hey /tg/ i challenge you to give me a dark fantasy setting without these 3 tropes...

>rape
>racism
>slavery

is it too hard to give a setting that doesn't have this stuff? or barely even mentions it? you do know you don't need these things for a dark fantasy RIGHT?

If I could name even one, it would probably have torture in it.

Dark fantasy is just fantasy that openly explores adult themes. What's the point if you specifically rule out all the horrible shit real people do to each other?

Incorrect, you can't.

You can prove me wrong by giving me an example of a pre-existing dark fantasy setting without those 3 tropes.
If you can't, you'll have to accept that I was right.

I refuse the challenge as everyone should.
If you can't handle those topics then you are being, rightfully, gatekept out of the dark fantasy sub-genre. It does not need to, and should not, change to be approachable for you or anyone else who can't take it.

I'm making a dark fantasy setting and for a moment I thought I'd passed the test. Then I realised there's technically racism by omission, as there's only whites in it.

I can't name any but the decline and collapse - let's say for ecological reasons - of a wealthy enlightened empire would certainly fit the bill
People would eventually start rioting and killing each other without rape, racism or slavery ever having entered the arena in significant quantities

Easy. Material Scarcity.

A "dark fantasy" much like reality where either because of war, natural disaster, or unknowable otherworldly force, the basic materials (food, water, shelter or the material to build shelter) are severely depleted.

Base it on ancient Greek/Rome, where due to the constant conflicts and empire expansion, the land is salted and ruined.

Or come up with your own reasons.

Its hard to adventure when your moral choices are dictated by hunger, thirst, or exposure to the wilderness.

You must understand that these things happen. They happen in your optimistic, heroic campaign. They happen in your awful grimdark campaign. They happen in real life.

The only difference is how much light is shining on them. Very few people like vividly described slavery, rape, torture, racism and so on. The error lies on the vivid description, not the existence of tropes. Don't overdo it.

>You find the dark lord's chamber occupied by a harem of various women. They are chained, and look up to you for release. You set them free through the way you came in. One whispers you where the lord keeps his prized weapon.

Example of slavery and even implied rape that flies everywhere and can even be a stock scene in a comic or movie. It's all in the presentation.

Black Company. Slavery and racism aren't major factors. There's definitely a lot of rape, but the narrator (who is the annalist of Black Company) doesn't like to speak ill of his "kin", so it's hardly ever mentioned "on-screen".

Depends on your interpretation, otherwise there's suggestion of rape with Seethe and Gwynevere, the giants in Sen's Fortress were slaves, and racism... well that depends on what you count as racist, there's a lot of hate for specific groups and species.

Anonymous No.96385930
Slavery is an unusual topic because it's edgy in some contexts but not others. A story set in ancient Rome can feature slavery and slave characters without needing to make a big statement about it or focus on how bad it is. It's just a fact of life in Rome and readers generally accept that. Fictional settings with slavery on the other hand invariably make a big awkward deal out of it, either in an edgy way or in a heavy-handed moralizing way.

nothing comes to mind, but they certainly aren't necessary. Just do Cosmic Horror with more fantastic elements and you get a more existential dark fantasy. You don't need stuff as personal and individual as rape, prejudice, and slavery to make a work dark and/or depressing

No, I don't think you can. You certainly don't need to emphasize the racism, or slavery, or rapeβ€”but a setting /without/ them is trying to have your cake and eat it too; your world isn't dark if these basic cruelties don't exist in it.
