Is there ever a point at which a character should retire and enjoy the loot theyโ€™ve obtained? Or is it an eternal treadmill where they adventure for more gold to take on even more dangerous dungeons? You donโ€™t seriously adventure to save the world right? Thatโ€™s so cringe.

Yes every PC that completes their goal of becoming a king/archmage/guildmaster or whatever should retire from adventuring. Then they can become the patrons that influence the next generation of PCs. Or even better you can run a Braunstein-like game when the patrons clash and the next generation of PCs can play in that conflict.

I know this isn't really the thread to look for homebrew, but has anyone ever come across something that could make a character that likes Two-Handers a bit more defense oriented?

I really hate how if you want to use any two hander, you get pigeonholed into into being a Striker/DPS and if you want to protect people you need to use shields.

Its pretty meaty but the campaign is pretty linear and oddly filled with way more human characters than I expected in contrast to when the book was describing all the unique regions.
What I find funny and distracting is the sheer amount of ripoffs in it
>race of Ratmen that are totally not skaven down to guilds of wacky engineering, assassins and Plague monks
>4 major enemies are League of Legends characters. Straight up Fiddle Sticks, Dr. Mundo, Tahm Kench but alligator man instead of fish, Yorick but he looks like Thrall from Warcraft
>the monster from the 2017 horror movie The Ritual
>subclasses include the plague monk, Witch Hunter Paladin and Grave Guard for Fighter all from Warhammer fantasy, Alchemist from Full Metal Alchemist

Those are the ones I instantly noticed, probably more. I will do a campaign next month, I wonder if my group will notice

Wizards and Sorcerers are both good choices, depends on what feel you want in play.

Sorcerers are pretty locked in on their spell lists, only adding more and getting a swap at level up, but can freely use Metamagic and can use the Innate sorcery feature that ups Spell DC and gives advantage on all attack roll spells for a minute. Plus access to the Sorcerous Burst cantrip, which gives access to throwing seven energy types in one spell and if you roll an 8 on the D8, extra dice for each 8 rolled up to your CHA mod. Plus each subclass gets tool powers, like Flight wings for Draconic, or being able to turn off Adv/Disadv for targets in range for Clockwork.

Wizards get more flexibility, as they can learn more spells, commit them to a spellbook, and then choose which to prepare each day, and can focus skills into one of the schools of magic.

>tried necromancer 2024 UA
>grim harvest
Starts stronger but scales worse
(Blight granting 9hp vs 12)
Ability to grant it to other people makes it a fair bit more flexible
Resistance to necrotic is super niche but nice to have

>undead thrall/grim power
Single handedly ruins the appeal of necromancer for me
One additional skelly per cast of animate dead + more hp per skelly vs one free cast of summon undead with half hitpoints and ignoring necrotic resistance

From a gameplay perspective, i can understand limiting minions to just 1 extra, and making your necrotic laser beams more consistent isnt that bad, but most people find being the minion master with an army of darkness to be the definitive necromancer over just a guy that shoots green rays of death and a single ghost
Skeleton army was always a headache for the DM, so they just gave up

>inured to death vs undeas secrets
Straight buff at level 10
Resistance to necrotic at a much later level compared to insurance against enemies focusing on the caster
Reducing max hp was situatuonal in 2014, so no one is gonna miss immunity to it

>command undead vs deaths master
2024 givea your undead horde free temp hp, which sounds good, but 2014 just gave higher base HP back at level 6
Advantage on attack rolls or saving throws for one turn helps make your baseline skeletons useful against high CR threats, but its only one turn out of a 24 hour day

Command undead let you temporarily steal someone elses undead, which could be really useless or way too strong depending on what the DM brought today

>TLDR
Necromancer has more focus on consistency and a slight dip in support
But loses out on the main thematic draw of being lord of undead

Most certainly a result of necromancy being C-tier in 2014 while also making it a headache for the the DM
>townsfolk run in terror when necromancer rolls in to town
>make 8 attack rolls every time the skeletons attack
>make saving throws for every single skeleton

because this game is garbage and dead
everyone playing it has been hating the stupidity for 10 years and after a whole year of "something better is coming" they end up making 2 steps back for every step forward. And it's very clear their plans moving forward are to release more garbage whose sole purpose is to exist as DLC/skin packs for their walled garden vtt. Just steal Shield of Swings from Pathfinder. At the start of your turn you can do half damage with your melee strikes with a two handed sword. If you do you get +4 AC. Maybe drop it to +2 for 5e. It'd be kinda shit especially cause that'd make it worse than sword and shield (anyone who says "sword and b*ard" is a subhuman homosexual) but you could probably make it work somehow by adjusting the damage penalty from half to make just -2.

