Of course I posted this right before the other thread died.

Here's and Imperial fist 1k list for an introductory game for my buddy, please let me know if I should change anything, it's themed around combat engineers:

HQ:
ForgeLord, Paragon of battle.
Troops:
2*10 tactical
1*10 breachers with lascutters in a rhino modeled as an ARV
Logistical benefit:
Contemptor dread with conversion beamer and chainfist.

Aux Det: armoured support
2* vindicators

I was originally making him as an Ordo Sinister engine and figured out if anyone in the Imperium would use eldari tech to seal and mess with warp related forces it's those guys.
I've mentioned it before on this board but this was made years ago and never truly finished, as soon as I can pick it up from storage it's going to be completely overhauled.
Probably half of the writing along the panels are the names of the various commanders and planets my local friend group fought over (and the princeps is converted to look like my wife).

As for the slaanesh symbol, I've got each Chaos God's symbol somewhere on the titan because in my mind it's all part of various incantations of protection against the powers of that deity.

Now that I've learned a bit more about the symbology of chaos I'll probably remove those (though I want to keep the one on the back right pauldron that has something to the effect of "fuck tzeentch" in the runes of chaos)

It's meant to be a teaching game, right? A Vindicator is going to centralize the game around it, and two is just gross. What will the opposing team be? At they might not even bring any AT. If you want to teach, then include a melee unit so he learns combat too, and then something like a Scorpius so he learns about breaching, indirect fire, scatter etc.

I was going to bring a straightforward 1k Alpha Legion list:

HQ
Saboteur, Paragon of battle

Troops
1*12 tacs in a rhino
2*10 tacs

Logistical benefit:
Plasma predator with lascannon sponsoons

Aux set: headhunter leviathal
1*5 Melta headhunters
1*5 knife and meltabomb effrit

Before the game starts I'll go over how to screen out infiltrators and I wanted to give him a good variety of targets (with the effort being a threat to the Vindicator but also being the perfect target for the Demolisher cannon.

Tech-priests can fairly easily afford the familiar and still come in much cheaper, and the cybertheurgy is a freebie, failing Overcharged Reactors some 28% of the time with the Familiar is not a huge downside when the Praevian's bots are all WS/BS3 all the time. The Tech-Priest is also Specialist/Sarge, not Champion or Command, he isn't Challenge-eligible in the first place.

Overcharged Reactors also affects cybertheurgists in the target unit, so if the priest is casting on his own squad he will actually be WS5 a pretty decent percentage of the time, and have an actual power axe to use said weapon skill with. Being 1w, 1i and one point of armour save down is the major downside here, since the minor zapping from Cybertheurgic Feedback can go on the robots anyway.

>>96329304

Your first techpriest in a Mech army is a freebie Prime anyway, but allied ones don't get that. I quite like the idea of stiffening up my Solar Auxilia with Archimandrite techpriests embedded in the lasgun squads, though - they add a gravgun each for statuses and raise the morale stats to 9/9/8/8, or 10/10/9/9 for the Prime one.

AL feel like the worst possible faction for a teaching game since they break a lot of rules. The Legion trait alone is already some extra cognitive load on the back of your head. Effrit are also weird with their special rule but it's just the one unit so should be fine. Also, the Saboteur is probably gonna get raped in a challenge, but that gives your friend a feelsgood moment when it happens. Maybe try replacing a tac squad with a despoiler dquad with a couple different weapons, so he can see how initiative steps work, and the various advantages of axe vs maul etc.

A fun sideline on the subject of the Troop tech-priests is that any cybertheurgist can be Heterodox, and any Heterodox can be Malefic at no extra cost. The cybertheurgy rite Aetheric Amplification lets a priest boost any Malefic unit, regardless of type or faction, albeit at a -4 total penalty for casting a -2 spell on Malefic (-1) non-Mechanicum (-1) units. Troop tech-priests with Cyber-Familiars will succeed about 41% of the time, or 58% if Prime or you upgrade to a proper Int 9 Magos.

