I'm pretty sure hovering is entirely out of the question for any dropship. Spheroids can do perfectly vertical landings, and all dropships can do vertical takeoff (although aerodyne need to make a piloting roll), but I don't think there's any way for them to hover. Maybe an optional rule?

Some truly ingenious Fringe-world engineering, the kind that's wasted on planet which will also equip those things with "wizards".
A truly enterprising fringe warlord would find the creators, give them all the stolen tech he can find & a neuronet for dummies manual & let them create some insane fucking Frankenmechs. But most Pirate-Warlords would blow it to bits & level the creators city first rather than risk the competition, for the best probably. The best for us I mean.
Those cannons do load proper Autocannon rounds though, don't ask me how they get them just heads up, errr down.

Hmm yes, Steiner version of a mobile command vehicle is just a luxury bunker with legs & cannons.
Or it's basic legs & engines could indicate it being a slower, tankier mech that can take on Assault & Superheavy mechs in solely defensive situations whilst still being available to powers that would otherwise be unable to justify such a large machine, like Periphery powers or the Cappellens.
Or it's both, & none Steiner variants replace to ballrooms, ensuites & pools with extra armour, ammo & targeting arrays

MW3 flips the script by making red the color for Large Lasers. I'll have to plug everything into SSW a few hours down the line, but my guess is that Big Al rocks twin LRM10, a trio of LLs split among the torsos, UAC5s in RA and RT and possibly LA, and at least judging from the screenshot an SRM4.

As for the LRM, it's possible it's doing the split thing, but an IS LRM20 weighs more than two 10s combined, and mass is at a premium if my prediction is remotely feasible. Also greater redundancy.

That's why I think the one we see firing is an Ultra and the one in the RT is jammed or something. Ultimately, the artists' creative freedom might have fucked reliable ID beyond hope before either of us ever saw a proper loadout.

With some quick drafting I manage to get a build with:
-Standard Engine 3/5 mover
-19 tons of armor
-3x Large Lasers
-1x UAC5 w 1 ton ammo
-1x LRM20 w 2 tons ammo
-1x SRM4 w 1 ton ammo
-2x MG w 1 ton ammo
All ammo protected by C.A.S.E. in LT with 13 DHS in total.
Not the most exciting build so going to play around with it a bit more. Am finding though that you quickly run out of crit space in the torsos even without touching on weight saving materials.

More likely it's just out of ammo, these guys have clearly been fighted for an extended duration without repair or resupply. Big Al is down to MGs and lasers, we never see the other ballistics or missiles fire.
I dont get it. Why are the weapon sizes on battlemechs so wildly inconsistent? Like the Hunchback has a huge AC 20 on it. But When you put an AC 20 on anything else, it fits within the frame? Why are the large lasers on the Warhammer taking up the entirety of the arms, when other large lasers can fit in the chest or even torsos of a mech?

The white looks pretty clean and good. Slow down a bit on the colors, especially for things like the stripe on the Thunderbolt. There's plenty of room for cleanup but getting white to cover over can be harder than vice-versa. For basecoats neatness is not always required, but you should try to get complete even coverage if you can.
Keep up the good work.

Warhammer uses PPCs. Different manufacturers have different dimensions for their weapons.
AC/20 is just a generalization of the damage and range. A 185mm big bore single shot and a 120mm autocannon that fires in 5rnd bursts can both be AC/20s.

I had to downgrade the UACs to standard AC5s and shave off two tons of armor, but 17 tons remains respectable.
I have also rewatched the intro. It is not consistent at all. Just seconds prior to Big Al's full frontal, the Timby kills infantry and conventionals left and right with red lasers, only to fire blue lasers from the same barrels at Big Al. I believe ultimately we'll have to accept that the animators either didn't know shit or were trolls.

If they want that to actually matter, they should make a rule for it. Fluff is nice, but it has to fucking mean something. Have differences between manufacturers in how their weapons work. Some have buffs or debuffs to certain stats of the weapon. If the weapon takes up an entire arm, give it an accuracy bonus, or it generates less heat. You could do a lot with it and it adds to the lore.
>>96567822
Isnβt that the entire point of Quirks though? You get to introduce more complexity to the game and more flavor to individual mechs without forcing the eternal Introtech holdouts to learn statblocks for 5 different AC manufacturers per weapon size. Your suggestion would be fine from a lore standpoint but terrible from a gameplay perspective, and you can always house-rule it anyway if you want.

