My lore is that they are a ~mysterious~ Dark Angels Successor Chapter with a focus on heavy ranged weaponry. "I will be more than happy to engage their champion in a duel, if he is still alive by the time we get that close" is their attitude. They have on occasion been specifically tasked by the Lion with dealing with planets in Imperium Nihilus that refuse to rejoin the Imperium, as the amount of destruction they unleash tends to bring whole societies to heel quite quickly.

While they do have a homeworld, a Deathworld not unlike Caliban, which they recruit from, they also have a habit of taking the sons of defeated human foes as Aspirants, willing or not. Their induction process involves more and more severe hypno-indoctrination than other Chapters, and a quirk of their geneseed is that the countenance of an aspirant changes significantly, so by taking the sons they eliminate the bloodlines of their foes while still denying them the glory of having fathered a Space Marine. This also keeps them well-supplied with Initiates and has let them keep their numbers high despite the punishing wars against Chaos in the Imperium Nihilus.

I want to go vaguely French with some of theming, especially in terms of character names, to counteract the Englishness of the Dark Angels.

This is something you can definitely start from, since you can highlight such a theme of metaphorical decapitation in both chapter heraldry, and color patterns for rank designation

for example, lets say the lower ranks of the army are tagged as borderline disgraced, as they're both removed from their origins as a sort of punishment rather than a glorification, and still without the deeds that would give them a new identity in the chapter, so their armor might be similarly unadorned like in a greyshield or blackshield, save perhaps something grim and bloody to represent the fact they've effectively died, like perhaps a skull white helmet with red used as color for the gorget

as they go up the ranks the armor might start seeing more and more parts "resanctified" and decorated since they're forming an identity within the chapter, perhaps this may be tied with the unit role in question, with assault marines, one of the earliest roles of a chapter, having mostly unadorned armor save for a the quarter holding the melee weapon, which may display a green and black (with just a little off-white) pattern reminiscent of the caliban heraldry, to keep the red as spot color and to place emphasis on the weapons, especially the bigger ones, these all may be bright red

and up the ranks until you reach the higher echelons where the armour is completely decorated and instead the darker/bloody colors are kept exclusively on their weapons and robes (symbolising perhaps cloaking in secrecy their newly acquired identity?
Anonymous No.96479030
>>96479016
since your chapter seems to favour heavy weapons you might decide to have them diverge from the codex astartes and put in the role of fire support the veteran marines, throwing the newer marines as scouts, then assault, then tactical roles
this is essentially also a progression from small guns to big guns
and since the scouts don't have that much armor to properly fit as the darkest units in this whole color progression, they might have a peculiarly different scheme as symbolic "ghosts", dead but not yet "brought back"
having the least elite unit be in white is also a reversal of how the normal dark angels have their deathwing elites in white

the symbol might be again something representing this execution/decapitation of a noble line, by having a sword thrust down into a skull, or represent this progress of return from a kind of death, with an upside down coffin shape
or something that tries to have both elements in a weird mix like a ouroboro with a cut head

then serpent symbology might be extra useful to have since snakes have often been associated with femininity and with transformation

the french vouivre is a serpentine creature similar to a wyvern but sometimes without legs, it would allow you to have something french sounding in your chapter name and keep the various wings iconography on many marines by simply adding a serpentine design sprouting from the skull generally in the middle
nobody really cares if the wings are feathered or batlike anyway
Anonymous No.96479113 >>96479169

oh shit, that's good. Vouivre Knights could work as the Chapter name. I just need to figure out how to pronounce vouivre.

I was already thinking of doing the main color armor metallic, because that's easy and I'm lazy. But if they're the Vouivre Knights then it would look like a thematic choice.

Shit, man, thanks.
Anonymous No.96479169
>>96479113
Wait, no. The Knights of FlorΓ©al. Because then I can use the flower symbols from the Sisters transfer sheet and add a sword or a skull or something to make it unique. Bright metallic knightly armor, unique individual heraldry on sergeant and officer tilting shields. Campaign honors and such on officers, elites, and veterans. So it will all look very knightly, but I'll mainly be using, like, Hellblasters and Desolation Squads and Heavy Intercessors. Which I think will create a unique contrast between aesthetic and function

Goddamn, I really just needed a little bit of idea bouncing and I got it.

Thanks anons!

Serious question: what is the appeal of Space Marines? I ask because they are easily the least interesting part of the setting for me, yet I have a considerable amount of them I've collected from various starter/FOMO boxes. They have a notoriously obsessive/autistic fanbase, and they print money for GW, so maybe I'm just missing something.

So hey, if you love marines, sell me on marines. Give me a reason to put a dent into this pile of shame. I feel like Raven Guard or Salamanders might be fun?

Then a few drops of primer & thinner to prime stuff. For paints, I found regular water works just fine. Just add in a few drops and you're good to go. I heavily suggest watching this video. In "Dawn of Fire: The Silent King", it's revealed that Roboute is taking promising Primaris marines under his wing and grooming them to be more than warriors. He is molding them to be leaders of men. Marine rulers and governors over mankind meant to lead the species to peaceful times. His old dream of Marines ruling and guiding humanity never died.
That would explain a troubling pattern with Roboute. He keeps sidelining baseline men leaders in favor of marine rulers. He forcefully reunited the 500 worlds of Ultramar and revived the Tetrarch Council, whose members are high-ranking Marines chosen by Roboute himself to rule Ultramar and its hundreds of worlds.

He bestowed on Dante of the Blood Angels the title of Warden of Imperium Nihilus, making him the effective ruler of half of the Imperium.
He named Captain Vitrian Messinius the Warden of Nephilim Sector, granting full authority over the Imperial forces and worlds within that shrouded part of the Imperium.
The template Roboute intends to reform the Imperium into is Ultramar. And who rules Ultramar? The Space Marines!
Again and again, Roboute is imposing Marine rule over mankind. This is explicitly against the Emperor's wishes, according to Malcador. The Emperor did not want transhumans to rule over humanity.

Do you know who has the same line of thinking as Roboute? Warmaster Abaddon. His ambition is for the Marines to rule over the Imperium that they created. As Horus did, Abaddon sees baseline humans as too weak and unworthy to lead the Imperium. Mortal men ruling, in his reckoning, would only lead the species to ruin. He dreams of an Imperium ruled by Space Marines as it was always meant to be before the lying Emperor betrayed his angels by elevating mere men over them.

So fundamentally, Roboute and Abaddon are in agreement. I think it's part of GW's plan to make the two characters mirror each other.
If both of them want the same thing, couldn't they has things out?

Navigators and the navy being important doesn't change the fact that they are now subservient to a marine ruler.
