How do i go about making a dnd character based around crossbows?

Do you want to use one big crossbow, or two smaller crossbows? Do you have anything more specific than 'crossbows' in mind? Do you want to use magic?

Play an artificer and flavor all your damage spells as magical bolts you shoot from your crossbow, that or a wizard. Playing any other class is the dnd equivalent of dragging your balls through a sea of nails and shattered glass

either make peace with having anemic damahe output or don't make a crossbowman, because for some reason practically every edition of D&D makes crossbows strictly inferior to any other ranged option except maybe thrown weapons.

Ask your DM if you can use a crossbow in this campaign.

Take the crossbow mastery feat that lets you reload for free, then maybe sharpshooter if its good in the edition you're playing. Rogue sneak attack and fighter multi-attack are both good directions to go, and warlock's eldritch smite works with ranged weapons, so decide if you want single-target damage with utility, reliable shooting with tankiness, or crit-fishing with magic

Assuming 5e:
Level 1 - fighter as your class, crossbow as your weapon, archery as your fighting style, any race with a dex bonus
Level 3 - any non-retarded subclass. I suggest battlemaster with menacing attack.
Level 4 - crossbow master feat
Level 6 - sharpshooter feat
From there on just focus on maxing dex. You can multiclass into rogue too if you want.

Enjoy dealing absolutely stupid fucking damage until you inevitably get outscaled by some fuckass spellcaster towards the end of the campaign.

Forgot to mention this, but if your DM allows variant human/custom lineage you should 100% play that and pick sharpshooter as your lvl 1 feat. Then you just spend your lvl 6 ASI to boost your dex.

Do like a zoro from one piece and hold a third crossbow in your mouth

Scout and/or Rogue, multiclassing if need be. Take Crossbow Sniper, Weapon Focus, etc. Use marbles to force balance checks, and thus make them eligible for sneak attacks. Poison's also great, and you definitely want to enchant them with Quick Loading.
