4e fricking turned all fear effects into knockback, made all mind-effecting powers purely mechanical , and removed the last vestiges of morale. 4e also didn't invent the concept of monster statblocks describing a monster's tactics, it just removed nearly all the ecology so that tactics could take up more space (and ecology gives players ways to manipulate monsters without needing mind-affecting/fear magic)

It was a lot more than twice as much HP sometimes (Large sized monsters), and 4e also got rid of most instances of attacking more than twice per turn (replacing them with retarded AOE effects), and made even the most powerful monsters deal extremely low damage (the 4e tarrasque has 1420 HP but can deal a maximum of 4d12 +32 damage against a single target, and that's on a recharge)
