I dropped 40k shortly after 6th hit, but back then everyone just used whatever models they liked/had. Eldar or ImpGuard were fine, and a lot of us bought stuff to kitbash for it.
Necromunda was very popular with my friends and at the store we were regulars, we played it lots.
