i'm getting a request for a star trek style game to run but i'm not really familiar with space travel games like that other than Traveller and Lancer. Its for a group of black people what wear leather jackets and want to be left alone if you catch my drift.

literally yes exactly this and they want to play star trek but
>one likes TOS
>one prefers TNG
>we have twins that keep crying about how the most underated show is Picard or Voyager and they both agree that discovery is actually based and SNW is also based
>i've only seen some TOS, Wrath of Khan, the 2 new movies, and episode one of Brave New Worlds so I'm worried I'll get it wrong
>also I want mecha because robots are cool

Unironically some anime vibes might well help, Cowboy Beebop + Star Trek vibes.
Give your ship a few mechs for space/harsh environment ops, but those are strictly* forbidden in cities and space stations, where you let social stats and hand-to-hand/gunslinging combat skills be the way to get through things.
*except when it's cool and dramatic, obviously. Keep it rare, it'll stay

I would run Lancer for them, then. It has the Star Trek vibes in "on the fringes of utopia" without being too tied to Star Trek. If you try to run Trek for a bunch of people who care about Trek more than you it will end badly as they'll know the canon more AND be more invested in it.

Plus, Lancer has cool mecha.

Lasers and Feelings? The system is dead simple and was made to play out the kind of interpersonal drama that defined Star Trek in general.

Look into a system called Space Kings. It's not exactly a deep system with great rules for spaceships, but I think it might thread the needle for that crowd of people with terrible taste.

Hey man, relax, no need to worry about getting it wrong. Hanging out with people like that says they wouldn't know wrong if it came up and bit them on the rear. They don't want to play Star Trek, they want nutrek. Worse visuals, recycled names, none of what made Trek good.

For years Voyager was the worst Trek-like show with a C grade crew at best where TOS and TNG and DSN were A grade. Picard lacks something even as basic as a coherent plot line or characters and they assassinated the greatness that was Capt. Picard. Maybe you could try watching the third series. You might as well shoot yourself rather than try to watch Discovery. That mutineering war-criming bitch should have been court-martialled. The death penalty was an option in the Federation and so the first episode should have ended with her execution. Brave New Worlds throws out almost all semblance Star Trek and instead is a soap opera made of high schoolers ruled by teenage emotions not by a sense of duty and the desire to explore strange new worlds, despite that being in the title. Like Voyager, you've got C grade crew despite Pike being A grade in TOS.

>the 2 new movies
2? Into Darkness and Beyond? Luckily you missed the 2009 film. The last film was tolerable, the first two were vapid and hollow incoherent messes where the "characters" were caricatures of the characters they were based on. Khan in particular was a mess. There was absolutely no reason to call that character Khan other than
>Hey, that's a word I know

Since what they want is nutrek, you can throw the worst PBTA at them and they'll suck it up like Luke swallows the blue milk.

The two who show good taste and intelligence, keep them and play Last Unicorn Game either the TOS or TNG since it did both eras well. With genuine Star Trek you can't easily hybridise the two eras unless you know them well.

Hey, fellow Lancerbros, nice.
There's a game being demo'd/beta tested on the Lancer official server called Far Field, which (from what I can tell) is about playing as Union Science Bureau explorers and problem-solvers. Might give that a look, see if the mechanics and setting (since it also has mechs via Lancer) work for your purpose.

However, if you can let go of the mecha, I have been told by multiple Trekkie friends that Star Trek Adventures from Modiphius is the best Trek RPG they've had. Modiphius also tends to have good books for grounding yourself in a given franchise's tone and lore. My own experience with the 2d20 books comes from their Conan line, which was excellent.
