I hate how Warhammer popularized abstract missions for wargames/skirmishes. I absolutely can't stand when missions have no meaning or logic behind them. I literally can't play Infinity/Flame of War/Malifax because of it. When will this all ends?

Now ask: write a paragraph of what you think a stereotypical Warhammer fan would say.

i think what OP means is missions that don't really have a clear narrative reason

you're standing on points and doing actions, ok, why?
compare to say, 7th ed with the relic, both sides were fighting over a mystical relic that you can put your own factions flavour into

Missions that have no narrative objective and are generated randomly. A prime example of this is the mission cards in Warhammer that generate meaningless tasks every round.

err you just have to stand on an arbitrary objective marker, because...it's an objective, okay?! just like your favourite competitive video game modes. don't forget to buy in-store this month to get a collectable coin that you can use as an objective marker!

It's the slop of wargames.

Infinity has several, if not many missions in its capital T Tournament packs that are pretty explicity representing things though, some even 1 to 1 lifted from narrative campaigns.
>flesh eating nanobots are flooding the area, secure what you can while crippling your enemy
>both sides must protect a rogue ai hiding in a server cluster
>there's a valuable armory you must secure before the enemy does the same
>holy shit, it's cold as fuck. hold ground and turn on heaters to protect lightly armored units while your heavy units push forward in climate controlled suits
>this place is gonna blow, evacuate your personnel through the giant elevator
>etc
>some are still pretty abstract or insane nonsense like playing roomba pong while shooting each other
I think at some point it ends up on you to let yourself get immersed in a game to give context to objectives, abstract or otherwise. I've not played FoW or Malifaux to know how they structure missions save for Malifaux's use of secret schemes and objectives. You should consider osprey books and boomer shit off drive thru rpg, unironically.

abstract actions (that are all super imperium coded) that grant nonsense monopoly money that magically make you "win" when you have more than the other guy

why, how and what is a pyrovore raising a banner and why does it make tyranids the victors after getting tabled

The main problem is the placement of mission markers and secondary objectives. The placement of markers is completely at the mercy of the players and they are often more concerned with victory than narrative. And secondary objectives often do not take into account nuances and you get victory points for one model that has gone around the edge of the table. The fact that the model has nothing to interact with and logically it has no value for combat or achieving the goal is not taken into account, here you have abstract victory points that reflect nothing. At least it would make sense if these were quality gladiatorial games, but no it is like gang clashes/military operations/covert operations, but the rules do nothing to reflect this.

Then why is he complaining about Infinity? Infinity has multiple mission types and they're all distinct with in-universe explanations. The only abstraction is leaving things vague enough for you and your opponent to come up with a reason your opposing factions could be after the same HVT or trying to hack the same terminals to secure the data. After all, a Combined Army vs Tohaa match would have a completely different High Value Target than, say, JSA vs Yu-Jing

Annihilation is okay, Domination is stupid, Supplies would be okay if there were better rules for positioning of markers and carrying cargo, Firefight is complete nonsense. And I would say that more scenarios could be added such as sabotage, VIP assassination, etc. It would also be super cool if they added scenarios and rules for covert operations among crowds in broad daylight that required fighting only in alleys and backstreets away from the eyes of civilians.

Warsenal made a scenario that you could find interesting. It's more narrative than the average Infinity mission:

Either killing units for the sake of killing them or capturing and holding random victory points. Truth be told I think to the death, turn limit, or forfieture is the best method since that's how battles work, nobody high up gives a shit if you control say a hill or a building, they're simply tue means to an end.

Really the only case I can see narrative objectives making sense is smaller shit like "take this hill overlooking a city so we can bombard it" and even in those cases if you take the hill but are left with almost no soldiers, sitting on the hill, and surrounded you lost the battle since it's not like command is gonna drag artillery through enemy lines to the hill that's essentially besieged.

That's an innovation if GW's competitors that they stole. Wargaming as a sport isn't their fault, they're just the loudest voice in the throng.

And don't read this as any defense of GW, it's an attack on your own lack of critical thinking and pattern recognition.