You could easily introduce a quirk system for weapon models in addition to mech quirks. Main benefit I see would be in campaign play. Maybe you can't find a hellstar PPC for your marauder, guess you have to settle for a donal, that sort of thing.
I've actually started looking at putting a doc together in my spare time. A lot of TRO entries make some mention as to the qualities of the weapons a mech is equipped with.

6x ERML (Two in each torso, it has a 6 laser array in the chest)
2x LRM-10 w/2t ammo
1x SRM-6 w/1t ammo
1x AC/20 w/2t ammo
2x MG w/0.5t ammo
CASE
Spend the remaining tonnage on HS.

I have a cool idea for a senario involving loads of urbies
>Rouge Liao general gets exiled and takes over a continent on a poorly defended backwater Davion planet and turns it into a banana republic and he works with the mob
>The main character is a self taught mech warrior at the sims at the local arcade, he hates the mob because they harassed hus village as a kid a lot
>The main city is constatly patroled by urbies and other shit box light mechs, mostly mobsters
>The arcade gets raided because a gang was useing it as a hideout so he goes to his hideout, an anandoned davion bunker which he found a few years ago, in it he found an Axman, which was left behind
>He then went on a rampage killing all the urbies and is joined by an undeecover davion noble woman (a secret love child her father had with a kuritan) in her fathers gunsmith and a rouge Taurian rock star turned merc in his griffin
>they retreat to the country side when the terror lances show up.
>They are joined by a true born claner who ran away from her as a child due to accidentally killing several sibkin and was adopted by an innersphere couple and Former member of the generals teoops who quit after the general was too far gone.
>they form a vigilantie group to bring down the mob and general, later teaming up with a Hard old school Russian Liao general and a fopish flashman type steiner noble and merc looking to show off.

Who got hired by the general, after seeing the Axman trashing the place he helped him by blowing up three urbies and a Commando before fleeing with him, he wants to fight so people can have the justice he never got, here his mech. A Mechwarrior, an Aerospace Jockey, and an Elemental walk into the entrance to a bar on a recently captured Spheroid world.
"Ouch." Says the Elemental, rubbing his head. Once the trio have their drinks and are seated, the conversation naturally turns to a discussion of toughness and stoicness.
"I should think both of you would retire in short order if you had to endure the heat of a 'Mech's cockpit during a prolonged engagement." The Mechwarrior asserts.
"Bah! An Elemental is the most physically demanding position for a clan warrior!" The Elemental boasts loudly. "For centuries we have been bred for superior stamina and endurance!"
"All that strength and endurance, and you would not be able to lift a hand to the controls were you in a 10 gravity turn." The aerojock responds smugly, sipping her drink.
"Oh yeah?" Interrupts an obnoxious voice from a nearby table. "Try being a Black woman and a merchant in a world dominated by barbarous Clan warriors like the lily-white Malvina Hazen!"
The three clan warriors turn to each other and nod, before proceeding to eject the merchant from the establishment for daring to interrupt Clan Warriors.

The whole point of the aristocrats is that it's not even funny except for the punchline and the punchline never changes. It's like an anti-joke. You can tell the entire joke with a 30 minute gratuitous description of incestuous necrocoprophilia, or you can just say the punchline by itself. It's only funny if you already know what's coming. Changing the punchline to be setting specific is literally the only thing you need to do to adapt it.

Quirks could have a whole phonebook for the true autistes. Some problems get solved by replacement, some get solved by just reconfiguring the same equipment, some never get solved, sometimes later models add or fix problems, there's a whole world of quirks by production run hidden in the fluff. Sometimes we don't have any answers. The later Clint models are said to have reduced the proprietary part issue (and the fact that they're being widely produced also alleviates it), but then one of the periphery states is producing the original model. Is it truly truly the original model complete with new production proprietary parts, or is it a functional clone using off-the-shelf components to achieve a similar unit? We don't officially know, but we should.

