New to 3d printing and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, have had several failures like this and tried with a few different models. My printer is a QIDI shadow 5.5s and I'm using lychee to make the print files and the resin I'm using is sunlu solid grey water wash and resin

It is wearing a gas mask, but it has exposed ears. I want to deform the ears so that they register as "balaclava ear bumps."
What's the best way to go about accomplishing that in Blender?

For bottom layers, set the light off time to 30 and the exposure time to 10 (or whatever works reliably; I use 6), set the lift height to 10 and the lift speed to 60.
For normal layers, set the light off time to 6, exposure time to whatever you've calibrated (4 seems high, but I've no experience with water washable resin (which you shouldn't use)) and lift height to 8.

Longtime FDM Printer here, occasional metal caster, looking for something to make statue parts with, I hear the metal casting resins work well.
Anyone here have recommendations for a moderately larger size printer, resolution can be on the lower side given I don't have vacuum casting equipment to make the most of it. Or at least models I should avoid on the used market would help.

So I'm a /toy/ soldier in addition to a fa/tg/oblin; I'd initially gotten into printing for tabletop stuff as most of us did, but I've also been interested in printing toy parts, which spiralled into trying to make full action figures held together with Hobby Base joint sprues. Then I discovered Resione's Tough74 and TH-BJD resin (these Marines are the latter; they're the same stuff in different colours) and found it's actually possible to make poseable figures entirely out of the stuff with no non-printed parts at all. (It's also really tough and very well suited to tabletop minis, incidentally.)
To cut a long story short, I'm thinking of making some 1/18 scale 40K figures to go with the JoyToy range using the stuff. I wanna make some non-Primaris Marines for sure, but any other ideas? I'm thinking some Eldar (Craftworld and Dark) would be fun.

Necrons might be interesting, but will you try doing stuff like Dreadnoughts too?
Anonymous No.96635666 [Report]
>>96635559
I certainly could! I want to start off with infantry-scaled stuff to begin with as this is still quite uncharted territory, but it's certainly not outside the realms of possibility. In terms of bigger things I have a few ideas:
>Castraferrum Dreadnought (Mk. V and Mk. IV)
>Wraithlord
>Carnifex
>Deff Dredd/Killa Kan
I'd probably stick to "fits on a 60mm base" for big guys, though if I ever get an FDM machine or if I find myself feeling extremely daring (or find a good way of breaking down the hull into smaller parts without obvious hard to fill seams) I might try my hand at making a Rhino chassis.
Just out of interest, what would be the limit for non-printed parts necessary to complete a really big figure (like a Dreadnought)? My current test models have been 99% printed, with 1mm wire pins for joint reinforcement, though I've been trying to phase those out, but those have been "regular" size. I'd like to avoid requiring any components that can't be very easily sourced (simple machine screws, wire, magnets etc).

You get answers like "either" because neither is really true. It used to be about 28mm, but things have steadily been increasing in size, and not just the marines as they went primaris. I think current catachan are ca 30mm to the eye. So if you have scans of uncertain scaling that you want to get right then you basically have to get measurement of those specific minis to use.

Shells is not officially supported in .stl, but people use professional modelling software where you can group things together as an object (or shell). When those programs export the mini as an .stl its formatted by the software to keep the shells so another person can open up the file press a few buttons in their software and the shells are back. If you have software that deals exclusively with .stl they probably wont be able to access the shells. Slicers like lychee and simply3d can find the shells.

Setup takes time, and depending on the process, materials. I'm not eating the costs if it takes me three hours to set your mess up to cut. Same with any other aspect of the process.
If you want to get quoted a single price per item or batch, you are going to pay a lot more because all the potential extrinsic but somewhat unavoidable costs need to be accounted for. The only way to avoid this with a vendor is to have someone you trust, who trusts you, with a process between you. Or DIY.

Stupid question and I can't believe I'm asking this given how long I've been doing this, but does an object have to be completely unified into a single mesh if I want to print it? I always boolean parts together when I design stuff to print, which means if I want to make variants of one part I have to make copies of the base part and then boolean the extra bits onto those, which takes a long time; could I theoretically skip that and just export the parts I wanted (via "selection only") as one object assuming I didn't create any voids in the process? I use Blender for most of my design and Lychee for slicing. I'm wary ever since some of LoggyK's excellent LOOKING Marine helmets turned out to have resin-traps in them and exploded on me.

