Tried asking this in the solo thread, forgot to ask here. Anyways: thinking of playing hunter the vigil. I really dig the whole wandering monster hunter vibe, modern-day witcher kind of thing. But I’ve heard the game leans more into investigation and mystery, and that the combat system’s pretty deadly and not all that exciting. From what I gather, fights usually come down to: figure out the monster's weakness, prep like hell, and then either you stomp the monster or get stomped. Is that about right? I’m cool with that for big, dangerous stuff, but I also want to actually throw down with monsters sometimes. Scrappy, close-up fights that could go either way, not just surgical takedowns. Is that something the system supports, or would I need to hack it (or maybe look at a different game) to get that kind of action?
Anonymous No.96476212 [Report] >>96478698
>>96475993

Vigil is fine for that. A character with decent combat stats won't get stomped unless he does something pretty stupid or is hunting more esoteric stuff without preparations. In other words, a shotgun will take care of most of your problems with enough shells, and the rest need custom shells.

As far as making combat more interesting, there is Hurt Locker for combat rules variations, if the baserules don't gell with you.

Usually fade to black. A general description if something occurs in the middle of the act - noticing an odd detail or bad guys booting in the door. Mostly I'll just end up doing a raunchy sketch if something in game inspired me.

Like the other guy said, Vigil's combat isn't terribly deep but if you build a head on fighter and don't act stupid/unprepared, you can get away with some scrapping. HL does have other options. In fact sometimes melee combat specifically can turn into whiff wars depending on how the characters are built

If you want some quick combat hacks for CofD that my group enjoyed
>no athletics to defense, makes melee combat more reliable as a PC option but also more dangerous. (I strongly recommend this one as it makes called shots in melee actually viable, and called shots/tilts are the based part of core CofD combat for me.)
>add exceptional success effects for things like attack rolls
>allow characters to use their movement rather than action to swap weapons; encourages more weapon variety

You mentioned the solo thread. Is this for a solo game? If so I'd also suggest:
>give the character extra exp before play. I'd suggest 25-50 depending on how elite you want them to be. Opens up a lot of fighting styles.
>look at the endowments Hunters in Conspiracies get, Endowments can be huge equalizers with supernaturals.
>consider having NPC allies.

I ran GTSE and expected it to be very stand battle esque. Those did happen but it was actually the most dialogue heavy game I think I have ever ran. It got very character drama at points.

Not really. Both are basically just about groups of people fighting other people using similar but bad versions of their own powers to help other people. Which is what Geist is really. Although it might be more Deviant's deal overall as that one leans more into super heroey types.
Anonymous No.96477046 [Report]

Depends.
Clans? No, the 13 will be the 13
Bloodlines? Yes, I've made plenty of those myself, and if one of my players has a cool idea for one, we work together to adapt it.
Disciplines? No
Gifts and Totems? Absolutely, limiting yourself only to the ones in the books for those is silly. I've accidentally given out some overpowered or underpowered ones, but c'est la vie, I'd rather things go wrong occasionally than rely on the book to the letter.
I've also homebrewed a lot of stuff for demon, because only having fallen and earthbound is way too limiting for adapting different kinds of demons.
For one, I made custom type of demon that operates like the demons from It Follows and Smile. For two, I've made rules for demons possessing animals. For three, I've created other demon 'loadouts' of lore that fit more for particular mythological/legendary demons.

Mages can have anything, it's just a matter of having the right Spheres or freebies allocated to Wonder Background, and being a rootless orphan without Mentor, Library or Grimoire benefits if they want to have a weird Paradigm.

Fera may be given custom Gifts and follow custom Totems, as long as they're balanced and players can persuade the spirit in question.

No custom bloodlines: Masquerade has way more than it needs already, and near any Discipline concept already has a fitting Path.

Guyver doesn't really have much in terms of drawbacks for someone who's had a Guyver suit bonded to them. As long as their Control Metal is intact they're basically immortal and have far better weapons than Activated humans in Zoanoid/Hyper Zoanoid form.

Even for Activated humans their only real weakness is that they're subject to mind control from Zoalords.

The stuff with the Guyver Suits was also why the aliens simply abandoned their uplift project on Earth, because aside from making humans way more dangerous than intended, their "standard issue" spaceflight equipment also removed the mind control.

