/awg/ ⟅Alternative Wargames General⟆
>Previous thread:
>>96530643

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

Recommend me a good low-fantasy warband-level game. I want a system with no fancy totally-not-Warhammer units. Just your classic archers, spearmen, cavalry and magic users for evergreen fantasy races like Elves, Orcs and Humans. Oathmark would perfectly check all the boxes if it wasn't for the rank-and-file movement and size. I want something with 15-30 minis per player tops.

Was good, a bit short but the game plays fast. which is convenient for after work but isn't as satisfying as a longer game. Playing Space Battles with someone who has limited wargame experience but we're having fun. Going to start adding light houserules to include close-enough spaceship movement with inertia and turning instead of everyone zipping around in any direction all the time.
Overall goal is to get them to a planet invasion and run that with a different wargame.

Examples of games with randomly constrained decision space, eg roll to see which of move / shoot / react a dude can do each turn. It seems somewhat common in board games. I think What a Tanker has it, and Fivecore does to an extent with its run / shoot / normal turns.
Not just randomised number of actions like SoBaH and the like. Nor random special command cards and the like.

3rd ed started out alright but as they added weirder units the amount of special rules became rediculous, and most games were decided Turn 1/2.

These are the original priest caste of the Spires. They left because they were disgusted by how the Exiles' life magic was being abused to make troops for the war with the dragons. So they made the Dwarves for the dragons as a peace offering, and went and started harmonizing their magic with the elemental magics of the planet. Now, instead of using it to make clones, they use the magic to meld themselves with aspects of the elements and nature.

>40 Quid for that shitty little sprue set is a rip off,

It is, since its just 7 unique figures, and i will play the devils advocate here, despite hating the set:
It makes sense from WGAs perspective to charge more for it. (ignoring that the money goes to the Dave guy from MWG)
Its 3 unique sprues, so 3 times the work to make them (they are their small-ish half sprue i think, but still).
A regular box like their halfling snipers or werewolves (afaik those use the same smaller sprue size) includes 5 times the same sprue. This box has 3 unique ones. While its less plastic, production is more expensive because the machine cant just spit out 25 sprues in a row to make 5 boxes, but they have to change the tool 3 times to make the same amount of boxes.

That said, i think by buying 3 different random WW1 sprues from ebay, despite the resellers markup, will give you 3x 6 figures with way more variation and options for less than 40 bucks. Also way (!) better poses too. Those are the really bad thing about this box. The top right guy on that pic (>>96575423).. wtf is this shit. It looks retarded, but the paintjob does not help either. I'd take pic related all day over that.

All in all, its the vanity project of a youtube wannabe celebrity, so i can look over it in a way. Being mormons, its way to niche and too gimmicky for me to be interested in it even if the sculpts would have been great, but since they suck, i would not even buy it for 10.

But i'm honestly happy for Dave, if this made a dream come true for him, by having his very own plastic set. And if i had the spare cash to make WGA make a set for me personally, i would not care about other peoples opinions either.

I like the idea and aesthetics of Warmachine but hate resin miniatures and I hate its pricing outside of the starter boxes. one of the problems is that a fully buffed and loaded heavy warjack/warbeast is often capable of killing another one, so you run into a 'nothing survives first contact' problem

>I only know about their main store and the second-hand store.

They have their 2nd hand store, "tabletop ankauf" & "tabletop verkauf" where they buy and sell used minis. Their "verkauf" listings are usually mirrored on ebay as well, sometimes not everything is listed on both plattforms.

From time to time (i follow them on ebay for years actually), they seem to want to get rid of some stuff that isn't selling fast enough, so they list them as auctions. There are periods in between with no auctions at all, and then they let hundreds run for a given period, and usually those items sell for quite cheap, compared what they usually list them for. I got some nice deals there in the past

Wild West stuff always jumps to mind. Literally hundreds of tiny range wars between farmers and ranchers. Indian raids. Criminal Gangs. Citizen Vigilance Committees.

Gang wars in general seem great for scale skirmish games. And those have been a thing in various forms for as long as there have been cities. Whether it's drug cartels and bikers or Ea-nāṣir and his Babylonian mooks fighting over bad copper.

Like if Vikings sound cool, look up the raid at Lindesfarne or Stamford Bridge.
If 19th century shootouts sound cool look up the OK corral, Raid on Harper's Ferry or the Battle of Coffeyville.

You might want to be not specific with you questions.
Add a heads up though, if you're looking to "recreate" anything pre-modern you're pretty much going to have to invent it from whole cloth as things were only recorded in the most general terms and usually exaggerated.