Use meshmixer and selet all the parts (fter positioning) then hit "combine" under the edit tab, super fast.
It too has a boolean union option but that takes a lot longer. using "Combine" keeps the shells separate as well.

Ah nice, will have to try that. And yes, that's the word, shells.
Can you hollow an STL prepared that way? I assume it can define the exterior of the model as a whole and determine a continuous cavity from that- it wouldn't try and hollow every single shell? Sorry if these are dumb questions- I've gotten pretty knowledgeable with the actual chemical and mechanical side of printing, and I can use 3D software pretty well but the way it actually works is a mystery to me and I might be missing a few tricks by "playing it safe" due to not understanding these things properly.

>but does an object have to be completely unified into a single mesh if I want to print it?
I've found that it tends to give less problems with certain slicers. I've had instances in which anycubic would say -this file may print wrong- and after auto-repairing, the junctions between volumes of different shells would be hollow, leaving air pockets in the print, creating spectacular failures.

Ever since then I always "make solid" anything that I print that has more than one shell to combine them.

>Marine helmets turned out to have resin-traps in them and exploded on me.
Use UVTOOLS for that. A quick pass on the sliced file will detect islands, resin traps, overhangs, you name it. It will also let you manually fill in pixels (a really useful feature) but only use it as a last ditch; since you won't be able to modify the files in the slicer without having to paint the pixels again.

>>96647070
>It too has a boolean union option
I have used it instead of "make solid" and it sometimes would leave small little gaps that would make junctions weaker. I'll have to play a bit more around it

>>96647104
>Can you hollow an STL prepared that way?
No, you can't hollow a multi-shelled STL. The program won't know where the outside is when the meshes collide. I don't know if the "boolean union" allows for hollowing. It probably does

Pic related. It's a mix of scans and parts that I combined and "made solid" before printing it whole.

Between the shoulders and the torso (the junction) I inserted spheres that would fill in the gaps to ensure no air trapped. Same thing with the neck.

The body is a scan of a comissar. The plasma arm is from the krieg kill team. The fist is from TinyLegends, and so is the helmet; and I had to autistically remove the hoses from it because it looked awful with a back filter.

My pc doesn't *need* to be replaced, really. It's a gaming laptop from 2019 but I also don't do anything particularly performance intensive on it, beyond some indie games which it handles well enough. Although, maybe I would do more performance intensive things if I actually had the horsepower.

>curated collection of scans already available
It was 100ish files, no leaks though, the youtuber made that up for clicks. 80% were good quality scans, the other 20% were 1:1 proxies from other creators (which I know because I'd already got them from the original sources), which the guy shared for free (bit of a dick move imo). And while there were indeed many scans, just to put it into context it was far from a curated collection - the files were a hodgepodge of different factions so you would have really struggled to make a full army from the 100ish uploads, and fwiw they were only a small fraction of the scans that are actually out there. I think the guy just uploaded whatever was at the top of his list on his hard drive or something. And as others have said, he was just reuploading stuff that can be found already, albeit under way more obscure names and fragmented across many uploaders.

The guy who made the video about them (what the fuck kind of grown man calls himself "mikey") is a thin-skinned cunt who gets embroiled in any internet drama he can and spergs out at people when they offer the slightest critique of something he said or did. I avoid his toxic bullshit like the plague. He's also making this video over a week late and sensationalizing the events for attention, which has confused a bunch of newbies into thinking GW's master STLs have been let loose in the wild when that's absolutely 100% not happened, ever. Absolutely useless waste of hobby community space.

Disingenuous. They also say the files were available for 2 hours but they weren't, it was closer to 12. It's true that the account got about 200k downloads in that time though, I kept refreshing their profile and having a laugh at how quickly the number was going up. >What would be the best slicer software for a linux machine?
Orca is fine. There is a flatpak of bambu studio if you wanna use that.
Some tips.
Start with fat dragon's print profile but set the resolution to a much lower number, you'll retain more detail that way.
Auto supports generally suck tons of cock, the only way to not get scarred up dogshit prints is to use resin-style supports. I do mine in Blender with a custom setup but you can generate them in a resin printer slicer (0.2mm contacts, 2mm pillars) and export them as a mesh which you then slice in an fdm slicer.
For post-processing the layer lines, nothing really works except sanding them. Gloss primers hide them a bit but not on the worst spots like round top surfaces.
Anonymous No.96676105 [Report] >>96676137
>>96676093
You can get filler primers that greatly reduce the amount of sanding required, but the best method is to just get a smaller extruder nozzle and do smaller layer heights.

