Just as the DBM spear exception is vulnerable to missile fire, I propose a similar unit.
Saxon Raider, 400 to 600, Warband Exception,
They're 4 or 4 Fast vs melee, but 2 vs missile and cavalry.
With their loose formations and smaller shields, but intense aggression, they can fight and beat auxiliary but can't keep pace with pisoli

Trying to make a realistic artillery mechanic for a ww1 game.
Currently it's like this:
>You fire your artillery (heavy seige variety)
>it has an area of damage of 4 hexes
>roll die for each individual hex trying to get a 6
>rolls (2,2,4,6)
>the first 3 hexes are misses and the last hex is a hit because you rolled a 6
>Any unit in the hex will be stunned or killed, and leave a crater
-Theres also a shop where you can buy a large assortment of historical artillery for the nation you play as, and they each have different areas of effect sizes and shapes.

yeah, the intention was to replicate ww1 artillery barrage on a trench line. So they will mostly miss, but they will suppress and cause craters which can be used as mini defensive forts when going over the top.
For example A long range Skoda 38cm kanone fires from behind friendly lines but has a wide 7 hex spread. So it may miss targets but will also create craters and prevent opponent from bundling up in one area

Have you read much in the way of first world war accounts?
This is a decent one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARD-xXwKI3A
I collected a few WW1 audiobooks together here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARD-xXwKI3A&list=PLYIx7audKFzw4SyvD7Kq3QCjt1BhdEoCB
What I remember is that artillery could be relatively precise - if you wanted to hit the enemy trenchline, you generally did thanks to observers, or it being a static defense that probably hasn't changed position in a year or so.
While artillery is falling, everyone is in their dugouts, or hugging a crater, no one moves (unless they're currently on the attack and the artillery is a creeping barrage supporting them).
Then once the artillery clears, people immediately get back into their positions and man their guns.
This is why creeping barrages became so necessary, as you need a physical / smoke barrier between you and the enemy and to hit the enemy as you're walking up to his trench in order to effectively suppress MGs and rifle fire.
If it's a hex game I'd say any hexes targeted by artillery are suppressed, and if they are in a trench or shell crater, they'd take casualties on a 6+. If they're in a dugout they take no casualties, and if they're in the open and advancing, they'd take casualties on a 3+, although they'd immediately hit the ground after the first barrage, so would be like 5+ after the initial fires.

I love smoke and fire effects and I use them almost every game. I remember playing 40k as a kid and we would always kept every destroyed tank one board with smoke and fire bellowing out. It was so thematic and cool, but it's completely unheard of in modern 40k. The tank literally just disappears once it's healthy bar is empty.
I have been playing Spectre Operations and use lots of smoke grenade which necessitates smoke effects on the board.

Also thats a great idea for the mechanic. I want to be super in depth autistic with the artillery since it will be an artillery based game. Like theres plenty of autistic games for Warships and tanks but not artillery, and I want it to scratch that itch, so any ideas are welcome

I had a lot of fun designing Westfront after reading a ton of first hand accounts of the war.
It's more company scale, but I had creeping barrages as an off table event that happens when you're ordered to make certain types of attack. You have no control over exactly where it's placed, but have to advance behind it anyway if you want to use it for cover... which often meant you'd take casualties from your own artillery, which is realistic (and even preferred by commanders of the time - they expected at least 10% casualties from friendly artillery, otherwise the creeping barrage is too far away!)

You put together a perfectly readable post, so I'm going to assume you aren't so retarded that you can't understand the difference between a glossy, full colour, hardback physical rulebook available for general public purchase and your own homebrew. So do you have a persecution complex or is this post setting up the backpatting from fags in the replies? Nobody is expecting you (a spanner) to pay some faggot to use his "art", and you fucking know it. I hope you aren't teaching your sons to carry on like this. On that note, if you're writing this homebrew for your kids and you to spend time together over a shared hobby, I'm baffled why you wouldn't make it your own and get them involved by getting them to illustrate it.
What we have, in Pillage, is (like I said) a glossy, full colour, hardback physical rulebook for a historical game, which is peppered with with shitty fantasy digital illustrations. If these were with shitty fantasy illustrations made by a person, opinions would start with sympathetic vicarious embarrassment for the guy putting it together and get worse from there. Instead we have shitty fantasy digital illustrations made by a computer (trained on shitty fantasy digital illustrations made by people), which for some reason (which I do not care to understand nor do I have any interest in having it explained to me) means there's posters going "And That's A Good Thing™". I don't care about that faggotry. It looks like shit, it smells like shit, it's shit.

I saw zombies on their page, is there a sort of zombie outbreak ruleset for it as well. Or is there another wild, or weird, west set game you all would recommend. The amount of terrain and models you get in their new starter is makes it a solid option, even if I use another games system.

As for vehicles in ruins, I don't give a fuck what the rules say, if it's not thematic and relatively believable for the period being simulated, I don't like to see it on the tabletop. Thankfully I have a large group of male family members I get to play with and I feel comfortable checking them if they try some 40k waac shit. Half of us are veterans, so we are pretty good at playing on the spirit of the conflict instead of gamifying it.
Either way, you should house rule it so vehicles have a chance to get stuck and immobilized in ruins

Trouble is I don't really know much about the US Marines organization, specifically how units are composed around the LAV 25 amphibious assault vehicle. PLA has heavy armored amphibious assault battalions, but frankly since Chinese army is "foreign" to us I feel a lot less pressure to accurately portray their forces.