It's a very C-tier movie, but Universal Soldier is pretty straight-up a Deviant setup, with the Powers of being stronger and regenerating balanced with "gotta go in a freezer once in a while" Scar.

They don't really have "schools" for them. Each one is sent to a different "foster home" to be instructed in the ways of the Wyrm and to develop their powers and refine their nature to better serve the Wyrm in the future.
As for dealing with them, any proper Garou would have one response: you kill them. Each and every one of them is a genocide waiting to happen, a planetary extinction, and an infectious wound in Gaia.

>what edition is the best for newbies?
V20 a.k.a. VtM 20th Anniversary Edition
or
V5 a.k.a. VtM 5th Edition

V20 is out of print but PDFs can be had everywhere. It’s the older version of the game. It’s more full featured, but the older system is much crunchier and, with decades of supplements in it, it’s got balance issues.

V5 is the current version, if your players actually want to buy the books. The system and the setting have been simplified and streamlined. If you’ve never played before, you won’t notice, but veteran players typically prefer V20 because that’s what they’re used to.

FWIW, don’t say you like anything V5 in this general. In fact, don’t mention V5 at all. There’s no need to bring down that kind of heat on yourself over a game.

V20. It's a beast of a corebook but virtually everything you need in one book and the PDF version has pretty reasonable links so finding things isn't too much of a chore.

I think you have to take it on a case by case basis.
I’ve taught dozens of people to play TTRPGs and there’s no consistency with how they pick up the game.
Brand new people will need to be taught the entire idea behind, say, rolling a skill check; while people who have a background in other games like 40k or even just read a lot of fantasy/sci-fi may pick up on it quicker.

A simple system may get those new players interested and, as soon as they get to the point where they try to do something that the simple ruleset can’t account for, you know they are ready for a more complex game.

Similarly, some people just like a simple ruleset. I’m sure we’ve all experienced combats in v20 that took hours of constant rolling. Some of us find that really exciting. Some of use would rather be playing craps if it’s just going to be hours of rolling.

As another anon says, a lot of the europe lore is more medieval than modern. Modern is going to have a lot of vague lore and canon princes with like two paragraphs of lore on them tops. that and personally, I don't like a lot of official city lore myself. Rage Across Russia is a total mess of a book, and not just because it's cross-splat.

My advice is pick a place, see if there's anything official on it (the wiki can be good for finding basic lore and the sources for it), decide if anything is worth keeping, and then start building out your city. If you're a local to the area, odds are you'll probably have a more comprehensive view of the locale and its character than anyone who wrote the official stuff. There's an image floating around somewhere from the Revised ST guide about how the writers themselves say you can ignore and write over their official lore and OCs, or even kill them as a plot point if you want.

I took a look at the new Curseborne Primal revision. The original rules for them all but killed my interest in the game. You had a chunk of fera who all had the same crinos, and the crinos was less interesting than glabro. Now everyone gets a generic list of 6 traits, and another from their family, and you pick 2 from each. There is also a soft rage mechanic

All get these, and enhancement is extra successes when you roll at least 1, and tricks are stunts you can spend extras on
>+1 Enhancement that stacks on all physical actions
>+1 Enc. that stacks on all influence actions relating to intimidation
>+1 Enc. that stacks to defensive actions
>Regenerate 1 injury at the end of the round, unless it came from an attack using the Magical tag or spells
>Any of the four above shifts applied a second time
>Distraction is also an Influence Trick

As an example the spider/insects get this list
>Establish Grapple is also a Ranged Combat Trick
>1 natural armor (Padded ×1, Spiked)
>Unarmed attacks have the Elemental Attunement: Darkness and Poisoned tags
>Vision is unimpeded in the Darkness area effect
>Combat Trick: Impose Darkness (2 hits): Upon dealing 1 injury to an adversary, apply the Darkness area effect, an unnatural nightfall centering on the target
>Climb sheer surfaces at normal movement speed

And the wolf/canines get this
>Knockdown/Trip is also an Influence Trick
>1 natural armor (Elemental Resistance: Electricity, Padded ×1)
>Unarmed attacks have the Elemental Attunement: Electricity and Wounding tags
>The Imprint Influence Trick has a reduced cost of 1 hit
>Combat Trick: Impose Storm (2 hits): Upon dealing 1 injury to an adversary, apply the Extreme Weather area effect, a storm centering on the target
>Move from close to medium range as a reflexive action

