The problem at gw isn't similar units in multiple systems, it's the actual identical products shared between different systems.
The horus heresy has its own leman russ tank kit, so it's kosher.

But 40k will eventually remake the leman russ, make it rounded, remove 70% of the weapon options, and rump up its price.

It was a bit tricky, like the parts to make up the upper body and get them to align properly. But it's not super terrible.

One advice I will give is that, if you get it, do paint it in sub assemblies.
Like paint the body and limbs separate, same with the head.

I want to start a Space Marine army and I'm trying to decide which box set to start with. I don't want the BT, SW, or BA boxes, because those have too many Chapter specific units. So I've narrowed my options down to these four boxes

Which would you guys recommend as a start?

I should say, I've never played 40k before but I do have a lot of experience building and painting models, including Warhammer ones

Dark Angels one is weird, you get 10 intercessors, which is always nice. Hellblasters come in 10 so they split the box to give you five. Bladeguard are fun to field, but then there's a Gravis Captain that you can't attach anything to.
I'm not sure about the Salamander one as well, unless you're interested in the named character you can grab infernus marines for cheap on eBay or something. The ATV model looks like shit as well.

I've not even really put this model together yet (or cleaned moldlines), got Blu-tak holding most of it together. The idea is to stack some hover stems and have my Archon leaning off of the floating piece (end of a raider) with the spear and the tip embedded in a Space Marine that stays on the 'normal' base. Based on the angles and my ability to lower or raise the height the Archon's at, I can make it go for a chest blow or an eye blow.

I'm thinking a super gory chest explosion doesn't fit for a normal spear, so maybe just have it go right through a helmet's eye? It's probably the right height.

If you want the full history you should start with the horus heresy series but I warn you while some books are great some really suck, but it gives you all the context for how the imperium is set up in 40k.
You can also just skip it entirely if you don't care about space marines and dive into the Eisenhorn books which are widely considered a good entry to the 40k universe because it provides a lot of exposition to many factions and their relationships. Its set up as a detective series so its a slow burn.
If that doesn't sound up your alley then I would highly recommend the Ciaphas Cain books. They strike a great balance between narrative story telling, exposition, humor, and drama. It's all from the perspective of an Imperial guard Commissar.
If you just want to get into the thick of space marine combat I woule recommend Hellsreach which is Black Templars vs Orks or Devastation of Baal which is Blood Angels vs Tyranids.

Thanks man, I did add a step to see if I could keep it simple since I tend to try and paint quick, from darkest to lightest it's now: washed dragon's gold>dragon's gold>glistening gold. Not perfect yet but I'm getting the hang of it. On bigger stuff like vehicles I plan to add some mixtures between these steps since there's gonna be a lot more surface to work with.

No I hate to break it to you, but I burned out of painting miniatures so I picked up another hobby to get into drawing, at least until I feel the itch to paint minis again. My problem is that I only get inspiration from 40k so my brain as the kids say is "brainrotted" by Warhammer. It is either Warhammer or attempts at anime girls, and I'm not even that good of an artist. Like not even beginner level. I only picked it up recently.