Honestly though I'm still believing I'm entitled to a combat expertise feat that lets me take -2 to hit for +2 AC but WotC is scared of static bonuses....unless of course they can't think of anything else, then its ok.

Nova isn't a zoomer term, retards. It's from Champions. Dates back to at least 2013 in D&D (cite: https://dnd4.fandom.com/wiki/Nova?oldid=10056 ), and even further back in other TTRPGs - here's someone using it in 2003: https://www.herogames.com/forums/topic/7991-buffing-up-the-champions/#comment-213808 , with the modern meaning.

The etymology is via the Human Torch's nova flame (a high intensity blast that he can't maintain long) -> Champions parlance (as it is a superhero game where you can make such powers) -> filtering down to D&D-playing subhumans like yourselves. Not everything you heard of for the first time recently is new, you retarded apes.

Ranger isn't weak, it's just boring and not well put together mechanically or thematically, especially compared to paladin or warlock.

>beeg damage
DEX main
>weapon mastery: doesn't matter
subclass: hunter with colossus slayer
its 1d8 with no action required, only that the target not be at full health, hunter's mark makes it another 1d6 for one big attack that is something like 1d6+2d8+dex
>lots of damage
There are two ways to do lots of damage

>DEX main
>subclass: doesn't matter
>fighting style: two weapon fighting
>weapon mastery: nick, scimitar
you get an action attack and an extra attack with your nick weapon using the same action, both attacks on the same target with hunter's mark is 4d6+(double dex)
>4th level feat: dual wielder
you can now make an extra attack with your bonus action for three attacks that each deal 1d6+dex, if that target has hunter's mark already, like a boss, that's 6d6+triple dex
>5th level, extra attack
you get another attack, that makes 4 attacks, you get the deal.

The other is a STRranger.
>STR main
>weapon mastery, great axe for cleave
>subclass: hunter, taking horde breaker
you get one melee attack if another enemy is nearby, you make a horde breaker attack agaisnt that other enemy, then you cna make a weapon mastery cleave against teh first target, making 2 attacks for 1d12+STR and a third for 1d12,
>4th level: great weapon master
if you kill something, or get a crit, you get a bonus action attack for 4 possible attacks
>5th level, extra attack

Also, you have a lot of spells that have utility, and due to 2024, you now have ritual casting, so you can ritual cast a lot of the spells a ranger would find useful like locate object, speak with animals etc. so take those spells.

tehgreen spells are spells you get as a ranger, the yellow spells are only available if you take the magic initate feats from your background.

I get that focusing on mechanics is exciting as a new player, but there is more to the game than that. Having a character who can get narratively hooked into the adventure is a lot more engaging than being a snowflake race able to heal an ally or set someone on fire just because a gooner angel/fiend creampied your slut of a great grandmother.

>I see, its just that if I go into melee mode I put myself at a high risk of attacks that can take out my concentration spells
Yep. But that's not really an issue, your spells aren't that good, and you're going to spend your action attacking. You get free casts of hunter's mark as well so you're not losing spell slots for losing concentration.
>and I don't have much hp, neither
Did you roll bad for ability scores adn HP or something? barbs have a d12 hit die, fighters, paladins, and rangers tie for 2nd at a d10, then bards, clerics, monks, rogues and warlocks with a d8. and they wizards and sorcerers have a d6

You should be on the higher side for HP on your group.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I was just focusing a lot on the Mark of Hunter, but it doesn't matter much if I lose it + I can use it for free twice at level 3. it doesn't seem so bad when you put it that way.
For now, the Ranger is much more Meelee than I expected. In my mind, I pictured him as a guy with a bow and shooting explosive arrows, lol.
I'm really liking the ranger's versatility: spells, rituals, capable of fighting at long and short distances.

Weapon mastery is pretty important. You get two.