I'm not sure it's as interesting as 5 bespoke forms but if I read it right you can pick new traits each time, and spend more resource to change them while in that form. So it's quite a different vibe at least

Sure. My general process for vampire is pick the city, research it, then start from the top down. Start with the Prince (or other top vampire), since while the Prince probably won't reflect the modern character of a given city due to their age, their will and character helps form the culture of the vampires in their city. Even a weak Prince defines the city through their weakness and being ruled by their court rather than the other way around. Some Princes fit their cities very well, others are deliberately incongruous. Pretentiousness aside, after I'm done with the Prince I fill out the court. First the Primogen council, then the specialist positions like Seneschal, Sheriff, etc. I spend a lot of time on their history, how they came into the positions, and their relationships with each other since almost all of the politics of the city will be downwind from that. During this process I like to deliberately ask myself if they should be the clan most typically associated with the position, (primogen excepted obviously) and if not, why? Ex: Is the Prince a Ventrue? If I say no to that, I ask myself why, just to mentally check myself to make sure I have a good reason to break from the default. There's nothing wrong with breaking from the default, but I think you should have a good reason for it, otherwise the default ceases to mean anything.

From there, I try to have at least one lower level vampire of every Cam 7 clan, preferably more since the PCs probably won't start by interacting directly with the power players in the city. I like to have a handful of vampires of other clans/bloodlines, but only a handful save designated antagonists.

Lastly, I like to do the mortals. Random civilians for flavor, a detective or two if they fuck up, some local unghouled prominent people. After this I do any antagonists, but honestly I'm more comfortable with making them up as I go. In fact, I like to make them up later so they can bounce off my PCs better.

Different guy here, but how do all these NPCs come up organically in play? I'm a pretty new player, I'm in a VTM game, and all the NPC interactions feel "forced" to me. Like we're called to see the Prince every session, and we have to get info from the Nosferatu where to go next all the time. And I'm pretty sure the latter is not our fault for being stupid, there's literally no other way to get info, whenever we try investigating, it's like a point and click game, where the main character goes "I can't do that right now". I kinda feel the whole game is really just the ST trying to show off the NPCs.
Anonymous No.96480582 [Report]
>>96480169
If I have to give one advice, to a semi-experienced ST, it would be that Princes are the key.

Overall, there are 3 different Princes.

Strongest: Guys who don't have a Primogen Council or have one just to have one. They are the law, whatever they say happens. They are strong enough to do whatever they want. Not even Elders of their city can go against their wishes and live to tell the tale. Most of the time, these kinds of Princes are in Europe and the Middle East. The best example is Mithras.
Typical: These Princes are strong but not strong enough to bypass other powerful vampires. They and their Council rule together. Most Princes are in this category.
Weak: As the name suggests, weak Princes. They are usually the puppet of their Primogen Council. They are a figurehead and can be replaced at the whims of the Council or the powerplays between Council members.

This is important because it sets the bedrock of your City for the vampires. Everyone is affected by the Prince, whatever they like it or not.

>Like we're called to see the Prince every session, and we have to get info from the Nosferatu where to go next all the time.
Not to be rude, but that's just a skill issue on your ST's part. You're being railroaded.

The NPCs come up organically when you put in the effort to consider the wider context. Let's take a very simple set-up. The Toreador Primogen wants his childer found, apparently they've gotten a wild hair and rumor has it that they're slumming it in the bad part of town with some wannabe Anarchs. He's asking you because this is beyond ghoul work, and stresses the importance of discretion. Maybe the PCs go to the Nosferatu for info, they probably won't be dealing with the Primogen himself, but a Nosferatu of similar age to them. They'll be able to get a lot of info, but there's a caveat, it's hard to get any info without exposing the Toreador in this. Depending on how much you give up, the Nosferatu might be poking around the Toreador in question and/or the Primogen, or a vicious new rumor might start swirling around Elysium. In the case of the latter, now you've made an enemy of the Toreador Primogen even if you did what he said, because now the filthy sewer rats are spreading rumors about him and his childer. Say you don't go that route, look around the "bad part of town". You might run into an overzealous Brujah that threatens you for coming onto his turf. Maybe you get into a fight, might need to explain that to the sheriff later. Maybe you talk him down, and he tells you where the childer is because you're cool.

