Played a 2k game of Aspect host vs Starshatter Necrons yesterday, decided to bring every phoenix lord with their aspects (and an autarch with scorpions) as a gimmick list. Turns out Characters with Aspect tokens are a special kind of vile.

Are Sternguard worth it in a Black Templars army? They look cool and could have some interesting uses. I'm running Companions of Vehemence. They get reroll 1s to wound if targeting the nearest enemy unit.
But the rest of the vows and strats in the army skew towards melee.

I'd start pretty much every army save for votrans and admech. I think this is one of the main reasons why GW games are so successful. There are so many factions within 40k alone to collect it's hard to escape this wargame. And even when I do, I will go for a Fantasy setting for a change, and not their competition in another space fantasy/scifi setting. And it will be WHFB/TOW or Mesg then, both of which happen to be by GW too. And in them again I'd like to have almost every army too.

Will there ever be a game that depicts the contrast between factions accurately? Where the Imperial Guard is deploying accurate levels of manpower, and the Space Marines are as powerful as they should be, and the Tau’s technological edge is actually displayed on the field?

Because typically a Space Marine only costs about as much as 3 to 5 Guardsmen or so, and yet the Guardsmen stand a serious chance of bringing down that Space Marine, and meanwhile the Tau are over here just using recycled Imperium vehicle stats as if they’re just a reskin.

The armies I have are Daemons, Dark Eldar and Eldar. Thought Orks would be a good "simple" army so I don't have to micromanage and ultra-plan every single move.
But I still have some Eldar to finish assembling before I purchase anything else (some Space Marines as well)
I stupidly bought a Custodes Army to get that "simple" vibe but that I now regret buying and I hope I manage to sell it before I finish assembling Eldar. If I don't, no Orks for me :(

I already have a very concise list of the stuff I want that would surely be an unplayable mess but this time it's because I would get them to have a small cohesive collection for display and custom games rather than a collection of each unit or the best units for the normal game.

GSC isn't really difficult, just tedious. You need to paint a LOT of models. I started it last year as my first army and it's sure been an experience. But yeah it's expensive and I wouldn't recommend anyone to collect it for the time being unless you come across a good 2nd hand deal or a decent combo box is once again available. The new combat patrol is fine to get two for making a meta list, or even three but you'll be missing Neophyte Hybrids and you want a lot Neophyte Hybrids. Sadly they're not available at a discount.