Anonymous No.96676488 [Report]
>>96676412
Entirely fair. I prefer FDM since its the more familiar platform for me, and its fun to tinker but I still break out my mars if I really want something to look nice.

Speaking more generally, technically FDM can do some properly unhinged stuff, like sub 2 minute near flawless benchies and resin quality prints via a 0.1mm nozzle, but the parts to actually do these sorts of things are so scattered, new, expensive and sometimes one of a kind currently that its a bit pointless to bring up.
And a lot of ideas are currently unexplored. I'm still waiting on literally anyone to try putting a marker pen head adjacent to the print head so they can just put ink on the top of supports to prevent layer adhesion instead of all this goofy multimaterial supports. Seriously, this was shit I manually back in highschool a decade ago and no one has bothered automating it.
FDM is going to get a lot better for miniatures, but waiting on it is frustrating.

Anonymous No.96676533 [Report]
>>96676494
I would highly recommend breaking up your models into separate legs, torsos, arms, heads and backpacks whenever possible. It both cuts down on the number of failures, but also the amount of overhangs and supports needed. For FDM, either you want something that's designed from the beginning to be printed as one piece, or something that gives you a bunch of little pieces that can be orientated easily to minimize supports.
Anonymous No.96677270 [Report]
More printing-adjacent but for anyone interested I've found Siraya Defiant 25 silicone does exactly what it says on the tin and has no issues with cure inhibition with 3D printed resin. I know for most cases printing is superior to casting anyway but for select uses I can see it being nifty- for example, printing a whole kit in opaque resin and any parts you want to be clear you can sand/polish to remove layer lines and then make a mould and cast in a decent clear epoxy rather than faffing about with printing clear resin (especially if you only have one printer and one vat and don't fancy swapping resins), or if you wanted to make metal castings of a 3D master- though you'd need to make a regular cast-resin copy and then make a new mould from heat-resistant rubber, as Defiant 25 isn't suitable for metal. Also in my case as someone into making toys of my toy soldiers (I'm >>96635459) I can cast parts in polyurethane resin to make flexible components rather than having to go through the nightmare of printing flexible resin, which IIRC is notoriously finicky to print.

Looking for some input on a resin printer to buy. I tried to refer to the Resin Printer pastebin but the info. in there is from 2021/2022 and while its helpful, doesn't really help with the more modern printers. Here's a few questions I hope folks can answer:

1. In your experience has cleanup of a resin printer after a print been a pain with the Elegoo printers vs. the Anycubic ones, or is the cleanup going to be a pain no matter what?

2. How far away is the hobby from getting "next years" printers? Do they tend to do yearly refreshes of the printers or put out a brand new one every couple years while the older generation matures and gets it issues worked out?

3. If my use case is mainly going to be for tabletop minis and slightly larger monster figures (at most 6 inches tall) will a smaller print bed be fine, or should I go to the medium size printers that are in the 9-10 inch range?

4. Any features or gimmicks you like on your current printer (or ones you thought would be useful but turned out to be a pain)?

For reference my budget is looking to be in the 500-700 USD range for the printer itself, with another 100-200 for resin, curing booths, washing beds, cleaning fluids, etc.

Most of the strength of the FDM print is dependent on the wall thickness of the print, and infill only increases in importance when you have large values for it. It also depends on the type of infill you are printing. If you're printing for something that won't carry a lot of weight, 5-10% is more than enough. I'd rather do 1.2 mm thick walls and 5% infill than have 0.8 walls and 20% infill.

Infill types are important as well. Gyroid infill is strong in all directions. Lightning infill is probably the lightest one you can use since it only serves to support top layers and is mostly hollow enough.
Anonymous No.96703881 [Report] >>96704854

For me, bigger is better. I started with a 6 in one and I hated it. Went with a Saturn 3 10 inch and it was so much better and saved more time.

Essentially you can print twice the amount with a 10 in printer than a 6 in one, and that also means less cleanup per plate and less total printing time. Additionally, fitting and filling a 10 in plate is so much easier than filling a 6 in one. Anecdotally, if a print fails in one area of a large plate, it won't affect something far away. Smaller plates won't have that luxury.

Bigger models might have worse resolution (a 12K 6 in will get you more detail than a 12K 10 in) but at the end of the day, the print gets covered in primer and the fine details get removed anyway.