Before this example gets too long and I hit the character limit, it's all about running games in a more "reactive" mindset. You may provide the initial prompt, but you're mostly adjusting to how the players handle things. By having a city will many NPCs with established relations, that becomes much easier. You know how the NPCs will react, and how they'll react to each other's reactions.

I've not played with it but I like the system enough from I'll give it a go when the game is out. I don't have the best handle on it yet but I can explain any terms you want

I do like most of what I've seen though, Dice rolling seems like it's somewhere between the two where 8+ is a success but there is task difficulty to set the amount you need. Bonuses to them are extra successes rather than extra dice. There is a good amount of social/non-combat rules which I like to see. They seem decent enough too. Antagonists are all template based, and equipment is all tag based, so there is a lot of customisation of that stuff. Damage is all pretty flat though which I don't think is going to feel super engaging. It doesn't look like it's got all the hoops you need to jump through of oWoD or CofD so I expect I'll play smoother but I'm not sure if that makes it more fun until I've played it. The magic system is fun looking too. Every splat gets 15 spells in three and each spell has a few ways you can upgrade it. It's a good variety of stuff from the looks of it but I never delved too deep because the old primal rules were bad enough that I didn't really care.

A mage with Life 5 can provide far better permanent enhancements, assuming he pushes himself to improve that far and survives long enough. Just reinforcing your Pattern should be doable with Prime 5 as well.

With Mages merits are a matter of getting things here and now, before you start, as opposed to developing far enough to just be able to take what you want. A more expensive, way more limited immediate benefit that gives you some survival insurance but costs you your precious headstart in terms of Arete, Mentor, Library and other progression advantages.

How exactly do Vampires stay Christian in undeath? Like the Cappadocians are straight-up necromancers, how can they still maintain a Christian faith when they’re desecrating and animating corpses? In terms of raw fighting I don't think Geralt is actually that cooked. Thing is, while it's often discussed at length due to being something that's easy to measure in a semi-objective fashion, who wins in a direct, head on fight isn't the meta. Problem is his established "got stabbed by a pitchfork because I hesitated to kill a normie teenager" weakness is going to be easily exploited by any vampire with a welterweight amount of Dominate or Presence (or other supernatural with similar powers). Dozens of mind controlled innocents with guns? Geralt doesn't have a good answer to that. He thrives in running 1v1s with dangerous monsters.

So even if Geralt with his silver sword, superhuman reflexes, and potions so powerful they'd kill a lesser man could utterly dumpster things way "stronger" than the aforementioned vampire, he'd flounder with the many denizens who hide embedded in society and work heavily through innocent proxy. On the plus side, he doesn't kill supernatural creatures because they're supernatural, only if they are hurting people. So that might limit his hostile contact with some supernaturals.

ok Baali.

Serious answer though? Mix of cope and Job (the guy in the bible). Being embraced should shake your faith in whatever religion you held when you were alive. Here's this evil, omnipresent threat that's all around mortals, God's children, sucking the lifeblood out of them, and God's own word failed to mention that very real threat? But it's not as if various Christian sects haven't tackled the problem of evil before, you'd need to re-adjust them for the new info of active supernatural evil existing on earth and a seeming lack of angels protecting us... but you could still do it.

Especially since faith, especially in those times, was lived. When we talk about how everyone was Christian in the middle ages, we might assume that everyone was akin to a modern bible thumper. But they weren't. Most people don't think about their faith too hard the same way people in secular countries don't think too hard about the political theory and philosophy that underpins their nation state and culture.

And many do lose their faith entirely even in that time (Road of Heaven is but one of many back in medieval europe), but those who hold to it cling to it the same way a modern vampire might turn into a coping humanityfag. Even if it's cope, it's cope that's good for the soul, and if you want something more robust... God has been known to test the faith of the pious with great tragedy before, and nobody is beyond redemption so long as they accept Jesus Christ into their heart and truly repent for their sins.

My idea was something I called Cyrptid: the legend/yokai: the binding
It's essential a filler for other types of supernaturals/urban legends.