It's quite tempting to run a bunch of Malefic space marines, either with a Primarch or a primary detachment like Supremacy Cadre, and see if an allied Magos can give them the WS5/BS5 juice. The main downside is that when the damn thing wears off a third of the unit is going to fall over dead from feedback, because compared to combat bots basic MEQ are made of paper. It's considerably more attractive on 2+/W2 Legion units, but it's a lot harder to find Prime slots for them.

>>96329420

The primary detachment can be mixed-Arcana, and any cybernetica priest allows his retinue to score, so if you want your beep boops to score just bring Cybernetica Magi/Tech-Priests and stick them with the Castellax squads, rather than other kinds of Magos. Your Apex pick stays open, although finding good places for my non-Cybernetica Archmagi to hang out is a pain.

Personally I have my eye on the Lacrymaerta Apex - a maxed out Panoply of Cruelty is 27 Ursarax, each of which is a T5 S6 W3 blender, and the whole lot cost 705pts and cover ground well. They'll turn a power-armoured line into soup and rip up their Rhinos for good measure.

So I'm adding a Librarian to my traitor salamanders. Their whole thing for the leaders is they have armour burnt off showing flesh underneath. The leader having taken a multimelta to the face, failed his armour save, since can't take one, but passed his feel no pain, due to the relic Salas had in 2.0. She he's got half his chest out. The other one, the champion, has one arm of his armour burnt off because the flames of his daemon weapon (paragon 'blade') hammer, burns to the bone and burns off any armour he tries to wear. So he has a single Tartaros shoulder pad for a pauldron, a-la Greigor Felhand.

Apothecaries do two things:
They allow you to use the Medic! reaction in the shooting phase, which lets you knock off 1 damage from each wound the unit has suffered on a 4+ rolled for each wound

The second thing apothecaries allow you to do is to make an INT check in the morale phase, which if passed gives you a -2 modifier buff to dropping a status

It is absurdly spread out and not at ALL easy to follow, but that's it. You take primus medicae if you want a biker/jetbike/jump pack/terminator apothecary.

What's the highest BS unit you can get that isn't just a maxed out Primarch? A Malefic Mor Deythan squad with Mech buffs can hit BS8 for one turn, at which point they crit everything they Precision Shot, and a variety of units can hit 6 any turn they have that buff up, but I can't think of any other +BS buffs around and I doubt any squads are going to beat Mor Deythan for max accuracy. If you want the whole schtick, it's because the campaign rules written by another friend means neither of us can use RoW until basically the last games of the campaign. Long story short, loyalists ended up being advantaged and we both know this campaign won't go for long before the organiser ticks off and tells everyone to fuck off once things don't go his way exactly the xay he wanted it.

Since I basically painted the army for this, I made a list that would take as few models as possible, for the smallest possible investment in this endeavour.

You can see my entire 2k points in the picture.

Really lads, if you have any wishes to write campaign books, please don't. Your friends will play nice to not be rude but if you're not a professional, it'll be shit.

Plasma is a trap option. I am legally obligated to say two Breaching 5 shots are better than a single Breaching 4 one, but autocannons shoot three shots with double the damage, making them the actual anti-termie option.
Meanwhile, plasma is actually for...for whenever you can't have a stationary autocannon yet you still want to use the second most expensive gun against basic single-wound MEQs, really. Like, not even VEQ; those are better engaged by autocannons too.

Nemesis are an odd one even for the Legends PDF.
>Supposedly destroyer adjacent but don't have bitter duty or Firestorm.
>Has the Breachers special weapons list (Lascutter et al) combined with the Destroyers Special list (Rad Launcher)
>Has a special Boltgun that causes Panic
>Can come in groups of 20 and start at 10 and has standard Tactical stats.
>Neither Line or Vanguard

There's just so fucking much going on here that I genuinely don't know what they're meant to be for. Holding onto a point and spooking people with Panicking Boltguns?

If we're talking about Destroyer variants that are actually pretty good. Maybe even thematic then I've got two candidates: Angel Tears from the Liber + The extra stuff they get in the Legends and the Red Hands Destroyers for the World Eaters.

