Not quite hex but Clash of Cultures. If it has to be straight up hex tiles, Keyflower.

The cards in La Famiglia. I dig Santiago's art style.

Weird, I'm drawing a blank here. I own a bunch of games involving cards, but nothing really stands out. Fuck MTG and all, but their top tier artwork is absolutely amazing. Maybe Inis, but that probably only comes to mind for its uniqueness.

Mysterium/Mysterium Park (I combined them so I forget which card goes to which game) feels like cheating, but I'll pick that for now.
>Favorite solo game
Don't play solo. Board games are an inherently social hobby for me personally.
That said, I tried that new Fate of the Fellowship game on BGA a couple of times and I had more fun with it solo than I did cooperatively. Still not a big fan of it though.

Invalid opinion. They're glorified solo gamers. If you play board games mostly on TTS you either have no friends IRL, lack the social skills to keep a friend group, or are too fat and lazy to leave your house.
Anonymous No.96485190
>>96485155
No. For several reasons.
1. TTS automate upkeep with deck shuffling and such. This could have someone believing a game is less tedious than it really is resulting in a higher opinion of a game then it would get normally.
2. The tactile experience of playing a game is factor in overall opinion. Shit components won't make a good game bad likewise great components won't make a bad game good, however, they absolutely have an effect on the overall experience and longevity of a board game. TTS remove tactile experiences from the game entirely and it is something worth noting.
3. IRL physical gaming sessions are a SOCIAL activity and TTS are an inferior replacement. This also extends to virtual RPG sessions as well. While RPG sessions offer you tools you won't usually get (dynamic fog of war, heaps of maps, easily referenced attacks for enemies) there is little benefit for board games when the stuff on display is what you would have access to in the box.

All in all, it's just the worst possible way to play the game 9 times out of 10 and as such the opinion of those who mainly use TTS to game should not have the same weight as someone who physically played the game. I'm not even saying they have to buy the game, go play it at a buddy's house or game shop or something, but using a TTS only to judge a game is just dumb.
If you can't game any other way, by all means.

You got me!
We discussed post game how we'd play it next time.
One player hard shafted himself with poor gate/structure placement and spent most of the game trying to claw back in, while another realised too late how to combo points effectively. So we may use the same power set up, but also noted that should we be 4 instead of 5, that'll strip one suite out too and be a significant change if something like Puncture or Cascade isnt in the set.
Nevermind exploring it anew with entirely foreign and more subtle/violent powers.
We were very surprised how smooth it played. Reminded me of Cosmic Frog in that way. You know what to do, how many turns it'll take to get things in place, but there is always the chance of an awful hiccough happening. But it rarely ever takes more than a minute.
I hope next time some poor sucker hums and haws over what Instability card to keep, and we actually trigger the "turns come back to you, haven't decided? Neighbor chooses for you/randomly" rule.

Classics is most straightforward.
Downside is some of those civs then feel VERY plain and dull compared to the others. Like I dont see myself ever really going back to the Persians or Macedonians.
You also see the same sort of strategy across those decks. Acquire regions > spam Glory.
Horizons still has civs you can cut your teeth on, Magyars, Taino, and Japanese.
Legends I slightly prefer over Classics as you still have relatively easy to learn and pilot decks like Mauryans, Qin, and Minoans. And then very flavorful and fun decks like Arthurians and Atlanteans that will break your established play patterns, but without bending you over with new concepts or tight constrictions like the Innu, Polynesians, or the Trade Route civs.

it's so much better than it has any right to be. if you can sit with some minor rules ambiguity and seek out answers from the designer on BGG, there's an excellent fast playing dueller waiting for you.
the way passing works makes tempo very dynamic and fun. you're making crucial decisions immediately with your team buildout, and then from the first turn there's so many directions you can go with your setup in terms of what cards to buy and when to recruit other heroes. there's plenty of bluffing and mind games with the schemes system, separate win cons for each player, and baiting positional overreach while holding massive combos in hand. i think it's pretty thematic too, but i'm only a casual DC enjoyer

Who cares about BGG ratings? BGG lets you rate games that haven't even released yet, because you can just claim that you totally played it at a convention (once, with a rushed middling understanding of the rules because you have other slops to play before the convention closes).

Ideally BGG shouldn't even let you rate a game unless you have at least 10 logged plays. The autismos who bother rating games are probably the same autismos who use BG Stats to track how many sheep they scored in each and every single game they played, so there's little risk of them just cheating it.

I played Dominion and Ascension like a decade ago and thought they were alright, but not amazing or anything.

>I threw out my minis for Heroes of Might and Magic III and Cthulhu Wars because they aren't needed and cut the box size in half.
Cool story brah. The board presence is the best part of Cthulhu Wars and playing the Battlefield expansion of HoMM3 is absolutely required for the final battle and it sucks without the minis. I'm sorry you gimped your games that way and I hope you can get them fixed eventually.

nah, being the best at a hobby board game is retarded. If you were smart you'd get good at a game that actually has a dedicated competitive environment, and even that is a massive waste of time. You're not the Magnus Carlson of Brass Birmingham.

I laughed, I like to play to win, but actually dedicating time to even the most played game on BGA is a giant waste of time. It's fun to play games but it's actually braindead to grind leaderboards for anything, let alone a board game.

Agreed, 99.9% of boardgames are not designed to be played competitively, and would not stand up to such scrutiny. Think of it like videogames, there's maybe 10-15 actively maintained games people actually care about playing at the highest level, and they get updates to address meta and fix unintended bugs. Hobby boardgames really have none of this, and are better for it. The absolute best player at (insert euro here) today would be considered trash if several million people played it, and there were 6-7 figure prize pools to incentive players. No one is grinding brass birmingham 10 hours a day for years.

I've seen this "person" a few times online. I put person in quotations as everything about them reeks of being one of those lizard-folk that network their way into everything rather than on any real merit of skill or contribution.

Their only notable designs being the aformentioned high tides (Only notable because they were in person spamming it at Gen Con) and a fucking solo mode for evolutions should tell you everything you need to know... I would go as far to say that by financially supporting this person in anyway you are helping someone who will never contribute to society or the world at all and is only interested in leeching off of others.

Nobody has said they can't compete, it's just a waste of time. If you want actual competition you'll play chess or poker because that's where actual talent plays in this space, but that's still mostly a waste of time. Having a high elo on castles of burgundy online is a sign you have too much free time. Nobody gives a shit if you have the world record speed run for a newgrounds porn game either. Caring after children is, depending on the kid, lots of to monumental amounts of work, and boardgames are a suprisingly challenging medium imo. Aside from needing no small amount of time, also getting 2-4 other people to join you, learn the rules etc. does make everything a bit complicated, and that's not even touching how games sometimes just fall flat for one group and are great with anonther.

Point being, reading/watching movies/playing videogames is comparatively much easier to find time for

I'm not big on deductions games but I have enjoyed Alchemists, The Search for , and Mushroom Sort at 4 players. Among them Mushroom Sort is the most "like Clue" because each player starts with partial information the other players lack and players force each other to share their information ovetlr the course of the game. But the similarities end there.

there was an anon that made a pnp that was clue without a board that i printed out a year or two ago and it was pretty good. It was basically just clue with just cards and you swapped with some cards in a shared area in the middle of the table, but there was no board. It basically distilled clue into 21 cards
