Oh no! Your character has died. Quick! Come up with an excuse to introduce his replacement to the party.

It's the dead character's brother looking to avenge his brother's death and complete his work. There's a whole bunch of brothers there, and cousins, too, in case the brothers run out. They've all got quite a family resemblance going on, both in terms of appearance and personality, and similar skillset due to their shared background, too.

If the party aren't jackasses, they got captured and are found tied/locked up in whatever dungeon they're in. Otherwise, they're in said dungeon looking for a macguffin, potentially for a buyer/client.

>roll new character to be one of the guys in the group that captured them, work with the GM so my character is the guard keepin post in the cells.
>Play the part of a disillusioned member of the enemy group, trying to come up with a plan to fuck off when the group gets dragged into the cells
>wait some time and then talk to the party and get the ball rolling from there

I go with the classic. When they go to the church or whatever to bury the dead guy, the priest remarks that the area has become a hazard, and cites someone close to him dying earlier. Asks to join to help purify it.

Whether that's revenge, justice or the "i can't let more die" spiel, depends on char.

My new character was relentlessly hunting my previous character. Now that the previous character is dead my new one has to find some other way to get his revenge. He decides to join the party and be an even better party member, thus retroactively disgracing the first

I've got a hammer-wielding priest written up to take his place in the likely scenario he eats it, it's as simple as him walking up to the others and saying "I've heard of you, and I'm here to help your cause."

I will heal you and support you in your quest and swear to defend you with my life! Are you read to go or are you ready to go?"
If any negative reply comes, just reply with "But you must!"

During the next travel scene your wagon passes a woman walking the same road. Her clothes, once fine and of expensive make, are caked with mud and absolutely COVERED in blood, both old and fresh. She looks pale, exhausted, and she is dragging a wooden travel chest behind her by the side handle.
Wherever she is going, she looks determined as hell to get there.

My character is a doppleganger and has been tracking these adventurers for weeks. Taking the place of one of these fuckers should be easy, because these retards seem to let anyone join their group: I have seen this pattern countless times in the past:
1 one of them dies,
2 an almost exact copy of the previous dead guy turns up a minute or two later and is immediately accepted by the group as a trusted member, even though they have never met or seen him before.

It takse place wherever they are, in towns, in the coutryside, in caves, catacombs or deep in dungeons.

They don't question where the new guy comes from, quize him, or do detection magic to see if he is evil or anything, they just accept and trust the new stranger immediately, even giving the new guy all the old guys gear and treasure, FFS!

I will simply wait until another one dies, ambush and kill the new replacement before he gets to the group and then take his place, presenting myself as 'the new guy'. During the next 'Long Rest' (these idiots don't even post guards, they just flop down and all go commatose together!), I will kill and eat them all.

coincidentally, the baleful polymorph spell that you were unaware was affecting your donkey wears off.
that will be quite the conversation with the donkey vendor when you get back to town.
also there is now a naked man in your camp surrounded by your scattered cargo.
