Damn looks like NH is eternally fucked now, the supplements are written after the tomes so they're fully aware of how shit they are and they still double down on eviscerating the cairn wraith and upping the SoG coach points.

I doubt the fuckwad that wrote the rules is going anywhere before 6e so 5e probably going to be just as excellent, maybe they'll promote him to lead creative if he isn't already.

Hard to feel Nostalgic, I got into this shit a few years back through Underworlds. Until then I spent most of my time being one of those shitters "Ah man I wouldn't touch Age of Smegmar, they killed fantasy for this slop?" Give it a few years, then I'll tell ya how nostalgic I feel.

So Drachenfells using the power of curses and science creates his own death faction.

It's pretty bog standard stuff, the coolest thing is the melee scroll for the construct fights twice every combat phase but honestly can't remember if it's once per turn army. On the flipside it only has 4 attacks when it's not given any buffs, so it's more of a grinder unit with 2+ save 10 health.

Outside of that I can't remember anything remarkable about the tome but I'm also generally not a fan of 4e.

If you have a bigger mustache than your opponent, at the start of the game roll a d3, on a 2+ you can spend a command point and deal d3 damage to one target in the 2nd phase of the game (once per army)

They're alright, but they're insanely expensive and shit in game like you said. To each their own but I always thought the forgeworld take on them was ugly as fuck, though maybe that's just the signature forgeworld grimy-ness of the resin. The bull centaur someone posted earlier especially looks horrendous, though the kdaai are probably even worse. I do like the warmachines, since that weird grimyness kinda fits, and drazhoath also looks quite cool. Not a massive fan of nuchorfs either, wish they went closer to the oldchorf aesthetic. Necromancy is a perversion of shyishian magic, it twists the natural cycle of life and death. It’s not dhar or whatever like WHF, but an unnatural corruption of amethyst magic defined by crossing that line of not respecting death as an inevitable finality. Nagash brought it to the mortal realms where it hadn’t existed before (though people had probably independently discovered it at various points, like some of the last remaining Draconith did, but there was no conception of it as a widespread or well established thing) and spread it around to people.

The Archaon thing is killer. The designers are in no way really constrained by some faggot 'metaplot'; GW focuses on cool models FIRST and writes to explain them within the setting. Something as strange as Archaon's horse just missing a head of a chaos god would only happen if the designer was straight up told to NOT include a Slaanesh head.

Why would you care even the slightest bit about your list's win rates, much less win rates for individual units, which is a beyond fucking useless statistic? No unit exists in a vacuum, and a unit with an awful winrate might be excellent in the correct list, and a unit that wins a lot might be dependent on other specific meta choices. It also doesn't seem to account for the unit being reinforced or not, which can drastically change the purpose of a unit in the list. And it doesn't seem to be actual list win rates, but army win rates, which makes it even more useless, because some armies can be wildly different (like a regular khorne army and a gorechosen khorne army are going to be completely different lists, but there they fall under the same winrate).

nta but why is it difficult to believe he's seen the tome and he's not a fan of it? I've seen it and it's just okay in terms of mechanic creep. I do like that bookkeeping is starting to come back into the game in some amount, the daemon points are kind of a combination of aetherquartz (tokens assigned per unit) and the DoK mechanic (the effects get stronger the more you put on them). The desolation token you put on a terrain you control, and you get the sum of them in daemon point tokens at the start of the turn. So you have a pool of daemon points that grows through the game, and at the start of the turn you get to redistribute them to different units and they get different effects based on warscroll (gunners gain a rend per point, spearmen ward saves go up etc).

Yes, it's good. I've played something fairly similar, just swapping the chosen out for some darkoath. The main thing you need to make sure you do is get a charge off with the knights, it can very easily be backbreaking for your opponent at 1k if you deliver the lord and knights into an important target, they hit very, very hard together. Give the lord the fight twice trait and make him your apotheosis target and it's very possible he'll get a full heal (or daemon prince transformation, but it barely makes him any better) in a single turn of ramming into an enemy objective with his knights. The warriors and chosen basically do the same thing, but don't be afraid to sacrifice the warriors to hold something dangerous in place for your knights to get into position, they'll survive a round of combat with most things, especially if warded up by the sorcerer. Your lose cases are your generally very slow army getting outmanouvered and kept from fighting on objectives (this army is very fighy, but very slow and you have basically no movement tricks, to the point that you'll probably want to consider giving at least one unit mark of tzeentch at some point) so you'll want to focus on getting to objectives with your slower units and trying to keep the knights from getting bogged down, they do way, way less damage off the charge.

