Open licenses always lead to low-effort slop getting shoveled out en masse. What makes PbtA worse than D&D in this regard is that it's story-first nature really appeals to politics-obsessed theatre kids who think they can change the world with a hobby.

Are you saying it’s because of pbta or are you complaining that pbta products have turned to shit?

Shitty thread.

Sounds like a you problem, as far as games go, things are pretty great lately.

Good post. What makes PbtA games worse than the glut of 3.5 or even 5e OGL games is that when a PbtA game is done badly, it's unplayable garbage, while an OGL game will still be functional, as long as they didn't intentionally remove too many proverbial load-bearing mechanics. It's very easy to fuck up the PbtA engine, moreso than most. Arguably, it was never that good in the first place, and the few examples of it working well are exceptions that prove the rule, because despite it's brief explosion of popularity, only a handful of games are even worth trying.

PbtA has not really had any wider effect on the hobby one way or the other. Everything good and bad comes from D&D and D&D alone since it is the only RPG for majority of all people. People currently steering D&D always decide the broader course of entire hobby.

>proverbial load-bearing mechanics
Which dnd mechanics woul you say are the most load-bearing ones? Also, do you think any are missing?
I tend to think chase scenes are usuall lacking its own nice subsystem, but I don't play dnd.

There are actually three PbtA games worth playing, and all of them have so much more added to them beyond a setting skeleton and playbooks. Those games are the already mentions Monster of the Week and Masks, and the last one is Kult 2E.

Dungeon World can be pretty okay with a single exception... Ditch every default playbook and grab the "Class Warfare" book that someone else made that allows players to assemble their own playbooks from more broad and vague conceptual building blocks. It also double dips into DW's whole idea of just making shit up yourself, because now the players have to define what their character is, instead of Fighter, Wizard, Druid, etc.

>4th ed
Oh yeah, I've only recently broken the D&D brainwashing and still keep forgetting that games worth your time don't usually completely rebui9ld their engine from the ground up every numbered edition.
I was working under the idea that 1st through 3rd-ed was like the D&D3e -> 3.5e thing where they're basically the same edition if you're not caught up on the minutiae.
As for why it's worth playing, the writers actually took the time to bake the horror of the setting into the rules. It's not just a list of "here's how this is different from Dungeon world", and the game actually fucking takes the time to explain how you can go off book for your characters, and have the system's reward structure actually encourage it. So many goddamn PbtA games don't even have guidelines for game masters to follow when judging improvisation, let alone anything baked in. Also, barring a little bit of lip service to current year covering your ass in the disclaimer page, the setting info is just the best on the world take so far.

Agreed, actually. DW is a garbage system and it's quite confusing that it took off and started the whole PBTA trend, because it's a dogshit game written by retards. The 2nd edition they're working on is somehow looking worse than the original.

On top of that, the loose rules means you don't need any real design skill. You can follow the Apocalypse World framework and shit out a crappy PbtA game relatively quickly and easily. No need to worry about any math. You can write it purely on feeling.

Anonymous No.96784649
>>96784260
Bruv, as >>96784360 pointed out, PbtA's rules aren't loose at all. they're actually too strict. You need a deft writer going out of his way to include new material in the book for your character to be anything more than his playbook as a hotbar.
Hell, beyond its even smaller numbers, its tiered resolution mechanic is more complex than most other pass/fail systems out there.

MotW is pretty much the only PbtA game worth a shit. It's tone, premise, and flow actually compliment the ruleset because failing forward is expected in that kind of setting.
