I mostly try to fit things into the TT. I zero in on three styles - Shadowrun, warhammer fantasy, and history (pict shown here). Hips are better than thighs, but thighs are good too

I don't mind the edgelords and depressives, they have their own complexities that were more than appealing as well (for example Karsa, Trull, Seren, Onrack, etc. are another few favourites), but Bugg and Tehol are just so entertaining. I never imagined until Midnight Tides that Erikson could write good comedy.

Have you read any of the Esselmonts? I have The God is Not Willing on my shelf that I still need to read as well.

Beauchelain and Korbal Broach are pretty fun. Iskaral Pust and Mogora were also good comedic characters that broke the doom & gloom

Another highlight for me were the exchanges between Karsa and Samar Dev, savagery vs. science, instinct vs. philosophy, etc. Such good characters man.

Well noticed, yes, I often give her a tired look as she's at least partially a demigod of world-weariness and being a long-suffering soldier.

As for portraits, I look for personality above all. I want to look at the portrait and immediately get ideas about how to write the character. Even the most minor mannerisms like a slight smirk can tell a lot.

Another detail people often skip is the background/set piece, which can go a long way to contextualizing the character. Even something as simple as a dominant colour can give added flavour.
