constant, and unfortunately, autists generally can't be reasoned with no matter how explicit you make things, because they spend their entire lives in total incomprehension of social norms; telling them they're violating even more, they won't be able to understand and normally just get butthurt about being persecuted.
At some point I can get over someone being an autist, what I can't get over is spending time with someone who's always sitting there looking for reasons to demean and mock other people to make themselves feel bigger.
It's still bullying, and it still makes them a fucking douche. Being on the spectrum makes them a little awkward, but being a prick is reason to kick them from the table. They always blame their autism, but the autism is just a filter for their core personality. I've met sweet autists, and I've met insufferable piece of shit autists. I can tell the difference, and I make that really fucking clear really fucking quick when they act like that.

Honestly, the semantic warfare, or word autism, of magic is a very big part of the magic, or the fun of it, and I wish people would understand this more.

Magic-by-any-other-name. Magic is ironic at its core. Like the irl Catholic church pretending their miracles weren’t magic. It was a way to control perception. It was a power move. The priests who weren’t stupid knew the true irony, and practiced legitimate black magic and demonology (exorcism stems from demonology) behind closed doors. “No it’s better!”, “No it’s allowed!”. “Your god is a demon!”. Etc. It’s the same with science, or ‘Magick’ (“that’s not magic, this is MagicK!”). It’s a punking game. Nature was either seen as magical or it wasn’t. The capital-w wizard won’t see themselves as a capital-w wizard, too transcendent, or too humble, they are. Magic is one sided. It’s an air or aura given off. The pointy hat is at times placed on the wizard’s head not by the wizard themselves, but by those they enchant. It’s all a bar. An angle. A ladder of perception. A magician isn’t even a magician to himself, not unless he sees the mystery himself.

It’s even like this in Lord of the Rings: the elves don’t see themselves or their crafts as magical, Gandalf dons the pointy hat with purpose, and the black machines of Mordor are seen as black magic.

Truly, all you need is essences of wonder, mystery, horror, ignorance. The stuff of enchantment. Even if the same words aren’t being used—the essence is still the same—as a matter of exposure logic.

Magic is a soft description, not a hard definition, and you isolate/define magic at your own peril to the detriment of anything else out there that could be seen/described as magical (what amazes one won’t amaze another). “Wow” is magic. Magic is “magic”. It’s very much in the quotations.

If you want magic in science fiction all you need is some “mad”/mad scientist, or some/something truly alien.
Anonymous No.96432831 >>96435544
>>96432783
What’s funny is that, despite being responsible for the whole wizarding school stereotype, or aesthetic, the world of academia has a hard disenchantment narrative. One could easily argue that the Victorian period, one of ingenious natural inquiry of the world’s mysteries (the scientific renaissance/revolution really), was the single most wizardly period of all, it just didn’t see itself as such.

Magic, or just typical fantasy, is painfully superficial once you realize that what constitutes it overall, or what it’s known for, is all too shared by science-fiction, and the real world.

The word miracle itself is interesting, because its core meaning is "something wonderful to behold." It even comes from the Latin word for admiration and wonder (in fact, miracle and admire come from the same root).
The sky clearing after heavy rain can be a wonderful thing, as much as someone recovering after an illness thought uncurable. Both can be called miracles, though far more people are amazed by the recovery than by a clear sky.

They only see the word. It’s low IQ. It’s like people who can’t think abstractly or who can’t into averages. If someone tells you “but I’ve met tall Asians” after telling them “most Asians are shorter than whites”, you’re dealing with an idiot. It’s the same if someone sincerely tries to argue that there’s any difference between magic and miracles.

Nope. He's saying that you can't just assume that everyone (people who have their own ability to perceive) will agree that something is magic/supernatural/unnatural/etc, even in a setting with explicit hocus pocus magic.

>"Okay, but the rules in my game say magic is a thing"
It doesn't matter what you pretend magic to be. Some (pretend/hypothetical) sufficiently advanced intelligence like an alien or time traveler can look at it the same way we look at electricity or the code in a computer. By that point it's just a matter of perception.

Location: The town square, now-desolate, it's inhabitants wanting nothing to do with the duel that's about to unfold.

The wizard raises his jade-gemerald staff up high. It begins to glow as he chants in cold determined fury.
Wizard: I've had enough of your kind looking down on us, practicioners of the arcane arts! Magic is to be cherished, shared, and learnt as the proper craft it is, and yet, you- You think you can just match millenia of thorough studies, just like that?! Becuase what?! You might have some tricks up your sleeve, but let's see how you handle this... I CAST... HELLFIRE MISSILE... furthermore... I ENCHANT IT TO BE QUADRUPLE THE SIZE. My cloak has been carefully woven by the most learned of artificiers of the northern realms... It will withstand the strike easily, but what about you, i wonder!?

The missile materializes all at once at the tip of the jade-gemerald staff, and quickly strikes it's target, The Magician, covering horizon in a whirlwind of flames.

Once the fanfair calms down, all that's left is a big crater. No sign of The Magician. Not even pieces of burnt cloth from his magnificent silky costume.

Wizard: There! That settles it! In the last moments of your miserable, "gifted" life, you've come to taste the true wonders of the arcane arts! AHAHAHA! HAH! HOHO-

Suddenly, a muffled sound is heard from within the Wizard's front pocket.
Unidentified speaker: Have you forgotten the true purpose of magic, old man? It's reason for being isn't to be understood, written down across thousands of tomes, dissected and stripped of everything that makes it what it is... The true reason of magic....... is to amaze.

Please check your pocket for me.

The Wizard does so, as if though against his own will, before pulling out the full body of The Magician, whom somehow managed to fit in just a pocket, against what common sense would dictate.

The Magician, now standing on his own two feet:Well, is this your card, old man?

Alan Moore was a genius writer, but he's just as much of a faggot "muh [x] was better in muh day" loser as the comic book geekoids he whines about. He's absolutely right that most comic book nerds are fat fucking losers and comic book companies are predatory miserable capitalist shark tanks, but he's genuinely not much better from how much he seethes that nobody reads all his "classical literature" books anymore in favor of cultural flotsam, as though for every Don Quixote or Les Misérables there wasn't a trillion shitty penny dreadfuls full of the same throwaway schlock content he's bitter and angry about. And for all his base competency as a writer, dude is as much of a fanboy as the fucko comic nerds he loathes. Dude misses the point of his literature works just as much as he exults them in his comic books, and his "truer to the text" subversions are on the level of tumblr fanfic writers. And that's not counting how his attempts to the actual writing business flopped hard, and all he really has left is his old man opinions on comic books and fame from Watchmen, which he probably must despise how it's one of the few things people bother to remember him for.

And you think I'm taking magic lessons from THAT sad fat fuck? Fuck no. I'd take philosophical lessons about "what magic is" from fucking Penn and Teller over that sad mess of a human being. Though even then, Alan Moore still probably has far more credibility than you ever will, wonderfag.
