Because AP, just like with everything else, uses the cheapest bottom of the barrel garbage. Try AK papers, it's good. Redgrass is also pretty awesome.

I don't use an airbrush but I mask up and ventilate a small room with two open windows and fans when I cut xps foam with my hot wire cutter. I do this even though the manufacturers say its perfectly fine to breath the fumes as long as you are in a vented room.
I don't trust manufacturers when they say things because I work in manufacturing. For instance I make things for food grade packaging and alot of the chemicals involved in the process are no where near food grade acceptable but since the residuals in the end product are below what is unacceptable for food grade it is considered "food grade" packaging. I imagine this is how all manufacturing rates their product safety and I imagine it's far worse when you are getting products manufactured from China or Taiwan.

there have been multiple generations of slavs working in foundries without masks but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. does putting a fan in the window and wearing a mask somehow make it harder to paint? can you not afford the $40 expense? or do you have some kind of ocd where wearing something on your face makes you sperg out? it amazes me that people who are too scared to even brush paint enamels because of "toxic chemicals" are also completely unwilling to take even effortless precautions when it comes to airbrushing.

With the food grade chemicals, some of them are dyes which are supposed to have no things like lead or mercury in them. I'm not privy to the quality control reports of the chemical company that makes the dyes but our water treatment part of our process does have mercury and lead residuals in it. Where it comes from, who knows, but mercury and lead were in dyes forever up until recently.
I wouldn't trust a manufacturer of non toxic paints to be non toxic.

Mask is enough, no point in keeping window open. I don't know how it works in your place of living, mine have temperatures outside below 10C for 2/3 of the year. I would go bankrupt for trying to keep temperature inside room warm with window open for entire painting time. But this whole discussion is pointless since it was solved long time ago - paint particles are small but not THAT small and heavy enough to stay in air only for a short time. Pro artists knows how to control their stream so whatever that fails to land on the model is landing on table or is low in amount to be neglectable. If you would spray with some absurd pressures like 3 bar and into cardboard box, you could see over spray bouncing back but you usually keep pressure below 2 bars anyway where it's not a issue. Don't believe me? Set up light source and see for yourself. P3 mask will handle anything that could bounce back, if you are that worried. What you could actually require ventilation are lacquers due to fumes but if you spray acrylics, it's completely fine.
Now, why is Reddit and by extention social media spreading the fear? Because they don't fucking understand what they are doing and parrot each other, trying to sound smart. Go ahead and ask one of them about thinning paints. In 90% cases they will start talking about "milk consistency" they heard about in one of videos/etc but will never, EVER be able to explain what it actually means and more importantly, WHY they do this. Or how many Gunpla builders would insist on applying gloss layer over paint, then apply panel lining and then matt/satin coat but would be unable to explain why, just "that's how it should be done" (it's really about how wash is next to impossible to clean from matt surface while piss easy to wipe from glossy, even surface).

The helmet is the most specific thing about it, but it's also almost too much in a sense. Like giving a Space Wolf Blackshield a Wolf helmet. Nobody else had that style. But as the same time the color scheme really did the heavy lifting for the thousand sons, so once it's all painted black the helmet alone might not even click with people, especially if hidden behind a gorget.
I was thinking maybe some of those shoulderpads with the rims the HH resin kits had would be another subtle clue. Not exactly subtle, but if you want more flavor you could give him a force-kopesh instead of a staff. That way people will probably know exactly what it is, even when he is wearing black.

NTA but I also use soap (not liquid, the solid one) to clean my brushes after use, from time to time also clean them with shampoo and they are just fine.
Need some technical support.
So, I’d heard here that Badger Stynlrez primer was pretty decent, so I picked some up when I needed more primer. I found it worked great on the mini, but it would rapidly clog up my airbrush. I tried thinning it with some Vallejo airbrush thinner I had sitting around, and this is the result I get: an incredibly smooth, glossy primer coat that ends up not taking paint well - too smooth!
Any advice on whether I should be thinning the primer with something else - water, rubbing alcohol, or? Or should I suck it up or try boosting the pressure on my air compressor and power through it?

If you wash hair too often it dries out and fucks up the ability to hold a point. Brush soap is a literal scam. Just use a little dish soap if you've drowned a brush in something and need to rescue it. Otherwise stick to water.

Eldfall Chronicles, Wayfarers pack. Indie skirmish game. I picked it up solely for painting since I wanted to try doing some fantasy minis for a change. My LGS seems to be really into it recently (understandable since they were very Infinity focused for quite some time, Eldfall is pretty much fantasy Infinity and unlike Warcrow, minis are all Unicool instead of Siocast which means good details instead of rubbery mess).

Oh you mean brush soap, not normal one. Yeah, I don't think it makes sense to use or buy one, I asked at art shop and they couldn't say what actually makes it different from normal soap and some art student girl giggled a bit after hearing the question and said she clean her brushes in literal dishwashing liquid and they are just fine. A little too much for my taste so I follow my mother approach - normal bar soap at the end of the day with proper rinse and occasionally woman's shampoo treatment.
I also have small bottle of Vallejo "brush cleaning solution" which is supposed to not damage natural hair but I'm not entirely convinced as it smells a bit like alcohol.

