"I am evil, because I accepted the terms of society at face value. To exercise a liberty is to exercise authority. To be free, to have space, to possess anything, is to exclude others. To deny others, to deprive others. Tolerance is an imposition, an exercise of force, to force into proximity that which is loathsome without retaliation. And so, if it is the case that I may be imposed upon by the multitudes, and that this is justified by the collective will all I would require to impose upon others with the same moral legitimacy would be a multitude of my own.
It is far easier to produce a multitude than you would guess. Because the nature of liberty is self-reinforcing, each additional liberty added buttresses the whole--each additional thing the people are forced to tolerate diminishes their natural opposition to all others, and so additional vertices of pressure may be added endlessly. But there is a flaw in this system, which is that it presupposes that the human spirit is immobile, and can be crushed into stasis. But it cannot.
If you offer the people a way to trade a thousand oppressors for one, they will choose the one. If you compress water from many sides, but leave one space open, they will flood through that one remaining way. Even if the next chamber is pressurized itself--so long as it is LESS pressurized, the water will still flow there. The human spirit cannot gauge the moral quantity of pressure, it can be measured only in intensity. Only in quantity. It is an unconscious behavior.
I am evil, because I am Democracy Par Excellance. I am Tyranny minus one."