>Angel Tears start with Volkite Pistols and could have just stopped there, but they also can all have what are basically Rad Launchers. Or as of legends you can have 10 Jump Pack Space Marines wearing spooky halloween masks and carrying Assault Cannons.
>This is dumb and overcosted. But hear me out, it's also fucking rad.

>Red Hands looked at ranged firepower and different pistol options and went: Nah. We're going to have Close Combat Weapons instead.
>Can be fitted with Caerbaer weapons, so you can give them 4 Falax Blades and a Whip.
>Charge - shoot them with rad grenades - then hit them with 4 attacks all with Phage (s) and then 20 attacks with AP3.
>Or two of them could just have Thunder Hammers.
>Stopped reading the firestorm rules at the first paragraph.

>Nothing about ICK vs suzerains should have changed?
Yes and no. Suzarians really did not lose much of their edge compaired to IKC. Since the axe is is Breaching 4, and they are base S4, against terminators any wound is still a 4 so its just a matter of weight of volume for price. IKC still are a gambling weapon, but lost a lot of their bonus because of slayer of kings and deathwing being shit or gone at this point.

at 10ppm on an already 275 point squad of 5, its cheaper to just go for DWC or Retinue at that point.

Dont suck just highly MEH now which is fucking gay.
All DA issues come from indirect nerfs, such as plasma getting fucked, torrent going away, and heavy being a bitch to get into combat with.

OH one other thing.
Taking SA allies and running a Artillery section of 3 basilisks? Worth it. all game long shelling things across the map and putting out Pinning 2. Looking back at it rather then trying to throw out statuses i might just go for trying to wipe squads faster.

Either way i still lost because i went second and could not get onto points early

I am concerned with scoring, my Mechanicum are very much lacking in scoring units fast enough to take points early due to the fact that I can't give my HQs jetpacks so they can't confer Comptroller to anything speedy enough to reach the points on their own, and our transports are very expensive. I'm hoping Militia and Cults will have some decent cheap artillery + Line troops here, since Solar Aux can absolutely do it with cheap basilisks but they're a bit one-note.

No, /hhg/ told you it CAN be countered. Skew lists have always existed for as long as 40k has been a thing. This would not be a problem if I could use my two converted Magi with jump packs that have been bouncing around the table with Thallax squads for two editions now, but I can't, so I can't give them Comptroller (the mech equivalent of Line, but confers to units from attached characters) without slowing them down from 10" antigrav to 6" normal move.

Ursarax are absolute power armour blenders, and they do have Vanguard 3, but the slow HQs are my only source of Line-equivalent and it's really killing my listbuilding.

Footslogging cataphractii were never viable

The reposition reaction in the movement phase is strong, but with a land raider and moving it's less of an issue. A 4" reposition is very strong in a vacuum, less so in a world where objectives, terrain and other units exist. You still get your setup move (which can be buffed, even on cataphractii) and charge roll.

The evade reaction in the charge phase is light or cavalry types only, so most cataphractii targets won't be able to do it at all. This one is significantly harder for heavy types to overcome, but will be rarer.

None of this counts if you're playing against a White Scars opponent who can just move their full movement in response to anyone with the audacity to end their movement within 12" of them.

And if you do find yourself in a challenge, take some of turtle gambits and try to get lucky enough to end the challenge without dying. Not ideal, but the option is there.
Plus, not EVERY Command unit has a 2+ save you know. Remember how everyone was going "OOPS ALL OPTAE" a few weeks back? That said... yeah, if you give him an AP3 weapon, it's sole purpose is to help him kill 3+ marines. So as long as you are building him and his unit around that concept, then sure.

But... I dunno, giving a Mounted Praetor or Centurion a power weapon and putting him into a unit of Jetbikes or Outriders (Or Golden Keshig if WS) with the sole job of bullying backline firesupport or infiltrating units like Seekers or Recons could work?