If the Saturn 3 Ultra is cheap then get that, it's perfectly adequate and you should spend the money saved on getting a proper set up with an exhaust fan and a grow tent
Next gen printers won't give you anything you need and will just be a lot more expensive
That said idk what the price difference between the Saturn 3 Ultra and the Saturn 4 Ultra is in your country, maybe the Saturn 4 Ultra would be a good pic but some people complain about reliability with the 4

just keep in mind that the arachne mode, if you use it, will not work with most of the quality/slowdown adjustments in your filament settings. You'll have to tune that on your own via the overhang and bridging speeds. Or enforce special speeds with modifier parts or layer height modifications. If you're going to go for fat walls, which it sounds like you are, that'd be the mode to do it in. Classic wall generator will look shitty with thick walls. Alternatively you could do more wall passes with thinner walls to balance detail and appearance preservation, have more forgiving cooling needs, and keep strength. Downside would be the hit you take to print speed.
Anonymous No.96706329 [Report]
>>96703852
Whatever you get, I'll warn you, nobody tells you the importance of waits. Resin is thick gooey stuff. Waterwash especially, and that is why waterwash gets a bad rep. Everyone is ignorant to tuning waits. You need time for your chemical reactions to finish for a smooth release, you need time for the resin caught under the bed or caught on the next layer to even out naturally. You need time for new resin to flow into the freshly made voids. Those settings are "Wait before cure(wait before print)", "wait before release (wait after print)", "wait after release (wait after lift)" and people keep this knowledge to themselves like black magic. Most of the movement between of the Z-axis, the tuning people do, is inadvertently tuning these factors instead of doing it directly. If you get a tilt-release printer, it's doubly important to understand these are the real workhorses under the hood. Manufactures keep advertising insane speeds with extra-fluid resins, best case scenarios, because millimeters per second helps sell printers to print farms.

If you want better prints, whatever you get, try 3/2/3. Good results? Try 2/1/2. Good results? Try 1.7/1/2. Good results? 1.7/1/1.5 (for normal layers)

The biggest problems occur on bottom layers. Even if you keep the default times for normal layers (defaults are 1.5/0/0, delays for before and after release are considered adequate from screw/tilt motion) you will want buffed up times for the first 5-6 bottom layers. Like 20/1/2.

Why 20 wait before cure for bottom layers? The huge surface area of the build plate is a ton of force on the LCD. With only the area at the edges of the build plate being a place for the resin to escape. This means most people start curing before the plate is done moving and level. You get half-cured goo moving outward in all directions (pancaking) and worse, as it cures, it also pushes into the LCD with even more pressure.
Anonymous No.96706417 [Report]
>>96677508
Largely overstated fears with modern resins. Influencers quite rightly release if the bar is less than pants shittingly scary, people will treat it like it is no more dangerous than using paint thinner without gloves. Just put the whole thing into a grow tent like you would use for "tomato" farming. Replace a window pane for your garage door with a plastic exhaust port. Or leave it cracked open and aim a fan under the door. If grow tent isn't an option, filter the air in the garage with an ikea FÖRNUFTIG.

My biggest fear with the Saturn 4 (and the Elegoo stuff in general) is LCD screen replacement. As someone that's built PCs and torn apart laptops to replace broken screens I know how frustrating and time consuming that process is.

I also really like the idea of a phone app to track progress on a print. And I've been watching videos from multiple people on the current gen of printers and they all say Anycubic really improved their QC with this generation of printers.

>>96706239
I could care less about print speed, i want it to look smooth and finished after its done printing and curing, I'm more than willing to fool around with times and settings to dial in my prints to get done with as little clean-up or sanding done as possible.

anycupic resin printers will also need screen replacements?

I bought a returned saturn 4 and had to change the screen right away. There is a good video for it, the only hard part was that I needed to torch it a bunch with a heatgun because the glue was so tough. But the good thing with that is that when the screen is broken, nothing sensitive is near to it so you can just go ham.
Regarding the app, there is "resin control", an app with which you should be able to control them as long as they have wifi, like the sat 4 ultra, but I have not tried it yet.

Only then can you worry about figuring out how thick your supports need to be or how small your contact tips can be. I'd only do it your way if I was determined to caveman things with strong supports right out the gate and enjoy the golf-ball style marks all over my minis.

And I'm saying you can get all of that dialed in without wasting material on some stupid gigantic chunk of nothing, you can use an actual mini to get all your settings right and then USE THAT MINI.

The new cones of calibration is probably more useful for people printing minis (especially the clearances tests).

