I have been absent from the gaming scene for almost 4 years, mostly due to personal stuff, how can I re approach my old table buddies without sounding like a desperate dick after leaving without saying a word?

Anon you're already asking /tg/ for god sake, you already are a desperate dick (partially). Just be an sensible non-autistic adult and ask them out.

Reach out and reconnect with them. Meet up for coffee, go to a boardgame cafe, or a boardgames night at a game store. Just know that you will probably be asked what happened and might owe them answer

reach out to them, maybe start off with an apology, it'll probably be fine in the end

It's not easy. Personal stuff had me isolate for about four years, losing touch with virtually every friend. All you can really do is reach out. Some will respond. Some won't. A holiday is a good opportunity to break the ice. "Happy thanksgiving! It's anon. How have you been?" If they're interested in rebuilding a relationship with you, they'll accept it. If they're not then, well? We do it to ourselves. There's some saying about what you're supposed to do after making the bed, but I forget the second part.

>Hey man I know it's been awhile but how are you doing? Are you still hanging out with (insert name of other group members)
Try that and see where it goes, if you need help after this point it's hopeless.

Focus on reaching out, asking about how they are, and explaining your situation first.
Not sounding desperate means that you don't even assume that they're still running a game, let alone asking if you can join, until you actually reconnect with them as friends.

Maybe propose a movie night or dinner to just hang out.

Don't do this. If they ask, answer succinctly. Do NOT try to get back into someone's life by offer explanations and excuses about yourself. You've already taken something from them. When you ask for sympathy you're trying to take more. Answer if they ask, and keep your answer short. Absolutely do not ramble at someone about your feelings and personal struggles. You're already on the low-ground.

>Hey, man, how've you been? Still running X game? I saw Y thing just came out for it.
>Remember that time we played X game and you did Z feat? That was great
>Sorry about disappearing. I got overwhelmed by work and (succinct overview of personal issues) that was hard to manage, so I sort of escaped inward/retreated from a lot of hobbies
>Would love to grab a beer with you sometime
Also, tell us what happened, faggot