The basis idea it followed was "When people belive enough of a legend is true it pops into exist". The Mages called them bygones; the fae, Living Chimera, and they merely called themselves Cryptids(yokai in japan)
However since they appeared suddenly, they can disappear suddenly. Poofing away if they don't have enough status in the world, so so e counter that problem by binding onto people.

I thought about ti for a bit and even devoted some of the sub-groups for them.

Got a question about a Slasher in my HtV game. He's a former Ghoul whose master was killed by a pack of Amaranthine Cats. The guy was just dumb muscle, he's an idiot and without that sweet sweet Vitae he's suddenly found himself rapidly aging 40 years until he's a 70 year old man. As he loses his mind he tries to remember how to recapture his youth, but all he knows is that he was fed blood. He's now a Slasher, the press have named him the Vampire Killer because he rips his victims throats out and drinks as much of their blood as possible before vomiting it up later.

The question is, do I make this guy a Brute or a Freak?

I'd say it depends on how supernatural you want to run being a Slasher as. the dude's 70, so unless some fuckery is going on he's probably nowhere near strong enough to be a brute. On the other hand if being a Slasher is magic and drinking the blood really does make him stronger then he could totally be a Brute.

The garou view of the imbued was talked about a bit in official books

>As far as most werewolves are concerned, most humans who take up hunting werewolves are simply ordinary people with the willpower to resist the Delirium and the idiocy to think they're a match for Garou. Most Garou don't even know that the "imbued" class of hunter is even out there; even those who encounter an Imbued face-to-face are unlikely to be able to tell the hunter apart from a subtle fomor, mage, or otherwise enhanced human.

>Trash-80, a Bone Gnawer Ragabash, discusses that the Imbued tend to appear in cities and that they have some sort of supernatural power that isn't from the Umbra or spirits powering them. He also discusses that other Garou think they've been empowered by the Wyrm or the Weaver, but they don't smell like either. Some think that they were sent out by the Wyrm in a last desperate flash of sanity to restore balance to the world, despite not smelling of the Wyrm at all. Others think that they're the next evolutionary step up from humanity to defend itself. That a collective spirit of humanity finally got around to providing someone to fight against the Impergium, only being a zillion years too late. It could be an Eighth Sign of the Apocalypse, or it could be anything, as even these "imbued" don't have a clue either. The only thing they know is that they woke up and started seeing monsters everywhere and held on just long enough to find out that it's no hallucination. And since they're just ordinary folks at heart, that means they see the need to watch out for their kids, or to clean up their neighborhoods, etc. So, they go vigilante - and they're just tough enough to be dangerous.

This is in particular is interesting

I remember the Slasher book (1e anyways) saying that Scourge-tier Slashers that didn't start out as usually are that way because they had a brush with the supernatural. As a possibility maybe the vitae had a one-in-a-million reaction with his system as a result of the stress from accelerated aging and either supercharged his body to the point he became a brute force behemoth at the cost of atrophying his higher mental functions (Mask) or twisted his flesh and blood into a pseudo-revenant hungry for blood (Mutant). The way you become imbued is you hear a messenger whispering a truth about the supernatural into your ear, something like "she is not breathing, notice the unnatural hue of her skin, the man following her has no will." I played a 12th gen surrounded by 9th gens once. The beginning to that chronicle was very informal and I made the character very last minute, resulting in her being slightly younger than the others and I misunderstood and thought it was fixed gen 12th not starting generation 12th.

However she quickly asserted herself as the informal leader of our nascent coterie because it was a Camarilla game, she was a Ventrue, and the others weren't exactly social powerhouses. She was very focused on attributes and I started playing discipline catch-up in the midgame. Never felt like a liability and fairly regularly out-talked and out-witted older and more potent vampires. That being said, it wasn't as if I didn't feel the downsides of 12th generation. I very regularly was surprised at how much blood the other PCs could burn through without much consequence, and never bothered to even try Dominate on other vampires. Still, she clawed her way to being the unofficial right hand of the Prince, and a top agent of the Strategos of the East Coast. I found that not being able to rely on brute force blood or dominate really improves your planning skills.

full disclaimer though, we played this on a VtM in VtR conversion, so mechanically there are some differences that factor in. I still had a smaller blood pool and blood per turn than everyone else. YMMV in V20 or V5.

