Are cats the most difficult? I feel like they never win.

Riverfolk might be my fav of the expansions

who am I supposed to root for?
Anonymous No.96792523 [Report]
Root is one of those games that sounds interesting, but the moment you try teaching someone the rules, you realize it sucks.

Raising my hand and saying i bought it because it looks nice, but it is very complicated for my tiny brain. Made a few attempts, last game I am reasonably sure we were playing it properly. This is entirely because I am retarded which is my disclaimer. I bought the Marauder expansion because I hear it is the most wargamey but I'm not cracking that one open until I'm satisfied we are having fun with the base game. If an expansion looks interesting i'll let myself have one but I try to keep that to a minimum.

This comes after Undaunted where I was totally into the idea but could take or leave the game.

Then there is Arcs which had a flash in the pan resonse, haters sndis now cheap everywhere. No idea why this is, it looked cute. Knitted Twilight Imperium

Brother I've never played riverfolk but I've literally never seen the person doing so have a good time. Without fail when this game gets cracked out someone wants to play the neat otters and is completely miserable by turn three.

Wish they would do a reprint of the Marauders expansion soon. My collection isn't complete and that makes me mad.
Anonymous No.96793509 [Report]
This is a game that I think would benefit from playing a bunch of times to become proficient in for the game to really shine
But it's just a bit too heavy for half of my group
So we never play it

my friends love it, i fucking hate this shit
the factions are extremely unbalanced and yeah, they cats never work and generally i dont like the gameplay and especially the bloat
Anonymous No.96794698 [Report] >>96795126

>specially the bloat
Thought I was the only one. Despite getting all the hirelings, I never felt like taking them for the game night. Clockwork was a waste of money.

No, cats are literally easy mode
>No gimmick
>No bullshit
>Reliable, if slow point gain
All you need is knowing how and where to turtle.

This is meaningless anyway, it's a solved game. Tell me what factions are in it, and unless player of the winning faction within that set will do some monumentally stupid fuck-up, they are going to win

Nigga, this game is literally known from one thing: how bloated it is with expansions and how extremely poorly the bloat is handled internally.
Kudos for creators for making a game that you need to first invest large amount of money to realise you're being ripped off.

We're going to play this game for the first time soon, what's the faction I need to pick and how do I need to play to crush everyone and make the experience miserable for everyone?

Seconding the request for curiosity's sake rather than being nefarious.
I've only played it maybe a half dozen times but definitely had the sense that the game hinges less on strategy and more on game fluency. Like in my experience people who are learning are *hopelessly* fucked even more than in something like Dune so the opposite makes complete sense.

woodland alliance is obnoxious and unless the others know how to counter them it's kinda over for them.
the birds are the most straightforward stompy faction of the starting set

you are absolutely right about that. people who know the game in and out will stomp you an you will never have a chance and honestly you wont have fun either.
I dont have a problem with competitive adversarial board games but man fuck the stupid cute animal aesthetic and the game aint even good

I don't condone ruining people's experience on purpose, but for the sake of the argument, play Vagabond as the Tinker. New players will not realize that you need to regularly punch the Vagabond player so he doesn't run away with the game (doubly important for Tinker), so you can play in relative peace. Once you get your third hammer and a Favor of the Fox/Mice/Rabbit card you can repeatedly nuke every clearing of that suit every turn, turning them into no-go zones for everyone else (assuming you don't just win the game on the spot from the massive point influx). God forbid you manage to get multiple Favor cards.

Confirmed.
One of my kids always grabs the otters then spends the game struggling because the rest of us ignore the otters and don't buy anything from him.

Cats are literally bottom tier because they (and corvids too) have a gimped action economy and are not particularly strong.

If you want people to be miserable you can take the Moles and turtle basically out of the map so nobody can do anything to you; or play the Vagabond, get swords and beat everything around you
