We used to meme about "what's next, Big Bang Theory and The Office?" and it became true. The most far flung, hyperbolic shitposts became true. I hate it here but I cant stop watching. I don't even know what to do, do I start liquidating my collection? I got a few thousand in RL cards; a decade ago I'd have told you that MTG will last forever but now I don't know if it'll even be a hit in 2030.

I don't even hate the idea of special edition crossover crap... So long as
>1: it's purely premium reskins of existing cards
>2: it fits next to an existing standard printing of an MTG card

I don't give a fuck about Iron Maiden getting cards; they fit those criteria, a fucked up mummy zombie thing fits MTG well. But I'm gonna cringe whenever someone resolves a fucking Furby or TMNT card.

Ive been playing since pre-hasbro, there was a lot of doomerism when they bought the game but it never became true... Until now. WOTC was left relatively alone to do as they please until the past 5 years or so. The fuck ups were largely issues with game design and organization, not monetization. Until this era of SL/UB slop we were having it good.

I dont know anything about DnD or care about DnD.

I think there are 5 criteria to decide what can be made into a set:
1. Public Awareness
2. Rabid Fanbase
3. Richness and Depth (no small sets)
4. Theme (this really doesn't matter to Hasbro but it should).
5. Politics (for practical purposes this means no Harry Potter set).
With those you can decide what could be an interesting IP for UB or not.

I've never been a fan of UB, from day one I was bitching about how ill fitting TWD was to magic and it's only gotten worse from there. But I'm also willing to admit when things do work to some degree, like avatar. But yes they're extremely low on workable marketable IPs that aren't just fortnite-ified slop.
>I can think of Pokemon and Zelda
Zelda, sure, not sure about pokemon fitting but I guess it wouldn't be as bad as some of the other shit they've done lately. not that it'll ever happen; if something like star wars can't happen due to a card game releasing a year or two ago then you're absolutely never seeing a crossover with their #1 competition for the last 20 years (arguably 27, I feel like even when WOTC was in charge of its western distribution they saw it as an obstacle to magic more than anything else)
Anonymous No.96751485 >>96751510

No way Nintendo will give WOTC anything, especially after they parted ways with WOTC for mishandling the pokemon TCG way back when.

The only (fitting within MTG universe, can be a full set) likely UBs left unexplored I can think of are
>the elder scrolls
>elden ring/dark souls
>game of thrones (shudder)

As for things that I think will probably come even if they'd be cringe in MTG, purely because of popularity and willingness to do crossovers (has enough content to be a full set)

I don't mean "does this *feel* like Magic" which is a distinction I would only give to Forgotten Realms, *kinda* to FF and ATLA, and a hundred old fantasy properties that they wouldn't adapt even if they had the license (Black Company Secret Lair: never)
I mean literally just "can you print 250+ original card designs using this IP as your basis without resorting to bottom-of-the-barrel crap like Bagel and Schmear (Yiddish in mtg! wow!), preferably while also supporting ten draft archetypes." Spider-Man turned out to be a definite "No", whereas PokΓ©mon has about a thousand PokΓ©mon (non-legendary creatures in the UB set, a rarity), almost a thousand different moves which are basically spells with arbitrary effects, several hundred passive "abilities", dozens and dozens of varied natural environments to turn into lands, and a hundred or two usable items to turn into artifacts and whatnot. They have more than enough to work with

The WeeklyMTG stream did a recap of the TMNT panel and Blake did confirm the set's size was 190 main set cards. So slightly bigger than Spider-Man. And unlike Spider-Man it was designed from the start as being this size, apparently, and they're broadly playing around with set size going forward. So for example he said there'll be about 120 more cards released next year than this year, despite next year having one more set. I imagine Hobbit is also similarly small.

I know absolutely nothing about tarkir or edge from online discussion.. just imagine anyone who hasn't kept up with the game for a month talking about the actually released set but everyone is already 5 sets ahead in discussion and wotc with previews as well.

>Is the perfect mtgpiggy one who is hyped 24/7?
From what I can tell from Blogatog posts and stuff from WotC directly, it seems like the ideal consumer is someone who spends a ton of money on certain sets and little to no money on the sets/products they don't care about. In simple terms, they wait for a set theme or IP they care about a lot, consume spoilers, then consume the product, and then forget about Magic for however many months until the cycle repeats. I have no idea how that's better than making people excited for everything you put to market, but Mark and everyone else at Hasbro seems to believe it's the best way to keep Magic profitable.

For all I know, those types of people could make up the majority of the people that play Magic these days. I, for one, only came back into the game this year because I saw a few cards that I liked from particular sets and I didn't give a shit about anything from the UB sets they released. My sister only plays the game whenever her coworkers have commander night or whenever there's a prerelease (she almost never looks at spoilers). Maybe they're just hoping stringing along a bunch of different audiences with the hopes that each demographic will keep the money flowing when the sets they love the most finally come back around will be the most profitable path for them.

It's probably why they're also fine with thousands of cards being legal in standard at once; the idea is that everything is relatively the same powerlevel of slop in each set, which implies to them you won't have to balance as much as long as everything is basically the same. Based on what we've seen the past few years, they clearly can't pull that off, but they seem to believe they can with what little time they allocate to testing. Then again, their decision to make ban windows more frequent could be a sign that they're realizing they can't and it's a last-ditch effort at correcting obvious design mistakes as they come.