The size of that test is a bit overkill, but there are very good reasons to use tests, not minis.

They help you dial in, and one failed or bad print means you need to clean up and loose way more resin by it.

Baseline prints are comparable between resins, printers. users, so if you find yourself needing help you can give people something to compare to.

Is it viable to resin print miniature bits? Do you get visible gaps when using a superglue so you also need to fill them with green stuff/goo etc?

>Is it viable to resin print miniature bits?
Usually yes.

>Do you get visible gaps when using a superglue so you also need to fill them with green stuff/goo etc?
Depends on if the stl files fit properly, the shrinkage/warping characteristics of the resin, if the bits were deformed during print for whatever reason...

Generally anons seem to find it easier to just assemble the bits digitally and print whole minis.
Though I did recently print the scanned GW ambot bits to then assemble with superglue, there were so many that it was easier to work out what went where physically post-print on that one.

That's what I had in mind. What software do you use for that, Blender?
I'll get 5 characters but they're 10 bits each, and gaps worry me since on plastic the plastic cement melts it.

I guess this is some interesting information:

https://www.myminifactory.com/tribes/Ghamak/posts/Games_Workshop_Is_Suing_Me-81126

In all honesty, i dont think this guys models are "that" close to GWs designs, or "that" good for that matter. Lots of overdetailed stuff, but i guess he has his fans.
But here are many other STL creators out there, way closer to GWs factions than Ghamak, so there is probably a lot going on behind the scenes.
The most interesting bit for me was that MMF actually refused to follow GWs orders (you would expect a plattform like them to try to appease and try to avoid any trouble).

I don't think GW has any leg to stand on legally. If this was going anywhere they could tell random sculptors to give up their livelyhood. The demands are just posturing to bully someone with a smaller legal warchest into submission. It's a common tactic to just financially ruin small businesses by weaponizing the legal system before it even comes to a verdict.

I think they are probably going after him specifically though because a lot of his sculpts dip into the less family friendly "pinup" side of things. Arguably in slightly less good taste than some other sculptors. Considering GW is targeting (single?) mothers now it's maybe not that surprising. (it's what the former product designer for GW said on that podcast with Chris Peach so don't yell a ME about it. Guess parking your kids in a GW store is cheaper than a babysitter)

Wrong, fully nude women is a hallmark of classic cultured art going back to ancient antiquity.
The only poor taste is GW marketing ugly mannish beasts as being "female" which is an attack on clean and healthy society.

MMF do things properly through DMCA and if you fight it and GW doesn't follow up on it they go back up. As opposed to cults where they just take everything down no questions asked and with no recourse because they can't be fucking bothered

Absolutely nobody on this forum, or any other forum, understands the intricacies of italian IP law.
Anonymous No.96721791 [Report] >>96721902

The assumption that there is anything to understand is faulty. Things end up in court because there are two sides who present arguments for their interpretation of the law. If it was a clear cut issue that you can just parse with logic you wouldn't need lawyers to argue each side.
Especially with IP law it's basically up to the people in the room to make decisions based on gut feeling and however they feel that day. How closely can this cartoon mouse resemble the other? There are no rules set in stone when it comes to that stuff.

GW is a weird case anyway since their setting is basically just Starship Troopers, Dune and the war in heaven with a ton of pop culture, historical and literary references. They have these newfangled retarded names everywhere now to make it more distinct. If they have to go through the entire catalog of Ghamak minis and if he made minis for something they haven't made minis for before they could even lose the ability to make those models in the future themselves. It's a big risk to actually go to court with this. It's the The Chapter House lawsuit all over again. They didn't get a clean win and that guy wasn't even trying to use cute alternate names or anything either.
Anonymous No.96721902 [Report]

>It's the The Chapter House lawsuit all over again

This. GW counts on Ghamak (and probably others) to give up, because they either cant afford the year long legal fight, or they dont want to risk loosing eventually after a year long legal fight. For small businesses if this happens, its usually the financial end.
(Lego is well known to bully independent toy stores with this method if they sell chinese knockoffs, no matter if its not direct copies of Lego sets. Its pretty much the same case here.. they claim you could use it together with their product and therefore it needs to be stopped, and many just give up because they cant afford to fight).

Pic related already has shoulder pads and helmets and some bolters with WS iconography. Further down the first page are some curved chainswords. No clue what else would be needed to make some White Scar Marines. But it took me less than 2 Minutes.
