>Lefties will tolerate a nazi hiding his power level and nazis will tolerate a marxist leninist as long as the game is fun and it's not about things that are unfun like discussing your personal tastes on politics, music, sports or whatever.
Honestly, the greatest disaster of the internet has been enabling people to filter and ghost their interactions so much more effectively. People are losing the ability to hide their power levels and focus on their commonalities, since they're now conditioned into the idea that you can drop people at the slightest difference and find a replacement within a day or two. Not only does that result in a loss of civility, but you also see the resulting communities--on both sides of whatever aisle you want to focus on--undergo periodic purity spirals.
We've gone from
>Oh, yeah, Bob's a swell neighbor. Don't get him talking about politics, though--I'll just never see eye to eye with him on some things.
to
>Bob? Ugh, why would I talk to Bob? You wouldn't BELIEVE what I heard him say about [topical political figure or event].
Agreeing to disagree has fallen by the wayside, while the very idea of compromise has been trampled into the mud.
