One of my favorite games ever so a bit biased opinion here.
It's considered by many one of the best games ever made. The dialogue is fantastic (I personally HATE the 3DO voice acting, which is optional thankfully), the art is very endearing, the different races are very interesting and unique, it's very funny at times and sometimes the story is sad and very tragic, you have tons of control over how to achieve your goals, and the music is great - everything is OLD, mind you, the graphics are low-res and pixelated and the music is MIDI, but the artstyle is consistent and very captivating and charming.
The problem isn't the old controls, but the old gameplay. There's actually two problems:
1. If you don't like the space combat, or the resource gathering part of the gameplay, you will not enjoy most of the meat of the gameplay since that's a lot of what you do inbetween dialogue trees and ship customization. Some people just let the PC fight for them or uae a guide or star charts for where the best minerals are. I loved both.
2. The game DOES NOT hold your hand AT ALL. You're thrown into the most opennest world possible, there's a time limit you're not made aware of, the game doesn't keep track of conversation notes and hints and coordinates your're give, and generally you're expected to be a big boy and literally sit with a notebook and write shit down and open the star map and plan your route based on your fuel capacity and immediate goals. And you need to keep in mind what you have and want to achieve. You could in theory sit down by the starting point and do nothing for a couple years and just lose. So you have to be proactive and show interest in the plot (which is easy imo).
If you can look past these potential issues and you like space opera / scifi / Mass Effect style games, you will love this game. It's not praised for nothing.