That would make it either a 20/30 or like a 15/23 with MASC or a Supercharger, or a 10/15 with both. In any case, by BT standards that's an engine far outside of the realm of anything that moves on the ground. It would weigh many multiple thousands of tons by itself. Therefore rather than take the 125 tons at face value, it would make more sense to scale the unit down based on how it compares to other mechs in its own franchise. Which iirc it's pretty bulky, my gut feeling would be to make it a 75 ton quad omnimech with particularly fast swaps.

ICE is diesel electric. A big part of the weight of ICE is the fuel tank, by default it stores enough gas to take the unit 600km on a full tank. ICE is already a futuristic space engine with that kind of efficiency. It's just not as good as fusion or hydrogen fuel cell engines.

The average clanner's understanding of history is... limited at best. They're told their culture is self-evidently the best and can't be questioned so why would they even think those guys don't understand it? They might foolishly reject it because they're foolish monarchists, but not even know it? Unthinkable if you aren't one of the nerds who actually know that the way things are is not the way they always were and the split is post-exodus. A lot of clanners think the SLDF had trials and batchalls and isorla and castes because they've never had a reason to ask if it didn't.

In a weird way they are right if you think about it. They're basically raised on the ideal of what they thought the Star League was and dueling was a huge part of it outside of the Amaris Coup. The whole First Hidden War where Ronin dueled SLDF Gunslingers fits into the Clan ideals of ritualized warfare if you think how many times it probably has been retold with each retelling drifting further from the reality. If this is what you have as a point of reference why would you think things would be different?

The playtest rules result in a 14% increase to side hits when shooting at the side arc. Most of the times you'd still want to shoot at the rear arc, given how much less armor mechs have in the rear. If the mech has already lost armor in one side torso and has XLFE or its main weapon on that side, then it's worth it to stick to that side and try fishing for crits, since when shooting from rear some of the hits will go to the opposite side torso.

Playing with an idea for my next campaign game, I'm thinking a strike on an off world backline maintenance depot. My player will have up to two companies of mechs plus support vehicles, so I'll scale the opposition based on that. For the core of the scenario I'm thinking a few fixed turrets, some mid weight vees, and a partially repaired lance of assault mechs. The main objective will be destruction of enemy infrastructure, with secondary objective of capturing and carrying off as much material as possible before enemy reinforcements arrive.
What's a good quartet of 3rd succession war assaults that aren't likely to explode early and don't have to close to range to deliver the majority of their firepower? I don't have a longbow so that's right out.

Thing is, while the rear have less armor, you have 8 posible locations. With the side table, you have 5 locations. The rear is still good if you have a weapon that is capable of making a penetrating hit in those side torsos.

I believe they're going to push through with the changes regardless of playester input. I also think this whole thing is superfluous when they plan to add the old tables as either an optional rule in the new rulebook or in a NuTacOps book as an "advanced" table to replace the one already in TacOps that gives you rear shots on the flanks.

Quick batrep of a game I played this weekend
>Lore
Someone fucked up their drops and a PDF captured a Mars. Clanners need to kill to prevent great dishonor. Played on the Alien Worlds lunar base map, IS starting on the green dome end, clanners walking in from the other side
>Forces
15k bv, mostly civil war era units but some 3100s stuff snuck in
Clans: Clan Wolf augmented(?) star
Timber Wolf N (3/4)
Dire Wolf E (3/4)
Vapor Eagle 5 (3/4)
Fire Moth H (3/4)
uPL Elementals (sqd6) (2/3)
Fire Moth E (3/4)
AP Gauss Elementals (sqd6) (2/3)
Vs mixed IS units:
Capellan Combined Arms Rgt (4/5 unless otherwise specified)
2x lances of 4 Scorpion Light Tanks (Armor upgrade)
Partisan Heavy Tank
2x LRM Carrier (3/5)
3x Karnov w/ 2x LRM Jump Platoon ea
2x Mechbuster (3/4)
+ asstd. MWDA units
Mars (HAG)
Hanse MBT
Griffin 4N
Blade XL (3/5)
(Friend and I were each bringing 7.5k of our units so our clanner friend could play a full 15k pts, we just activated and played as if one person, handling resolving our own units.)
Turn 1) Capellan rgt starts on the board (we were using the stratops simplified aerospace rules, so aero assets plod on and show up turns 3/5/7 etc), Mars does as well, rest of the MWDA units move on as reinforcements along with the VTOLs. 4/6 of the jump inf get dropped off on midmap buildings, others stay in their bird to get a deeper flank. Fire Moths both sprint forward stupidly fast and run up on a pair of the inf, kill most of a platoon with some lasers and missiles. LRM carriers drop smoke and augmented FASCAM, blocking off LoS (we were pretty sure LRM-20 smoke is radius 2, ie, 17 hexes covered based on rulebook RAW, but maybe its supposed to just be 7?), leaving some nice smoke-hidden minefields blocking paths down the side alley and entrance to the main crater of the map. Third volley (you can have multiple secondary targets right) went directly on the two sidebyside Fire Moths to try to force them to move through it).

