To be on-topic, you have to find ways to engage your players. If their characters die, you either have to give them something to do, or let them clock out. Good players will generally want to see what's happening, but you also can't really blame people for not being focused when they have no means of participation.

Being that a DM is not an experienced social leader and has an already quite difficult job in running the game, it is common for them to over generalize
I don't think there was anything wrong with this specific instance of you getting out your phone, but it makes sense that a busy dm would be upset at you for breaking the rules when he left you alone

I was running a D&D 3.5e dungeon crawl recently, and my players decided to fight everything that came their way. Due to them not finishing making their characters before the game (even though I reminded them over a week in advance) they only fought some violet fungi (and some dungeon props/hazards which could be avoided by not touching them) in a zone that I thought was obviously a fungus farm and not the lair they were searching for (one player even made a knowledge check and I straight up said that violet fungi are usually used as traps or corpse disposals in underground farms), and the whole time I was prepared to have to drop the bomb of 2d4 str and con damage (all of them got hit at least once), luckily they all succeeded on saves against initial damage and then saved against secondary damage due to the use of antitoxin which the least unprepared player had chosen to buy before the game.

I can see both sides. For him he wants you to pay attention and once one person pulls out their phone everyone does. It's a bit passive aggressive. I had a combat where at the start for some reason the storyteller immediately had my character get shoved by some sort of telekinesis and get knocked out. No roll, just "oh you're out cold". I just pulled out my tablet and started playing a game. I had completely checked out of the campaign and it died after that session because I quit.

But I get it. Your character died and you had nothing to do. You weren't involved so got out your phone. Perhaps you thought he should have expected that.

Sounds to me like he thought he'd already addressed this situation by saying no phones. I would suggest either politely excusing yourself from the game or having a chat about why you think it's best to whip out your phone if you're not involved.

The correlation between trans folks and autism is well documented and needs more investigation but the increase of sadness and anxiety in our society is well documented. What's wrong with that? That's a good opportunity for content. Yet another fight now turns into a chase, the players have opportunities to be strategic in how they retreat, where to, in stalling the enemy following them. If it was a plot-significant encounter then now, even once they've escaped, the enemy is searching for them, so now they get to roleplay some stealth and trying to slip the tightening noose of enemies closing around them, and do clever things to throw the enemy off their trail. Or they get to use this to their advantage and set up an ambush for the enemy that's searching for them, allowing them to fight that same encounter but with the element of surprise and on ground they've chosen because it give them an advantage. Players running from an encounter is fantastic.
OFC the exception is if only one player flees when the rest don't want to, but most people are smart enough to recognize this is a social game about co-operating with a party of players, not an MMO, and that going off on your own constantly slows down the game for everyone and frustrates all the other players.

Afterwards the party was more prepared for the fight coming out and, ironically, they 1 turn "destroyed" the robot with a Polymorph Other that bypasses both its innate magical resistance and saving throw (wasn't a crit fail but I remember a penalty being applied from an item), point is that I have to calibrate every encounter to be "beatable" because players often are too stupid to run away.
I'm not saying I'm making encounter that can't be beaten and the only solution is to run like a bitch, what I am saying is that I can actively let the world be less "balanced" by me tossing whatever makes sense at a time with the knowledge that if it is too much the players will have an escape plan or attempt, rather than accept death just because whoops this enemy had one thing I didn't see that invalidates your current setup.

That's a symptom of the 5e mindset (although Polymorph Other and spell resistance are 3e, is this the first 3e game for some of your players? I'm >>96741449 and all my players had only played 5e before), but it's good that your players found a way to defeat the monster and you didn't retroactively give it a defense against what they did. I also don't design encounters to be unbeatable/beatable, I just add what would realistically be in the location (and I take into account what monsters would either kill any weaker monsters in the area or lose to them).
