Why do traditional games seem to attract the most socially undesirable people?

Not trolling, I seriously would like to get to the bottom of this. I don't get it, tabletop games are social in nature so why do they attract anti-social weirdos, you expect these types to stay at home and video game. Why are some games MUCH worse that other when it comes to players, ie. Warhammer 40k is worse than historical Wargames, compared MtG to Chess, etc.

Is there an explanation for this phenomenon?

I've played in different groups and you learn to either enjoy different things or gently move out when it's not for you. 50% of the experience hinges on the GM being able to manage the table, 40% is matching the general vibe, and 10% is dumb luck.

It's funny visiting conventions nowadays, because the crowd looks way different than it used to. Back in the day, it was all greasy hair, ill fitting shirts your mom bought you, and a lot of out of shape guys packed into a hall. Now the newer generations seem much more well kept.

I think part of it comes from cross-pollination - cosplayers, anime fans, and the video game community mixing into the same spaces. On top of that, conventions themselves have shifted from niche gatherings into big, family friendly events. The result is that the turbo-geek atmosphere has smoothed out into something more mainstream, polished, and approachable.

We get to this bitter state because many game manufacturers (not all, Battletech is still using pretty much the same system and models from 40 years ago) engage in unfair practices to boost sales that are detrimental to the gamer.

Imagine, you become invested in a game, use up valuable time, money, study and effort to finally build and paint up a collection to play with, gain a group of likeminded friends to play, then enjoy playing for a few years. You then find out that your collection, rule set or edition has been changed by the manufacturer and the collection of models, rule sets or edition you own are no longer supported, just because the company wants you to dump everything you have and buy another set of everything.

You see new players coming in and instead of enlarging the current player player base, they start a new one that is incompatible with yours. The more vulnerable of your friends fall for this and start the cycle again and again, constantly trying to keep up with the ever changing cycle of buy, dump, buy, dump, instead of just playing the game they previously enjoyed.

This is what makes many of us bitter. Much of the bile isnt directed at the players of the new editions, its often because we are trying to save them from the same disapointment and betrayal we feel. The current players often laugh at us still trying to promote early versions, but the idiots don't realise that they to will soon be joining us, as their current collection/version will be supplanted as well and they will be considered 'grogs' by the new generation of players that replace them.

I think if you're a high-functioning nerd, you have a mask on at work etc that's pretty exhausting to maintain. You need to pencil in a certain amount of time with other nerds because the normies will crush you with their banality. A guy at my work ribs me about using a word he didn't know months ago like it's the funniest thing he'd ever experienced. So you have a certain amount of time when you can be yourself and chat about history or Asian horror movies or whatever and while you enjoy the game, you're aware it's a vector for socializing.

And then you have low-functioning nerds who are NEETs etc but have realized they have social needs(the more hardcore autists won't get past playing vidya on their own) and want to be around the high-functioning nerds. The autism brain goes all in on Warhammer or whatever and they play extremely competitively because it's probably the one thing they're good at. I think the most successful games are the ones that have allowed these two groups to work in harmony. Like how old 40K tournaments had painting/sportsmanship prizes or how RPGs have a mix of combat and roleplaying/acting.