Are there any highly crunchy, borderline RPG WW2 rules out there? I mean where you're playing at max a platoon, which would take you a long time to play, but a fun, decently long game could be had with only a couple units per side. The scenarios you're playing aren't really points balanced but rather have narrative based objectives. For reference, I've been playing 40K Rogue Trader recently, and it just makes me want to play something similar but set in WW2.

Chain of Command is a narrative heavy platoon-level WW2 game. The campaign system is pretty fun, you generate personalities for all your leaders and even track the mental state of your senior leader. If you lose enough games the guy kills himself. You also track the opinion of your men and the opinion of your CO.
Definitely not as much mechanical customization as 40k/Rogue Trader, but as you take losses you can customize how your platoon is organized on the fly. In one campaign my Panzer Grenadier platoon had taken so many losses I concentrated my LMGs into two 5 man squads while I had one squad of all riflemen for maneuver purposes.

No actually. There's the Combined Arms campaign system they sell separately, but from what i saw looking into it it didn't look very fun. A few of the books have some sort of campaign system, but my basic logic was
>Need North Africa map that covers everything from the Torch landings to Cairo
>Oh hey, Axis and Allies has one
>Wait, why create a separate campaign system...

Do you guys always go for big army projects or do you settle on small sample-sized armies as well? I often feel the urge to build a pocket-sized army with a variety of small units that wouldn't translate well to any historically-accurate army composition. Lately I have been eyeing Macedonians a lot, but I just want to build and paint maybe three dozens of Phalangites, a dozen of Royal Guard, half a dozen Companion cavalry perhaps. I am not even sure for what game such an army could be used.

I'm planning something like this, 1 squad of special forces in places like Burma, LRDG, Vietnam, Soviet-afghan war, Rhodesia, etc. Coop skirmish game along the lines of Rangers of Shadow Deep meets the Missile Threat mercenary air campaign meets Metal Gear Solid. It will be relatively rules light gameplay, but some inventory, weight and ammo management and XP system. Realistic weapon and magazine weights and magazine sizes.
Enemies will be driven by a simple flowchart and will patrol (unlike rangers shadow deep where they move directly towards you), so options for stealth instead of brute force.
The idea is to have a core system that can handle multiple conflicts, then just adjust the weapons, enemies and random events to suit each conflict. You could play as allied special forces, or VC/ NVA or Japanese patrols, so options for both sides.
Would be cool to do something on stay behind forces too, say late 70s early 80 cold war gone hot where Soviets have advanced over your position and you need to call in srikes and survive as long as possible.

You need to distinguish hobby from club. This is a mistake I keep seeing being made by boomers like LWTV who lament some sort of decline in the hobby. Just because young people don't want to play with boomers doesn't mean they're not entering the hobby. Companies like Victrix wouldn't be growing if that were the case. Young people play with their own groups, typically a mix of historical and non-historical games, and don't generally go to shows because they don't perceive there to be any need when their hobby networking is largely online.

For nogames, no matter the period, 28mm is superior. I would say also try and get some 54mm minis, those are a beaut. If you are looking to play, you have to consider the space. If you live in a studio apartment with no space whatsoever, consider smaller scales. They look good, too. But for painting 28mm is a great scale while still letting you play if you have a big table.

Amazing idea. There is a guy on YouTube called The Solo Wargamer who exclusively played a version of Spectre Ops/Asymmetric Warfare that he home brewed to hell and back to allow solo play, with roaming enemies, concealed enemies, etc. and eventually he made his own game called Haywire which I believe you can get for free. It is intended for solo spec ops missions. Anyways, you could steal a lot of good ideas from that guy. Also yoi should really consider stealing a lot from Asymmetric Warfare, the combat system and game play REALLY evoke a feeling of what modern combat should feel like.
I am planning starting a Vietnam project for AW soon once I'm done moving houses, what you're saying really interests me, I love late cold War stuff like Rhodesia, Soviet Afghan, etc

Here's the cover for the Afghanistan version - the Infiltrate series name should nicely line up with the settings to create unique game names.
I'm currently grinding through all the Ostfront 2nd ed. army lists - the game is pretty much done, and I'm 82% complete on army lists... just Continuation war, D-Day+ and Pacific to go. Oh and the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran, because no one has ever covered that.

Most people (particularly within the same population group) tend closely towards the average. It's not ideal to have all your dudes exactly the same size, but that's better than constant variation. Extreme outliers, like what you posted, are exactly that.
(also, that guy is clearly into bodybuilding, which won't make someone taller, but that kind of physique was nearly nonexistent going back barely more than half a century ago)
Miniature "scales" are bullshit ("28mm," etc.); they should us actual scales, like 1/56 and such. Scale creep punishable by execution.

is not really the case.
They have one set with 4 bodies of greatcoats, and a variety of weapon options, but half is for late war, and their other sets are Battle for Berlin very late war, including stuff like Fliegerfaust and Volkssturmgewehr 45 and Hurtgenwald Volksgrenadiers, again with lots of STGs.
Fallschirmjäger and LW Felddivision is of little use too.
I might pick up the multipart set for the winter guys regardless, and see if the bodies with greatcoats match with spare Warlord arms with regular rifles for some mid-war winter troops.

The bodies do not bother me, and even you have a squad of 10 guys, all the same height in 28mm, the different poses will change their height anyway. One might stand upright, one could kneel, one leaning forward to aim etc..
It bothers me way more if the weapon and their equipment is different sizes. Because no matter what pose or body shape the kneeling soldier has, his Thompson or Enfield should be identical to his running midget comrade.