Turn 2)
Clan player goes to great lengths to avoid stepping on mines, moves up very gingerly into smoke. Vapor eagle jumps on one in the alley regardless, eats 10 to a leg. Fire Moths continue to zoom, one taking cover out of LoS of the combinedarms and dropping off its elementals there, the other quickly getting behind the LRM carriers and dropping its friends off as well
Smoke cover prevents any long-range direct fire from the vapor eagle, timberwolf, or daishi, though the fire moth spots for some LRM fire (all of which misses). The fire moth H also dumps all its heavy lasers into the rear arc of an lrm carrier, but at long range, after running, while spotting, and hits nothing. Partisan (running close protection for the LRM carriers) introduces the fire moth to 4x precision AC5s and cripples it. Mars also moves to fire on the elementals dropped off by the moth H, exposing its rear arc to the fire moth E and its friends. Scorpions continue to blast randomly at anything in LoS, dealing minimal damage. LRM carriers fire off a second round of smoke and non-augmented FASCAM, plonking down some high strength minefields in front of the path the daishi and timberwolf are on, and further cordoning them off with another massive wall of heavy smoke. Still very few real casualties.
Turn 3) Fire Moth E and its elementals move up on the rear arc of the mars, dump HEATMs and SRMs into it, get a TAC and engine crit, already securing the cripple for clanside. Scorpions/partisan clean up the other elementals and fire moth, hanse moves to clear the elementals firing on the mars but donβt get a chance as the mechbuster comes in for a dive bombing, dropping an unguided arrow IV on the as-of-yet unharmed elemental pack and completely obliterating it. Second mechbuster drops both its arrow IVs on the timber wolf, visible in the gap between the smokescreens, for a cool 40c5 damage on it. Timberwolf continues to only be able to provide LRM support.

Do you mean like "OH GOD THIS IS SCARY!" but in reality they can be quite easy to beat type mechs if running a campaign? Assuming don't want to be too cruel the following.
Panther and Jenner when they're separate. Together I'd consider them a mini boss fight.
Hermes II makes a good general trooper to throw in as can be either the linchpin of a lighter lance or a goon in a heavier lance.
Whitworth and Wyvern make good mooks even if people tend to underestimate them. They can also stand as a mini boss if playing a light game.
The basic Centurion the 9A can be good as the AC/10 gives it some threat but people tend to forget the protection on the thing is garbage so they overestimate it. Similar reason also why the Treb and Dervish can be good for mooks as you can't really ignore their missiles but basically have no armor.
I would also say Osts can be good mooks to fight but with the caveat to not play with quirks if using them, otherwise they're suddenly tanky as fuck and you've turned the game into nightmare mode.
Phoenix Hawks, Wolverines and Griffins can make excellent mooks if running heavier lances or need a boss for a lighter one.
Going heavier if you want a mook boss as it were then 6R, K or L Warhammer can be a good choice as loads of firepower but 10 tons of armor only means you going to be chopping it to bits. Cyclops also can fill this role for same reason if using 10-Z and if you want a tanky boi that doesn't have too much damage output then 10-Q.
If you need a tanky mook boss 2R Archer can be decent as it'll soak damage but won't be putting out as much as you'd think.
I am tempted to say Banshee can be a good mook if you using 3M or 3MC but most people don't tend to respect it.

