FF d20
This crazy pile of anime garbage is at least a better game than pathfinder. When the hell did they add bloodbowl to the game as blitzball - this game is so fully featured its not funny.

They will get access to light armor and shields but can get tankier with PrCs can can full attack+geomancy with some builds. Their spell list has nuking and healing and they get some druid/ranger wilderness utility. Very versitile midline mage with strong damage potential. They also get group buffs like FF11 geomancers.

The group has changed members over the years with my brother being the only truly consistent players who'se been there since day one. I typically run smaller campaigns that all take place in the same world. The players are currently about 2/3rds of the way through a high level campaign(13 atm) and we're starting a low level campaign(3) on the off weeks when one of the players is out of town for schooling.
For subsystems the only ones I use other than the base materia rules are Moogle in the Room and a system from PF1e called background skills that gives some extra skill points each level that can only be spent on the less useful skills.

Current party for the high level is:
>Lord Mortis - Skullshield Necromancer - A noble undead knight who looks scary as fuck from a time long past. He fights for justice alongside his undead baby tonberry familiar named Bartleby. He's also a tailor and crafts a lot of the party's magical gear.
>Skip - Al Bhed Red Mage - A member of the Warrior's Respite, a neutral guild of mercenaries who act as mediators between the four kingdoms of the continent. Joined for easy money but has become the heart of the team as the oldest living member. Blessed by Fat Chocobo and spent all of her money from the last arc buying onions to evolve it.
>Zoarin Alhesta - Varg Elemental Dragoon - A member of the Dalernian Royal Dragoons hunting a traitor to his order. Regularly jumps 120 feet in the air. The dice gods love how unbelievably reckless he is.
>Bramble and Pod - Cactuar Verdant Rider Beastmaster - An Indiana Jones style whip master and treasure hunter who rides on a giant vine snake he grew from his head. Just left the party to assist some NPC's for a solo mission in his hometown in the desert while they take on the more immenint threats.

The crew is just about to assist Garland(Leader of the Warrior's Respite) in the assault of a corrupted underwater temple to kill Kraken before he summons the zombie biomechanical war machine that is Leviathan's corpse back into this world and brings about a disaster of colossal proportions.

The low level campaign follows a group of new recruits to the Blackfire Torch, a joint effort between the four nations and the Warrior's Respite to combat the forces of the Mad Primal Shiva from the northern tundra. Its basically the wall from GoT. Just a bunch of mooks trying to survive the meat grinder.

Charactera aren't fleshed out yet but the party is
>Hume Shadow Monarch Necromancer(Literally the Sung Jin Woo/Solo Levelling archetype)
>Tonkin Field Specialist Medic(Doctor with a gun)
>Hume Viper Ninja(Loses ninjutsu but can fuse any two weapons together into a double weapon and gets a bunch of two-weapon foghting shit)

Main issue with FFd20 is that you very much Need to print your shit, because the site has a downright notorious update rate. Fantastic strength to the project, that it constantly updates to keep itself 'balanced'- but it's also the biggest weakness because one second the rules say one thing, and the moment you need to clarify a rule they'll have revamped it for some reason or another.

Also, every class- and there are Many -have at least one or two meme Archetypes based on other media. Like the Fencer have Archetypes based on Kamen Rider... Zi-O? And the other one's a Force Sensitive.

Pf1 is a good frame for a system it's just that everything built on it is shit. I still need to look at FFd20 more before I make my judgement but a system that keeps that frame and avoids problems like ivory tower game design and mages trivializing encounters with a single spell could be really good.

Skullshield and the Viper is my brother. Shadow Monarch is a new player for the low level campaign. Younger guy playing actual D&D for the first time so his first character is going to be pretty derivative.
I have those two in my world but they're on a different continent than the one the campaign takes place on. Maybe once we finish the high level campaign I'll set the next one over there.
I know Mandragora's can get some Malboro stuff as racials and blue mages can learn bad breath and its contemporaries. I thiiiink there's an entire archetype built around maboro stuff but I don't remember what class its for.

>>96547083
Beastmaster has been pretty good. Bramble is super unoptimized but the nice thing about ffd20 is you can't really fuck up your build since the classes themselves are so strong. Bramble focuses on inflicting minor status effects with no save and crit fishing to proc extra attacks for his giant fuck off plant snake with grab. Its very similar to the Hunter class from pf1e where you heavily focus on having the scariest animal companion you can and fighting alongside them. If you want your typical catch and release Beastmaster you'll want to check out the Tamer archetype.

Characters in ffd20 are significantly more powerful than PF1e and, for the most part, so are the enemies so dont be afraid to through some of the more powerful monsters at them if you're porting them over. My party >>96545767 was consistently beating CR 15/16 creatures at 12(probably the equivalent of fighting cr17/18 creatures in pf1e), though they are pretty loaded with gear and some of the fights were fairly close. You could easily bring in some big boy PF1e monsters and convert them over. I have a house rule that any enemy with the Boss tag gets two initiatives in the fight so they dont get action economied down too hard.

They would fit in right next to 3.5 wizard, cleric, or druid, sure. But FFd20 is supposed to operate on a different level where casters are more reined in.

yeah if I wanted to play this system I would ban freelancers. I wonder why calculator gets segregated to the same section of the SRD

A lot of the posts here have good examples like the Dark Knight and Geomancer, but I think it boils down to:
1) tons of class options
2) MP instead of spell slots, a D&D sacred cow I can't stand
3) classes have many and interesting/impactful abilities as they level up. I'm used to 3/5e crap like "you have +1 on this skill check" or "once per day you can do thing that is not appreciably better than a basic attack or mediocre spell" or outright dead levels.

I also agree with these. It's not necessarily cool that players are more powerful by numbers, but rather that they have more effective and more thematic options available from their classes that aren't just basic combat or the usual repertoire of OP spells.

3 is the big one. Actually no dead levels, very few feat taxes