>Shortbow: Vex, d6
if you hit, your next attack has advantage, which means you're rolling 2 d20s and taking the higher roll. It massively increases your odds of hitting and even getting a critical hit. And your hit that had advantage also make the next attack have advantage.
>Longbow: slow, d8
It lets you control enemy speed by reducing it by 10ft. If every enemy has 20 speed and you have 30, an enemy is never gonna catch you or your allies they can dash to get to you, but that means they spend their action moving instead of attacking and it's also one of the strongest ranged weapons
>sling: slow
The same as before, but this is bludgeoning instead of piercing which seldom matters, but it could.
>Heavy crossbow: push, d10
You need a feat to be able to make more than one attack per turn (not relevant till lvl 5), you can ask your DM to explain more about that, but being able to push an enemy is great, you can knock people away from you, push them away from allies, push people off of towers or over railings etc. and it deals the most damage of any ranged simple or martial weapon aside from fire arms.

With the colossus hunter ranger
>attack1: d10+d8+d6+dex
>attack2: d10+d6+dex
If you wanna be super versatile, take heavy crossbow for a weapon mastery, and scimitar with the archery fighting style.

>fire your crossbow as a main
>if an enemy comes into melee with you you can either blast people away with push and retreat
>or mark them with hunter's mark and make two attacks for 4d6+dex, more if you have colossus slayer

>all mass summons create an aoe that you can move as a BA
>forces a save 1/turn when a creautre enters or ends its turn there, or the aoe ents their space
>conjure animals does BPS, and the target is prone
>animate dead does necrotic, and the target is frightened for 1 round
>woodland beings does psychic, and the target is charmed and confused (as Confusion) for 1 round
>minor elementals does acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder, and the effect is based on the damage
>Acid: blinded for 1 round
>Cold: speed halved for 1 round
>Fire: burning (as alchemist's fire) for 1 minute
>Lightning: dazed (as mind whip) for 1 round
>Thunder: deafened and can't take reactions for 1 minute (save ends)
>giant insects does acid, piercing or poison. Enemies in the area are blinded, and can't take actions with their voice
>animate objects deals BPS, and the creature is restrained for 1 minute (save ends). Allies in the area have a hover speed, and you can move them when you move the aoe

I believe this was always something you could do with 5e 2014 fast hands as well? Doesn't make the feature completely useless if your dm hands you magic items with activate. Being able to be the only guy who can throw stuff as a bonus was the main appeal though, wish they'd gotten something more to compensate for it.

No, that was explicitly and deliberately not the case.

The new version of the thief's fast hands makes it clear they can use magic items as a bonus action, like scrolls and wands.

So for level 3 it would be something like this with a scimitar and a short sword.
Attack: 2d6 (weapon) + 2d6 (Hunter's Mark) + 1d8 (colossus slayer) + (double DEX)
>Level 4
Attack: 3d6 (weapon) + 3d6 (hunter mark) + 1d8 + (colossus) + (triple dex)

Attack: 3d6 (weapon) + 3d6 (hunter mark) + 1d8 + (colossus) + (triple dex)
Attack 2: 1d6 (weapon) + 1d6 (Hunter's Mark) + 1d8 (colossus slayer) + (dex)
If so, then I should now focus on utility spells, especially those that can be used in ritual.

Oh this was supposed to be my first PHB, I just got into DnD 2 weeks ago playing the Essentials Kit with some friends.

I'm kinda on the fence in the sense that I'm already someone who likes collecting books, and I could've seen myself collecting tons of DnD shit, but I'm starting to feel that maybe like the DnD system but not really the aesthetic if you know what I mean? The steampunk stuff, the all-hold-hands-around-the-rainbow kind of art, etc.

When I started reading up on DnD I thought it was kinda cringe that the game is played with so many house rules and homebrewed stuff; if you have to make so many changes to the game, is it even a good game? But I think I'm starting to get it now. The DnD rules seem to create a game that's not really about anything but which you can use to do whatever you want, so you just have to homebrew and houserule yourself to the playstyle, story and aesthetic you like.

In a way though I wish I was more of a normie who could just buy all the books and be happy, you know?

5e is fun because you can make it a lot of things. It's popular and there are a lot of resources available. It also dominates the Youtube scene, and people covering other games are left in the dust. It's somewhat simple for the more casual player, but it also has just enough teeth for autists to dig into. The system itself has a lot of flaws which have been discussed to death, and the 2024 "refresh" has been very controversial among the community.

The biggest danger of getting into DND 5e with friends is that once people take the time to actually learn the system, they get complacent and don't want to branch out to other TTRPGs.

If you don't like the art direction of the new book, you could pick up the 2014 copies. You can get these gift sets used for $80-100 usually. The only issue being some of these books are of dubious value, I'm not a huge fan of the DMG or Xanathar's. And the new monster manual will be cleaning up some of the issues with the old one, supposedly.
