Here's how I think of it.

This image will not happen in a D&D session. It will not happen in mine, in yours, or in anyone else's. It has never happened and never will.

Long time fans have every right to complain about the direction the franchise they dedicated much of their lives too. Without the original players it never would have gotten this far to start with. I frankly have a lot to say about a lot of it too. But frankly I'd also suggest that past a certain point it's just not worth caring about. I still have my old editions and I'm content to play those or a different game. Feel free to hate but find something else to like.

What annoys me isn't the idea of gayness but the prevalence of absolute faggotry. Which may not seem like it but it is a important distinction. Because for whatever reason gays these days can't ever just simply exist. Nobody is ever JUST gay and that's it. Nobody ever just wants to rescue a prince instead of a princess. OP image is a prime example. This isn't fantasy. Oh they're dressed up as such but they're not. It's just a gay pride parade where everyone has nothing to say about how much a giga queer they are. The fantasy element should always be the primary focus. And this isn't say you should hide it or anything but what if instead of the OP image you instead had an image of a hero saving their [insert loved one] here from some kind of peril. Or they expressed it front of a slain dragon. Or if want something more picturesque and quite do it front of an impossible scenery, a world with three moons cast over a desert wasteland and towering castle walls. Actually i think its an interesting quirk of allignments in general- if you have objective moral allignments the only interesting thing you can do with it in a story is subvert it.
Is a beholder supposed to be good? No. But if you come across an evil beholder is its evilness actually interesting? The "truer" the beholder the more it loses its character and degenerates to a stat block

It's more that Beholders in text tend to be aggressive, xenophobic, and rather insane by default, so it takes much more to explain away how a beholder can be "good" than it does for it to be "evil". Not saying a table can't do it, but it's more of an uphill battle than for most other monster species.

I think you're assuming an ultra-hardline position and environment that usually doesnt exist. Take averness for example. Its wall to wall with evil creatures, but the vast majority are willing to negotiate. Over the course of the campaign a diplomatic neutral character will achieve more good than a homocidal LG character who's too busy actively purging their own allies.

Allignment isnt perscriptive after all.

The problem is, that like it or not DnD does represent the face of the whole industry. And because of this, whatever DnD does do does in some way reflect on the hobby as a whole. You can say go play another game or another edition, and yes people should if they don't like the current one but DnD is the headliner and what people expect out of this is going to change what they expect out of other games and its going to change how outsiders look in.

One of my best memories in this hobby was a 5e game where there was one girl with blue hair. People knew what their characters were for and played accordingly.