I recently had a weird color change happen with a coat of AP SpeedPaint 2.0 going from magenta/red to orange/brown after being hit with a dark red oil wash. No clue why that happened. It didn't come off the model like in your case, but it did react very strangely to the oil wash that's for sure

I've given Windsor & Newton like 5 chances and my 4th brush is already dulling. Have barely used the 5th one. I gave Rosemary and Co several tries across different brushes of theirs. I recently bought the Vallejo sables and they paint very nicely for the price, but unfortunately have begun dulling. I've got some ancient Monument Hobbies Bombwick Sables that have held a point longer and endured more abuse because I got them when I was still a beginner. So while they have a decent point it's not sharp enough for stuff like eyes and the bristles themselves are actually a bit curved despite being real sables. I've been wanting to try Da Vinci's or Raphaels but sourcing them in the US without paying out the ass for them is hard.

What a king, thanks. Yeah, I'm on iphone and currently use Halide or Camera+ sometimes. I feel like my issue is lighting itself or positioning of them or the model because I do have a chinesium lightbox with lights but I don't usually use it and often opt to just stretch a shirt over my desk and set up lamps or manually handle my old hobby lamp into position. I do prefer a black background since I feel the white can sometimes desaturate color, but in your case it clearly doesn't. I should give my lightbox more use, though. Any recommendations for a specific type of fabric? I have the plastic backdrops that came with the box but they came rolled up tight and never really could unfurl completely.

This is one method. The core of painting black in any case is to not actually use pure black anywhere except the darkest shadows. The majority of the model should actually be dark grey. But it will read as black unless you really fuck it up. Look at how black objects look in light for an idea of how black objects look IRL. A black ball, a black car, etc.

For black to look black there shouldn't be "darkest shadows", you need to crush the contrast so that at least 50% of the black is full black. If you're only using black in recesses then you're painting dark grey imo.
A satin finish helps deepen black and make it really pop. Quite a few black acrylic paints from the major brands dry matt so need a coat of varnish or a wash.

It can be an off black like Corvus black or something, but if half the model is your darkest black it's going to just look like ass. Black reflects light unless it's vantablack or something like that. Black cloth or armor isn't a black hole. You should still only be reserving true black for the darkest parts.

Because on one hand you want to be able to shade the model, and on the other hand it isn't like any actually perfectly black paint will ever exist (ie reflects no light at all), they're all just more or less dark grey all said and done. And of course if you want things to look worn and weathered, well, black ain't exactly going to get any darker as the pigments fade, paint is worn, and dirt accumulates.

The thing about the oil tube is that if you use it just for washes, it will probably last you a lifetime. Get a tube + white spirit, it is like thousand times better value and it will give you a lot more options than just the panel liner

how does it "shadow" when it's just sitting under your actual colors? if you use black primer and then use gray and white to preshade before painting your yellow or whatever that will show through as contrast, but if you're just painting yellow over all black it's not going to accomplish anything but making your yellow harder to lay down.

Everything, pretty much. The quality of casts, how much you need to clean up, and how retarded that cleanup is. How stuff fits together. The little things like that the Citadel still had not achieved the esoteric mysteries of casting tubes in one piece (like barrels) while everyone else did. That they are not even willing to work around that, like with metal parts that even cheap Takom kits have. Nonsensical numbering/location of the parts, or that you can see that they just don't give a fuck about your enjoyment while building the models. A lot of kits seem to be made with the idea of being as unpleasant to kitbash as humanly possible, too.
There's more of it, but I don't wanna ramble too much. Don't get me wrong, comparing Citadel stuff from ten years ago and Citadel today, it's a day and night difference in how much better it is. The difference when comparing them to these companies I mentioned above is about the same, though.

Cost cutting. That would require them to make the molds in more than 2 parts. It's the same with pauldrons with studs now sometimes coming in 2 halves to make the studs look better. Instead of making the mold 3 or more pieces to get that detail.
>kits seem to be made with the idea of being as unpleasant to kitbash as humanly possible
Exactly the idea, like anon said. They're moving to make it as difficult as possible to kitbash and making the rules so that, if it doesn't come in a box they sell, it's not a legal loadout for models. It's fucking vile and makes me not even want to play the games.

Sliced into the tip of my left middle finger, right below the fingernail, all the way down to the bone. Bled like a fucker. Left a trail all the way from my desk to the bathroom.
I've dealt with worse cuts and stabs, and I knew this one was in a shitty place that couldn't even be sutured let alone stitched, so I clamped it down until the bleeding stopped, then cleaned and wrapped that fucker properly.
Had it bandaged for like 3 weeks before it healed properly.

30k and Necromunda go with upgrade kits since they're probably the last vestiges of non-knights/tanks actually having options, but a lot of the guns are still designed around being used with two hands, and poses for things like power lances will need some modification if you just want to use them with one hand instead. Though oddly, Solar Auxilia infantry isn't monopose, and only a few kits are consistent about having slots for magnetising weapon options, like dreadnoughts in particular.

None, really. I've accidentally done some pretty deep jabs into my finger with a #11, but it's nothing to write home about.

yes. in better times it would be good advice to just go to the beach with a bucket and get some for free but a lot of people shit on the beaches these days so getting prewashed sand for only $7 is a no brainer. modern problems require modern solutions

Ok, should I get a second type of aquarium pebbles, or will just the one with the sand look good enough?

depends how much they screened that sand. if it's only super fine grain stuff and uniformly so, it won't look very good on bases. this is why beach sand mogs because you get different grain sizes and broken up bits of shell and stuff so its pretty convincing on the base but there's no guarantee it's clean nowadays