For them not to be compared to BS5 infiltrating elites with access to Breaching 4+ boltguns.
Nemesis start at 10 men not 5 and they, for some reason are Shock Assault. Both of these things imply they're more a basic troop replacement. I'd probably consider Tacticals or Breachers to be their contemporaries. They lose Line, but get Botlguns that can put a Status on something, and with Lascutters they can delete any Land Raider that comes within charging distance to drop off their Terminators. And Lascutters aren't bad against Termies in Nemesis squads either because they already only had 1 attack anyway.
So, if you compare them to Tacs then you lose Line and they're 65pts more expensive to start with. But get a lot more firepower options to deal with threats than Tacs who sort of want to just try and soak casualties and not get status'd. (Something the Nemmies are marginally better at, being Ld8 and Cl8 on the Sarg)

So, that's sort of where I see them.

Word Bearers have an effective legion trait and a good reaction but the rest of their army is worst in slot. They basically don't have an armoury and they literally don't have an auxiliary detachment while their apex is worse than the rulebook generics plus all their units are bad except the Mhara gal.

lorgar is A-tier, argel tal is at least A-tier, the panic2 jetpack flamers are A or better in a fear1 army (+10 points can get panic3 phosphex on the champ which stacks with Fear nearby), zardu layak's ability to steal a terminator each turn to kill his men then block their return damage from zardu's unit is legit (and possibly even funnier since it prevents a contemptor or konrad curze from coming nearby and getting stolen and forced to kill their own allies), Lorgar's dad isn't solid as a brawler but gives a whole unit 11/10/9 on nerd stats and has a buff for +1 to wound in melee or to take nerd stats to 13/12/9 which is maybe the highest in entire game - higher than primarchs. Hard-counter to meme lists focused on expensive panic3 phosphex rapier spammers or fear+panic(2) flamethrower spammer lists when your 10man termie brick passes 100% of its status tests easily on center objective.
The WS5 dreadnought with 7 wounds is essentially a Panic(3) flamethrower since it has Fear so it can kill one unit in melee while it feared another off the board on the way over - the WB dread would be fair even if it only had claws + panic3 flamer, but it also gets the plasma cannon it can shoot in addition to the flamer and meleeing shit, so it's easily S or A tier.

Erebus is kinda gay (fuck him) and Gal Vorbs are probably 10% overcosted (they're basically just fear1 tanks who are faster than terminators, they have no hitting power by themselves but can be joined by other stuff like Argel Tal who adds 3.5" movement and AP2 threat, or Lorgar for super-hammer beatsticking) If they were fairly costed, they'd probably be kinda overpowered considering how much essentially panic 3-4 the wordbearers can access.
The +1 combat res thing is just a nice bonus and if it saves your army like 50 points on standards, it's done much more than the dark angel one that is worth 0 points.

Fuck, that IS way more than it should be. They massively overvalued having a Breaching 5+ Plasmagun that doesn't need to overload. That should be 15pts max. I still think they're better than the TSon's special flavour of Plasma, since D2 only matters 90% of the time on Terminators, and being Breaching 6+ makes that impractical.

The Tainted Weapon is still okay though, sure it's 5pts more than a Power Sword, since this game literally can only seem to do things in 5pt increments, but Phage (S) on a weapon that's freely available to anything that can have the Sargeant melee and Officer list (which includes Vet Assaults I think? Every TS unit uses Rending5+ so hits of 5 or 6 automatically breach 100% of the time.
So instead of AP2 dmg1 plasma guns with 24" range tzeentch can buy AP2 dmg2 plasmaguns with 18" range, which is overall a big improvement for killing terminators, definitely worth paying 5 extra points compared to a regular plasmagun that does half damage.

The Ashen Boys are competing with Phosphex which can do the routing job more effectively from a far greater range.

>but you need a siege breaker for that.