Ogroids are good, they basically play the same role as chosen in the army in that they're a very hard-hitting brick (especially when using their once per game). You can do a cool thing with them using the scourge of ghyran thingy that gives all the non-heavy armor units a 6+ ward with 12 to the myrmidon and then slapping Mark of Nurgle on the ogroids for an absolute brick of a unit, a 6-man is 30 wounds on a 4+/5++ that hit like (inaccurate) trucks.
I doubt most people would even care to tell the difference between bloodreavers and darkoath, as long as you use the correct bases. But darkoath aren't necessary to use for StD unless you like them. Having some chaff can be nice but the heavy plate units are so tough on their own that they can often just absorb a brutal hit anyway.

fec have a wonderful gimmick that turns the underwhelming concept and design of the models taken at a face value on their heads in a greatly imaginative and ever amusing way.

night goblins on the other hand have pretty much perfect base designs for goblins and as goblins they're normally evergreen and entertaining.

the thing they have in common is that they're allowed to be fuckups, they're allowed to be losers, they're allowed to not be perfectly logical or sound, and that means that whatever they end up doing rarely taints or devalues them, while often adding little by little to their cumulative charm.

Health on its own isn't much of a Stat like it is in 40k because aos has spillover damage, so if something doesn't have more health for fewer points or better saves with that higher health, then it's no more durable than chaff, with the exception of vs hordebuster effects and spells, which are very rare

expanding on this, the reason models with higher health are generally viewed as tougher in other systems like 40k or ToW is because they usually also come paired with higher toughness, and damage doesnt spill over so in 40k for example it can end up wasting some of the damage of multi damage weapons if they are a bad match against the specific health values of the target unit (damage 2 weapons into 3 health models for example)

in age of sigmar those levers of toughness and health to damage thresholds dont exist, so if you want a model to be tougher, it needs to be either saves, wards, hit/wound penalties, "cannot wound on better than X" type effects and so on

but as far as durability goes, 400points worth of steelhelms and 400pts worth of megagargants are pretty much the same, probably even a little tougher on the steelhelms. the only thing the larger model has over the mass of smaller ones is that it doesnt lose damage with as much granularity as it loses health compared to a horde of guys, but that difference is pretty negligible when you're talking about 1 health vs 4 health models, it only really gets meaningful at the monster scale where something can be 10-14 health down without having lost much damage

Cool image, I grouped them together in factions out of interest. Some things of note:
-Stormies at the top with 8 (!). why the fuck do they have two nearly identical sacrosanct bands.
-gitz and sbgl in second place if you count the two weird zombie warbands with 5. If you count all orcs together and remember that hedkrakka exists they also get to 5. then a bunch of 4's (DoK, skaven, khorne, NH)
-khorne definitely gw's favourite of the big four when it comes to UW.
-fyreslayers, kharadron, chorfs (duh) , OBR and surprisingly lumineth at only 1 warband. rough out there for the dwarfs. Beasts used to be here too
-Sons of Behemat the only ones missing afaik

The truth is that Warhammer has never truly unequivocally formalised how souls work, even in the one book written as Manfred's own understanding of undeath.

As far as we know, souls leave the body on death unless proper funerary rites are done, and when the soul leaves the body it may remain stuck on the physical plane, make its way into an underworld, or be swept up by the currents of the realm of chaos and be consumed, either by gradually losing its identity until it dilutes back into the baseline nothingness of the realm of souls, or by getting preyed upon by a demonic entity, or by conjoining with other souls like it in a god; rarely, if ever, it may get a chance to reincarnate.
BUT all of this assumes that the soul is an indivisible unit, but we've seen souls split, or get split into its different constituents, which the nehekarans identified and manfred somewhat agreed with.
these components being:
the soul fire
the moral compass
the consciousness
the subconscious
the true name
the literal body
the literal shadow

with this in mind it is perfectly possible for a soul to be split in half by desecrating or traumatic magic and create a situation where someone's emotional "echo" might wander the world or an underworld or the realm of chaos as a ghost at the same time as that same being's conscious spirit half
and that is before we invoke the bullshit that is time flowing in absurd ways in the realms of the dead and the gods, which would even allow someone to commune with their own future dead self
