Amonkhet was just based on Egypt but also America during the slavery period. Samut is based on Harriet Tubman and Moses since Harriet was also known as Moses.
This ties into the Exodus theme the block had. Samut being super fast is a reference to Harriet's speed as an underground railroad conductor.

Have dragonshields tanked in quality recently or something? I got these for a double sleeved deck and after maybe 15 games they're already creased, split, etc on both top corners. Thankfully this is a casual slop format deck so the cards being marked isn't a huge deal, but it's still frustrating.

I have a old tron and boros burn modern deck, both double sleeved in dragonshields, that are still totally fine. 5+ years on both. They're scuffed/scratched as you'd expect from years of use but no bent/split corners.

I think MTG was best when it was about Dominaria and maybe some other planes. When they started to do what I call theme park planes (notEgypt, notIndia, notAncientGreece) is when it went down hill, because Magic was already generic enough, this just sucked out more soul by not incorporating mythology and history into Dominaria and other more unique planes in a less obvious manner. UB shit is just the conclusion of it.
That's my subjective take only tho.

The theme park planes are annoying, but they could be done right as in the case of OG Ravnica and Lorwyn. Amonkhet et al are a result of laziness in writing and worldbuilding more than a failure of the basic premise.

I actually miss MtG Salvation - whenever a new set would come out, people would get together and make a "gauntlet" of new decks to test whatever shitbrew you personally came up with and they actually were always fairly close to what the metagame would eventually be (when the format is still new, anyway). I'm aware that some sites do "50 new decks with XYZ set!" but that isn't the same and they are not curated in nearly the same way.

Yes and no. Some planes were decent (although, they didn't personally capture me as much as Dominaria, Ice Age sets were my favorites, also the Dark and some others). But other planes were too generic and not well done. It's not that I don't like planes being inspired by mythology, I actually do, but they make them in a very generic way.

They were doing well just making commander decks for these smaller UBs. Then mini sets like aftermath and the direct-to-modern AssCreed were abject failures so they decided to make them full standard sets instead, and now Spider-Man was also a failure and TMNT will most likely be another failure. For 99% of crossover IP promotion, all you need is iconic characters. you wanna get your shit into Fortnite, Mortal Kombat, so on, all you need is a handful of beloved recognizable characters. But for an mtg set, you need way more than that: you need iconography, creatures and places and objects that fans will recognize and be excited about.
One of the reasons for all god-awful cards in Spiderman was that WOTC were worried about players opening packs and not seeing Spiderman, because spiderman doesn't have enough specific places or objects or concepts that hold the same iconic and beloved status as its ~6 most prominent characters. You have to make a bunch god-awful generic filler cards with peter parker randomly slapped onto them if you want to get something recognizable to the majority of fans into most packs.
What Final Fantasy had that Spiderman doesn't is the breadth and depth of non-named-character iconography to fill out all the needs of an mtg set with cards fans of the original property actually want to see. Nobody was worried about final fantasy fans opening packs and not seeing Cloud Strife, because they would see a moogle, or a black mage, or a summon, or a town, or a mother fucking Chocobo, and that would be exciting and cool for them.

That's an issue, and another issue is that the cards are getting increasingly phoned in. Any random legend from WHO outclasses all legends we've seen in Spiderman in terms of conveying the character.
Like, this design could have been on any random card from literally any set for the last 10 years... the one cool thing i always thought made Universes Beyond interesting was that it led to loads of weird cards being printed with very specific and strange mechanics meant to evoke something from the source material. But now we dont even get that the cards are literally boring slop even without being cynical brand tie-ins... literally what is even the point if you can't recognize the card as the character?

You faggots are alright so I have some good and bad news. My friend works at WoTC and good news is that they're gonna release a Fate standard set in 2027. Bad news is that it's gonna have FGO in it because you can't make one 300 card set out of one VN. Rumour is that the chase cards are all the sabers like birds in FF, different colours, blue, Nero, Alter etc etc you know.

Spiderman's setting is "New York." It doesn't have an expansive world to fill out a set with. There's a lot of Spiderman, he's been around for a while, but that's 60 years of depth, which doesn't translate to a Magic set, as opposed to breadth, which would. 60 years of complicated and dramatic stories told about Spiderman and his small core cast of supporting characters simply provide far, far less material of the type that's necessary to churn out interesting magic cards than the sprawling lore and proper noun factories that are FF, DW, WH40K, LTOR, etc. The very fact that the franchise tie-in is so centered around one single character, to the point where he personally has to be on like a dozen cards including dog-awful commons that i can't imagine any fan of his being excited about in order for the tie-in to be recognizable, is is an obvious sign that this wasn't ever a feasible product.

I only play gimmick decks, the exact opposite of good stuff piles that need to be updated every set
I have a bunch of shitty cards that individually can't do anything but if you put them together they are capable of winning games

In the context of a hypothetical set about anatomical features, basic features like that would have to be Creatures because this is a Creature-centric game.

Porcelain gallbladder, in particular, is when the gallbladder wall becomes fully calcified so that it has a stony layer around it, which fits more as an Equipment than an Aura because it's effectively armor around the gallbladder.

I would probably make viruses and infections into auras. Cancers would be tokens.
