I mean, has there ever been a time that a 'horde' killteam is considered powerful? I remember trying to play horde orks in 1e but you simply couldn't put enough models on the table to make them remotely viable, especially against expensive elite teams like Harlequins/Custodes

Deathwatch is definitely overtuned, some of their operatives (aegis in particular) are just impossible for some teams to deal with.
But they're within reason for most teams, and they're the exception currently. Other marine teams are quite balanced, you just need to know how to play against elites.

I'm playing with a mate and I'm worried that a 10 vs 5 game might be too strong for one side or the other. I was gonna play Mandrakes and give him Raveners
Anonymous No.96499174 [Report] >>96565081
>>96499160
The problem with Mandrakes is that they are a complex and fragile team that need lots of experience to be played well and not explode. So while an experienced Mandrake player Vs an experienced Ravener player is a somewhat fair matchup if you are both new the Mandrake player is probably going to get stomped.
Anonymous No.96499187 [Report]
>>96499140
Wait, that's correct
That changes a lot, this update just makes it less random
Huh

>>96499160
The raveners are obviously more powerful per unit than the mandrakes, how else would the game be balanced
Hard to say if the matchup is fair though. Mandrakes and raveners are both unconventional teams that cirumvent things most teams need to care about, so pitting two against each other will be unpredictable. Maybe mandrakes just won't have the damage output to handle the snakes, maybe the raveners will be countered by not being as effective at zoning against the teleporting edgelords. Should be interesting though.

Is it just me, or does the Chaos cult seems to be a pretty staightforward team? Mutate as much cultists as possible, send the mutants into close combat, helped by the two sword guys..?
Anonymous No.96499756 [Report]
>>96499265
It's more difficult than it looks. Once they mutate they basically can't do mission actions so you have to be careful not to lock yourself out of the objective, and you completely lack ranged threat so the enemy is allowed to position much more freely against you.

The urge to add this one really cool shoulder pad to my deathwatch squad struck me hard today so I whipped up a guy wearing modified heavy armour with a grenade rifle to represent a breacher vet for my team to put the shoulder pad on. Really good blending practice if you're not used to it already. The chapter badge got a bit tilted when I painted it though, oops.
I also might be out of melta bomb bits, at least I couldn't find one, but I came up with a more fun solution; he has a tangle of missiles that he throws over an enemy like a net, then detonates. Seemed like a fitting style for a deathwatch vet wearing highly customized armour and an unusual main weapon. Next model I'll be sure to finally make one carrying some kitbashed xenotech, there's a lot of fun modelling stuff I haven't done yet with this kill team.
Just gotta give him a name and come up with some lore for him. I think he might be a bit straightforward and easily outwitted in battle, as a reference to the only piece of real lore the chapter has.

If I don't have anything at all, will the box alone allow me to play the game or do I need more plastic and books to play?

How does the availability usually go with stuff like that? Is it a "preorder now or never get it ever", or is it the type of product you can find for cheap after a while?

You'll probably want the equipment upgrade pack, the universal equipment barricades and ladders are pretty necessary for the intended experience. If you go with 3D prints instead, they have to be the same shape. Anything that uses a "marker" can just be a 20mm token though.
You should also get the approved ops pack that just dropped, that has the standard mission setup and game sequence and all the tac ops. Without it you won't get the matched play experience.
Aside from that not really, you can use wahapedia or some other site for the full rules. The box comes with enough models and terrain to play the full game.

The components of the box (each team and the terrain set) will eventually come out separately and much more permanently, but the bundle price for the box is significantly cheaper if you want everything in it. Yes, they make it in very limited quantities, though it's a bit inconsistent how long it lasts. The recent releases before this one have at least felt like they lasted reasonably long.

At least it's just that you need to get the right engagements against marines so it's a skill floor thing now
Last edition it was the same but reversed and much more severe, I ran compendium marines against vetguard and warpcoven 30 times in a row for 0 wins and a single draw despite making no tangible mistakes, then played a complete fuckup of a game as hunter clade against the same guy where I made tons of mistakes and got a better score than any of the previous 30 games

Personally I think it's the alternative activation. Even Legions Imperialis does it's own thing with it, instead of "ok I rolled to go first so my army will now take out multiple of your units while you just have to stand there and wait until I finish moving all 100 of my models". Some aspects got better with giving you some reactions in the enemy turn, but having to wait for an opponent with a horde army to finish his movement phase instead of us taking turns moving their models just bores people.

"I want to win a good, fair game where everyone understands that there is a shared set of rules that we choose to adhere to. Rules lawyering is completely antithetical to that because it places the more confrontational, aggressive, and antisocial party in a position of power. I do want to win, but rules lawyering isn't winning, at least not to me."

Bit rough for phobos though
>find an opportunity to charge
>priest can divert the first fight you do
>you kill his 7 wound bodyblock by doing lethal assaults + stealth assault
>fight again
>need to inflict 2 normal hits and a crit minimum to kill the priest, which has a decent maul and potential just a scratch ability
>if you fail, you lose a marine for a single mook as the priest gets healed by the salvationist
If it works though, you do cripple the team
>>96568684
The better answer is to target the damage dealers like the melta and the proper flamer, and to never let the chainsaw murderer get an initiative charge off (look out for it dashing for free at the start of the turn for a potential long charge, that's how I did my opponent's reiver sergeant in in pic related at the start of turn 2).

Thank you. I've always struggled with painting flesh but lately I've been making some improvements.

Anyways, that flesh is basically two paints. Vallejo game color elf skin tone over a light primer. Then Vallejo Xpress color dwarf flesh.

I kept it pretty simple because I liked the douchy surfer tan look. But one thing to do if you want to do face highlights is to glaze on multiple thin highlights so the transition is less harsh, if that makes sense.

Eyes are tough and I usually don't bother other than on characters and skirmish projects. I attached the heads to toothpicks and primed/painted them separately. I used a magnifying glass with LEDs that clamps onto my table from Amazon. To dot the eyes I got some micron pens(also on Amazon).

Deciding on how a marine relates to the stereotype of their chapter is a good way to get some instant characterization down
I've got both chapter exemplars, like my hawk lord sergeant who is both well-read on the codex and a fantastic pilot, and complete aberrations; my angels of vengeance sniper asked for some sort of decoration for a critical role in a campaign and got a fancy shoulder pad and a permanent secondment to the deathwatch in reply.
And then I've got some other cases like the red scorpion primaris marine who would like to be a good chapter member but got sent away because primaris new and scary.
Just going with either the most stereotypical combo of role and chapter or the complete opposite every time without thinking is a lot less cool to me.