Thanks, and I have say the power of "legends" can have a large scope, I even have it shown a bit with the sub groups I came up that I call Families(in the taxonomy sense)
Here's them:

Tsukumogami -Legends in relation to objects, with the most prominentbeing objects simply co I to life as the namesake. Cursed items, strange heirlooms, blessed weapons, moving mannequins, even technically tree if a particular one has a story to it.

Lusii - Cryptids in the traditional western sense. Monsters that are bestial, animal like: The jersey devils, kappas, Moth man, Midnight Wolves. Beasts.

Shadow - The almost humans. The uncanny Valley of the cryptids, those peopl that you see for a second and swear they're not human. Named after the Shadow Watchers and include tall men, the hat man, any legends of ghost that in truth aren't wraiths or any true spirits, and the legendary Boogey Man

Genus Loci - A close relative of the tsukumogami, these are Areas that have seemingly come alive or hold a story. False haunted house are usually subject to them, place that peope feel like it's alive an urban legend areas akin to the Bermuda triangle or that spot peope say causes technological objecs to mysteriously shut off, even the movie "Monster House" can fit it. Not much to them except for their unique ability to access "Backspace"

Luminous - These are a recent Genus of Legends based around extraterrestrial. The aliens people say they saw. The spaceships they swear exist. Ancient aliens that never were(Takes for the inspiration btw)

Omens - the length of events one can do. The Bloody Mary Games, chain letteres of bad luck, curses and supernatural games you can play. They are the strangest because they don't have physical forms, and yet are still some how sapient

Mushi - Little guys, tiny creatures. Little pygmies, inch high enities, mysterious bugs like the Sky rods or other stone butterflies. It even has the Yule Lads of Iceland among them. (Watch the Mushi anime)

Taint isn't possession, it's taint. It's just a spiritual stain, like getting mud on your metaphysical boots.

Help me find an old greentext story anons, I thought I'd saved it but apparently not.

It's a storytime of a Vampire game where a player breaks into an apartment and nearly gets mauled to death by a housecat. It's hilarious.

My favorite part is how they are set up to be cartoonishly evil

Damn, drawanon out in full force. Lov3le the teddy and pacifier giving it a sense of personality.
>I really like the aspect of their lore that basically has them as opponents of the Changelings like how Setites are opponents of Mummie
Yeah it's nice how some clans exist to dab on specific splats.Tremere fight mages, Setites fight mummies Giovanni enslave wraiths, and though Kyasid are a minor bloodline I guess they do have that Changeling light flavour. Though I find it quaint how Setites as far as I know are the one clan getting away with messing with Woofs/changing breeds the most, particularly Bubasti/Silent Striders. I would've thought the Gangrel might have something but I think all other clans think that about them too and the official Gangrel policy is" don't fuck with them, just run"

>I wish that dimension for them were elaborated and built on more.
Yeah what DO Kyasid even do in lore besides being born from Marconius?

They converge over his eye, I think it's a charm for seeing glamors.

He's found one tonight, and wonders if he didn't also hear a stifled gasp while he fed.

It's because they're the "egypt" clan and thus are the designated cross-splat antagonists in Egypt. Whereas in VtM they're often forgotten or killed as a second string antagonist because they're so much more limited than many other groups of vampires. Thus creating the tale of two Setites where they're simultaneously this big, horrifying scourge of egypt to everyone else but not that big of a deal to the rest of vampirekind. Which creates further confusion for players as the former does not bear out in their own play experiences.

Goddamn I do not care for oWoD cross-splat.

I hadn't thought of any reason for it really, it was just something I put there to make him look a little more fae-ish, but >>96500161 had a good idea! If I had to justify it, then it would probably have something to do with seeing glamour and other changeling stuff.
>>96500019
If I had my way, Kiasydwould be given some overarching "directive" like other Clans have. Something revolving around bringing about a further chilling and freezing Winter to the world. I also would probably make them constantly hunt for Changelings, and give Mytherceria the ability to either absorb glamour or to transmute it into a "banal glamour". I also probably would have tied the Kiasyd origin somehow in with the Dauntain.

The concept doesn't translate well to WoD as everything is it's own kind of sknowflake.
For vamps the closest thing is either brujah or caitiffs.