You need a character to bring ashen boys too, 1 siege breaker can bring 2 phosphex rapier and 2 phosphex arquitors. 1 cent can bring 4 ashen circle.

from what I'm reading it seems there's a one psychic power cast by each unit limitation, but no limit on how many buffs one unit can receive?
Neither of the two psychic powers is a reaction. I can't find anywhere saying a unit can't be affected by two psychic spells per turn, just that a unit containing a psyker "may not USE more than one psychic power for a unit under their control" (no ban on receiving multiple)

If that's true
unit buffs itself with rending5+ during stage 4 of a shooting attack using corvidae.
second unit of a divination mage <18" away buffs tzeentch unit during stage 4 of a shooting attack with precision5+ (set fire groups stage)

stage 5-9 resolve batch of shots.
Dump every rending 5-6 that're all automatically precision onto enemy primarch. That's avg 3-4 wounds to a primarch from a 10man nerdplasma squad with buff, no matter what the primarch is hiding in.

Thats two different rules, apples and oranges. -X to initiative is part of the weapons profile when using it. Impact(I) is a special rule of the weapon, and it says models equipped with it get a bonus to initiative on charges. Just like a model with a cyber familiar gets a bonus to INT checks. incorrect. Impact says it's either a rule on a model or a rule on a weapon. And when that model or weapon charges, it gets a bonus. At least at the level of infantry firearms, yeah. They are surprisingly lacking in heavy anti-tank, although I think the big lascannon thanatar might be better than it looks since it also has a Pinning (2) secondary weapon. Sadly, I don't think anything that isn't a vehicle can split fire by default, or I'd be a much bigger fan.

It’s sort of strange and interesting coming from 40k where the Ultramarines are the posterboys/β€œmain characters” to them being off to the side doing their own thing in the Heresy.

It's just that Ultras are generic and boring. It works fine when you need a blank representative of the entire SM faction in 40k, but when every army in the game is SM then the bland guys are boring

the only real difference is the new noise marines are on larger bases (40mm) compared to 32mm of actual noise marines. But pretty much nobody would actually care since they're just a small shooty unit, not like the larger base actually helps them in any way. They're not an aura-character or something.

Had fun at the first day of Summer Slaughter in Piscataway. Game 1 (in 2.0) vs Word Bearers went well, 31-11. Highlight was Argel Tal killing my praetor in one turn, then my Immortal Sgt challenging him and surviving 3 turns after. Game 2 I had to fill in in 3.0, and unfortunately my list had quite a large points handicap but… I still managed a clear win. 16-9.

Im helping my dad out since hes trying to get into Warhammer.

Currently he has

Geigor Fell Hand
Praetor with axe
2 squads of 10 Tacticals
3 Saturnine Terminator (i gave him half of mine)
1 Saturnine Dreadnought with conversion beamer and graviton pulverizer
1 Sicaran Venator

What would be a balanced thousand sons list to play against him? I want to teach him to learn the game but im worried ill blow him up too quickly or make it too easy.

Looks pretty well rounded all things considered, aslong as you bring something similarly varied without any of the broken combos it should be fine. His ICs don't reslly have s home and he's plauing a SW army with zero melee units, so he won't really have a trait. Maybe have him play them as IF instead? (Call Geigor a praetor)
Anonymous No.96336769 >>96336783

Should be fine really. Whilst not perfect, the unit balance in 3.0 is close enough that you can't unintentionally curb stomp your opponent because you brought one too many dreadnoughts or something.
The only possibly overbearing unit would be the 10 man TS autocannon squad if you give them the rending 5+ buff, but if that saturnine dreadnought puts that conversion beamer blast on them they're gonna die real fast so should be fine.

it might actually be... for white scars. With 12" moving cata terminator bricks (6 + 2" for passive + 4" from stormseer which doesnt count as rushing) and Fast(2) on first turn for 2" extra charge distance. Being white scars, they also setup +2" instead of +1" of normal terminators, so 14"+highest of 2d6 threat range (often 19"). You can also juice it by having a jetpack character jump in front of the terminator brick and join it at the end of his movement, adding 3.5" more to the threat range (coherency+base size) for around 22.5 inches of threat for each heavy terminator brick.

And stormseers are just 105 points, so a lot cheaper than buying landraiders for each brick. They also are command so they create extra detachments for your army, instead of costing detachments like transports/landraiders would.
Anonymous No.96336991
>>96336978
oh I forgot to add the fast(2) to charge range, so more like 21" which a character leapfrogging the squad can increase to 24.5" on first turn