TES, the setting is piss easy to adapt and if anything has the FF problem of having well more than one full set's worth of relevant characters and events to the point where they could easily double up on it like they're doing with Tolkien, even if they give TESO the Korra treatment (they should)
The guilds basically stat themselves, you've got B Dark Brotherhood, WB Morag Tong, UB Telvanni and Thieves Guild, BR Mythic Dawn, R Fighters Guild, RG Companions, B College, WB Mages Guild, and so on
Fingers of the Mountain as an overcosted burn spell
Plenty of equipment that's easy to work with, both basic shit like Umbra and Goldbrand and gimmickier stuff like the Mask of the Gray Fox phasing something and making a token copy of it
Yagrum Bagarn, probably with blink support
Rakdos Cicero please god I want more clowns

So with regards to the whole "2026 will only have about 120 more cards than 2025", I think you can reasonably assume 3 of the sets next year will be smaller. TMNT is, we know that, I feel like we can probably assume Hobbit is, and... Between Super Heroes and Star Trek, Star Trek is probably smaller. Strixhaven likely won't be, and it'd be really stupid if the big finale set of Reality Fracture was. Super Heroes, meanwhile, has a LOT of ground to cover while Star Trek DOES have a lot to cover, but the problem is a lot of Star Trek's ground is very 'same-y' in a sense, so making it smaller makes sense.

It's still mostly high-speed combo flowchart decks, but it's very diverse (The most recent top8 had seven different decks in it) and several non-combo like Odion are Tier 1.

It takes the turbo-cancer combo faggotry that YGO has become and cuts out the cancer, while still leaving the game as giant kaiju boss monster summoning battles, and tones the game down enough for a few non-combo decks to compete and even be top tier.

The game's better than it ever was. Konami literally looked at the cancer that was killing YGO, straight up just said "No" and banned over 500 cards in one giant scythe swing to fix the game.

Magic's days are numbered. Konami has proven they are willing to do what it takes to fix their mistakes, and Hasbro has proven they are narcissistic losers who never admit fault, gaslight their players at every turn so they can continue to make mistakes, then double down on their mistakes while declaring they are successes.

Pre-Cybernetic Revolution you could still play "off-meta" and not just the goodstuff pile and still play the game.
Now if you're not playing specialsummonslop and handtrap omninegateslop, you shouldn't even bother.
Yugioh is like every deck is some variant of U control.

The game truly died with Strike of Neos, because they released Six Samurai.
Nugioh players have never played actual yugioh, just autopilot flowchart slop.

The new setting for Lorwyn is so weird. Like you'd think that if the world could randomly shift at times so you'd become a completely different creature with different memories it'd just destroy society. Everyone would become nomadic so as to avoid the night turning you into a mindless beast. Even if you yourself couldn't remember it you would come to your senses to a destroyed home and others would witness it and maybe register it somehow.

Feels like they're trying to have their cake and eat it too.

This is one of the most bizarre things to me about these obvious raceswaps. I'm not someone that's easily convinced to buy something just because it's from a property I care about, but if WotC put black Link or black Zelda (not Tetra) into a Zelda-themed set, I'd be way less likely to want to consume ANYTHING from that set, even as a casual Zelda fan, just because they clearly don't give a shit about pandering to nostalgia, which is what these UB sets really should be about. I've even heard people complaining about the turtles themselves saying "This isn't Leonardo," or "Raphael wouldn't wield jittes." It's especially weird because you didn't hear as much of that talk when they spoiled the Final Fantasy set, almost as if there were people at WotC or Squenix that really cared about how the characters were portrayed.

>>96757412 This. Only good thing about Yugioh is the comic. The first one. Maybe also the anime adaptation, but again only the first one. Everything after that is slop. (for pigs.) They now market themselves to westerners as "that meme anime card game for weebs," and thus most of the cards they've made after their show was cancelled fall into one of three categories:
> memberberries of stuff from the show
> blatant knockoffs of other anime and stuff that weebs are into, basically UB without a direct partnership
> generic anime shit that could easily be the latter and you just aren't getting the reference
Whatever identity this brand had was lost a long time ago. A lack of overtly gay people on the cards is essentially the only claim of superiority over MTG that they can make.

Blatantly wrong. Early Yugioh had a very distinct look. Even after artists other than Takahashi started illustrating the cards they did a pretty good job at keeping things cohesive. It evolved into a different look during the GX-5Ds era when they went more detailed and experimental with monster designs, but those cards still had a consistent shading style between each other, and didn't yet look entirely out of place next to the older cards. At some point they started making everything look like a sentai character or a retarded dragon mech with orbs, which was its own aesthetic I suppose, but even that variant of the "yugioh feel" has degraded over the years. Nothing they release today looks like a yugioh card. No, not even the memberberries.

Crossovers are not UB
UB is an advertisement that WotC has somehow conned themselves into paying for the privilege of having interrupt their game.
Crossovers are just two different things doing cool things together.
These are not the same thing. Basically nobody would have cared if MTG just did regular crossovers motivated by legitimate community love for both IPs. The problem with UB is that it is corporate-motivated, hollow money grubbing.

UB is a sales tactic, not an effort by people who love the game. That's what makes it shit.
