Let's talk Underway. Or whatever analog dwarfs should use to get around between their various cities. I always wondered how the fuck they carved them to be so massive.

It's called the Screaming Seas. It's a vast cavernous area under the world that's flooded. Geothermal activity keeps the water near boiling, the steam occasionally blowing through tight cavernous areas like a tea kettle, giving the sea it's name. It acts as a gateway more or less to the world below, which gets weirder and weirder the closer it gets to the world battery. Dwarves traverse it with giant ships of metal, the people that ply those water are a grim and superstitious folk.

Personally I take the "No sleep" thing from Elfs and give it to Dwarfs. Either as-is where they just doze for a few hours per night or altered like they can stay awake for days and then sleep for 24 hours on Sunday. I also make them more resilient to fatigue when they have to make Forced March checks and the like.

I don't really understand where it comes from or what it's supposed to represent and accomplish for Elfs. Elfs live naturally. They don't need to spend tireless days bending the branches of their treetop cities or whatever. They build in and around what's occurring already or the trees themselves bend to home them.

Dwarfs have to carve their space inch by inch and if there's not some innumerable population of workers, doing something like Moria for instance would be an insanely lengthy process even if you bless them with some extra technological advancements like minecarts and cranes and such.

>I always wondered how the fuck they carved them to be so massive.
They probably took advantage of natural caverns. Well that, and it also probably took them thousands of years to finish. They probably weren't always so nice looking.

I always liked the idea that dwarves just take naps whenever possible. It's not like they'd have a reason to have a steady circadian rhythm, what with living underground and all.

For some strange reason, dwarves never developed currency. At most you have the usual bribe of honey bread, beer, or cured meats to smooth over exchanges of goods. However the most this race of women have used coin for, is to hollow them out as stylish armors akin to scale maille just because they look nice.
When elves hire them as mercenaries, they must pay in raw goods.

Tell me of the origins of your dwarves.
For me, the dwarves as they stand are the third and worst iterations of the mortal race of the god SDK. The first dwarves were made of gold and were perfect, with intellect surpassing even the gods. Their forms were determined by the function they would serve and the other races feared them as monsters. This led to a war amongst the gods and their followers until SDK relented and agreed to destroy his children. The second iteration were made of silver, they were supreme sorcrerors and their advanced civilization made even the elves envy them. They integrated among the other races much better, but in their hearts they would never be content knowing they were the second best creations after the gold dwarves. LKR, the son of SDK, agreed and directed secretive cults in the ways of alchemy. However to reach gold, they must first become like that of lead. When their vile and evil practices were discovered the followers of SDK prosecuted righteous war on them, and lost. The silver dwarves tore each other apart and all that remained were the horrid race of lead that still terrorizes the world to this day. SDK, still needing tools to enact his divine plan then made the iron dwarves. Brutish, simple, complacent with their lot in life.

Dwarves are slightly more massive than humans, work harder or longer, and live at a higher altitude and in colder temperatures. They thus eat more, and not just grains like some dysgenic peasant slave. So I'm wondering how they would keep themselves fed without relying so heavily on trade.

I can see farming more nutritiously-dense food on the best soil of the mountain valleys, particularly any that run east-west which get more sunlight, and grow grains and oats and shit in the worse locations, and ranch hardier livestock (like goats and sheep) on the grassy land thats too steep to farm (and extract as much cheese/milk as they could from these). They would have fisheries anywhere they could, including in caves. They would grow mushrooms wherever they could. I don't know if honeybees do well in mountainous areas. They could collect berries and roots and stuff as well, but not at the same scale, likewise with bird meat and venison.

They could trade for fruits and "heavier" meats (like beef and pork), with humans, hobbits, or friendly giants. Mostly stuff thats been dried/smoked/salted, so it lasts the trip and they can stockpile it. Fresh stuff would be expensive delicacies, probably mostly for wealthier dwarves. If they can't make honey, they'd trade for it, since it lasts forever.

Oh, and of course alcohol. They wouldn't be dwarves if they didn't make and consume massive amounts of it; probably all their domestic production of grain/barley. Maybe they'd trade for bulk amounts of grain to make bread with and keep as an emergency food.

Dwarfs would also herd and care for bat colonies.

Both as a source of food and as a source of guano.

The guano is used to fertilize the terraced mountain side they cultivate (because of course they'd terrace the shit out of their mountains) and as one of the ingredients for gunpowder.
Similarly i imagine they're good at managing and reusing their own waste to fertilize their fields while keeping it away from their inhabitated areas and clean water source.

I figure they'd also partake in transhumance, using well defined and cleared paths, their goat/sheep herds guarder by an handful of members from the shepherd's guild.
Minor runes could be used in aiding with food/milk conservation.

My (warhammer) dwarf hold is located in what would be the equivalent of a central-southern italian appenine area. So they grow hardy olive and fig trees as well as grapevine at lower heights, and focus on more woody growth of trees/grazing pastures at higher altitudes.

but seriously the answer is they couldnt
its fantasy
mountains are less fertile
low land has more nutrients
and thats even putting aside that frming has historically been an "almost everyone doing it" affair
industry and fertilizers have changed the game for us but if dorfs need more food they would need a larger percentage of the population being farmers and need to be more spread out as a people

maybe include vertical farming as a thing they do and each hold has a "life chemist" and apprentices
casual observers will assume some frankenstein shit or whatever but in reality its the guys who know how to make fertilizer from minerals (working this out better fertilizers is also what initially led the dorfs to develop gunpowder)
feeding their people being a far more pressing issue than waging war in the elf fashion

I'm really OK with it. Mountain dwarves - standard dwarves (with beards and some muscles), city dwarves - gnomes (shaved and without physical work). And that's all what I need, don't like halflings much. "Symbaroum" has pretty gnomish dwarves (because in Nordic Sagas they were pretty gnomish, as I understand), but I would add The One Ring's aesthetics of Moria with bearded dwarves to Symbaroum's mountains and it would be perfect.

They are all human after all. So you can just take on short race with different cultural traits. The ability to shave shouldn't spawn new races. I think fewer races make your setting more plausible.

Yeah I'd imagine something like picrelated.

With the terraces being developed over the course of centuries.
With rocks and stones removed from the soil (and used both to make the reinforcing dry stone walls and as building materials for roads and fortifications) and additional soils brought in from the digging INSIDE the hold.

Where I grew up they were mostly used for olive trees, vineyards and some stone fruits (apricots and cherries) but in other areas they were used for citruses, apple trees, aromatic trees or even just as a source of grass for smaller flocks of goats/sheep.

it doesn't even require them to have any real understanding of chemistry: just knowing that certain types of rocks, when pulverized, make your crops grow better.

that does make me wonder on the layout of a hold, the surface level would be a fortress, mostly defences and barracks, that would then lead down into the equivalent of a cargo port that manages goods coming and going from the hold , from there I'm never too sure, I would imagine the next thing would be somewhat of a transit level, that branches off and leads to various other sections

A lot of dwarf structures can actually make some semblance of practical sense if you picture them as being built upon cooled lava tubes and magma chambers. Provides a lot of empty space already without having to excavate an entire city block from solid stone.
Honestly with how common it is for art of dwarf cities to involve big lava flumes and fountains seemingly only for aesthetic effect, I'm surprised I haven't seen something deep-dive more into dwarves as true volcanic engineers, managing the flow of lava to slowly bore new tunnels for them over their extremely long lives. Maybe they'd even seed new volcanos right under precious elven forests just to fuck with them.