I forgot but somewhere in turn 2 the vapor eagle kills a scorpion in first blood for the clans. Woot
Turn 4 the clans continue to advance under heavy fire, as the fire moths and elementals are completely eliminated, but only the vapor eagle has any real shots to make, since the other two are still deep in smoke and trying to avoid mines. IS units bundle up around the engine-out mars, LRM carriers deal a minimal amount of damage the timber wolf after the infantry hiding in the building its next to spot for it. Another infantry platoon tickles the daishi for 3 damage and promptly eats an alpha strike from it and dies.
Turn 5: Advance continues, timberwolf gets on top of the already damaged scorpion lance, rakes the griffin with fire and opens up a couple of its locations. Vapor eagle tries to alpha the mars from the front instead of flanking, does 20 or so damage to the untouched 105 frontal armor. Eats fire from just about everything else on the field, plus the last Arrow IV off the mechbuster. The other mechbuster cracks the right leg of the TW open with an AC-20 shot, gets a pair of crits inside the leg and trips it from the PSR.
We call the game here as a draw, since the clans achieved their partial win con (crippled the target), but were absolutely going to lose everything in the next couple turns, facing down a force untouched besides some superficial armor damage, cracked but not critted griffin, and a single dead scorpion and inf. platoon to their name.
Not really sure why the clans player skimped on anti air - we told him beforehand we were going to have vtols and air assets, shared our entire lists about 2 weeks before. I fully expected to lose the mechbusters instantly to a rifleman iic or the like. The mines felt a bit cheesy, but in the end they cost a few hundred bv for like 30 damage across 3 mechs, which is about par I think. Smoke against slower mechs, on the other hand, is completely busted.

> This smoke varies in density and size with the damage capacity of the launcher used. For every 10 points of damage a Smoke Missile would deliver
as a standard missile volley (rounded up), the radius of the smoke-filled area increases by 1 hex (so an LRM-5, with its 5 points of damage, would fill only 1 hex [Radius = 5 Γ· 10 = 0.5, round up to 1], while an SRM-6, with 12 points of damage as a standard munition, would fill the target hex and each adjacent hex [Radius = 12 Γ· 10 = 1.2, round up to 2]). This smoke is treated as Light Smoke if the weapon delivers 5 points or less in damage to the target hex. Otherwise, it is treated as Heavy Smoke.
You donβt roll cluster, but also it seems like theyβre saying βradius 1β is one hex and βradius 2β is 7 even though normally βradius 0β is 1 hex and βradius 1β is 7

Yeah, this game is easily played with proxies or chits. You'll want to have a clearly designated front hex face for each unit. Even some of the actual models struggle with that. The worst is when the model is facing a hex corner without clearly favoring either side.

When smoke drifts it stacks like that, so presumably any source of additive light+light smoke produces this result. I donβt think, however, any RAW supports, eg, firing 4 LRM5s at a hex and treating it as an LRM-20 for the purpose of AoE.

Sending one page of text from one HPG to another costs 1 cbill. Don't worry about any compression techniques, the writers didn't know about them. Another HPG has to relay the message if the destination is more than 50 lightyears away, which costs another c-bill.

1 millisecond of transmission time, roughly 4kilobytes transmitted 50Ly
>Is there a formula for calculating how many days a HPG message from A to B will take?
When they get around to sending it. Low priority worlds/messages might sit in the queue for a week before they sent out. Highest priority messages are sent almost instantly. A message needs to be sent, received, transcribed, and resent every 50 light years. Unless it's a high priority message, it's first come first serve, so if your message goes through a particularly busy world it might end up sitting behind a few thousand other messages.

First ever mech battle in the books, on the grimy old d&d pad. Quick start rules so only basic mechanics, and we didn't use any terrain besides that deck box in the middle.
We had a lot of fun and I finished the fight with double 12 rolls. Blew his head clean off with a full volley from my LRM 15. Needless to say I'm going to be diving deep into this game. Checking now if they make display model kits of the little comando that won my first game so decisively, even if it was in the training sim.

I didn't realise the sheets for the intended tutorial mechs were in the pdf I downloaded so I quickly googled balanced teams and found those printouts. I basically learned the rules and put everything together with friends, with music and booze as distractions. Evidently we weren't meant to learn about cluster damage yet, but I'm glad we did lol.
I was thinking a decent way to distribute terrain on the mat would be toss a couple handfulls of d6 on the map and place woods where they land. 3 and lower is lightly wooded and above is thick woods. Obviously you could copy maps from the internet, or design them to be balanced but I like randomness.
