It isn't, plenty of magical creatures in myths and legends are weak to iron, so it's understandable that iron also affects the magic of casters but babies don't want to watch a knight be tanking spell damage.

I can see why wizards who use a lot of elemental spells would avoid metal armor. It heats up and conducts electricity, making it easier to hurt yourself if you're casting fireball or lightning. Hardened leather and other non-conductive armors should work, though.

I allow magic-users to loot and craft magical belts which act as armor.

Meanwhile in good games, anyone can wear whatever the fuck they want, and it only has a drawback if they specifically choose one (or more) in exchange for discounted resource investment.

Metal isn't magically conductive unless enchanted, but enchantments lock items to a single spell effect configuration so if you wear armor you're stack casting a single spell until you take it off. There you go.

Same excuse also now functions to give martials more relevance because their armor is naturally somewhat anti-magic.
